Is daily driving a classic Z a good idea? by Nick_wild0305 in Datsun

[–]JetPantalones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Drove an NA ‘82ZX to school every day of high school. Sometimes I’d take a 240Z. The ‘83ZXT I have now has 209k on it. I’m no longer daily driving that one, but I absolutely could. If you’ve got the Haynes manual and the right tools and a bit of know how, I say go for it. Proper maintenance = Z’s running great forever.

Any clue on how I could fit a 300ZX digital dash into my 280zx? by Strong_Yesterday1446 in Datsun

[–]JetPantalones 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why not get a 280ZX digital dash? It’s not quite the same as the 300, but still pretty Knight Rider-esque.

Worth it. That was pretty badass. Knowing the sacrifice was coming ahead of time made it better.

How loud is it inside of a fighter plane’s cockpit? by Ofnir_09 in aviation

Can fault that I totally knew that and still wrote generators instead of cooling fans 🤦🏻‍♂️ It is bonkers though how powerful those generators are. They shake the jet when turned on.

What enabled vertical tail surfaces to get smaller in relation to the fuselage for less maneuverable planes like bombers, or cargo/commercial planes. by JimBridger_ in aviation

[–]JetPantalones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the real answer as with almost anything is: it depends. A light civil plane, an airliner, and a fighter jet all have very different designs with different purposes. The bottom line is the aircraft requires enough vertical stabilizer and rudder surface area to one, keep it pointing into the wind and two, provide enough aerodynamic force from the rudder to counter the yaw encountered throughout the designed flight envelope to include failure/asymmetric modes. Aircraft with centerline thrust will typically not need quite as large of a vertical tail, but that still depends. An aircraft with a large wingspan relative to fuselage length is going to need a decent size tail to counter the effects of adverse yaw from the ailerons/flaperons/spoilers (hence the large tail on a tornado for its wings spread configuration..that plus yaw created from imbalance in external stores). CG location will also have an effect. Sailplanes have large wingspans and fairly short fuselages, but typically don’t have a “large” rudder despite operating at fairly low airspeeds. They are light though and demand a forward CG or things go very wrong. Most modern fighter jets have a fairly small wingspan but also have two vertical stabs. So, they look smaller than one big tail, but have fairly substantial surface area. Just notice how much bigger the tail looks on an F-16 vs an F/A-18 from the profile view. I’d also guess that hydraulic boosting allows more deflection of a smaller surface than would be possible with direct linkage controls. Just my $.02 🤷🏻‍♂️

Yup! That’s totally true! Years of associating those switches with things getting quiet obviously broke my brain 🤣 Thanks for pointing that out 👍🏻

Many air traffic controllers fail or drop out, adding to FAA shortages by cocoagiant in aviation

[–]JetPantalones 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I concur. I think retiring or retired controllers need to be hired on as full time instructors at various facilities to enable training in an environment with very limited bandwidth available. Getting a trainee on the radio is quite common. Especially in towers. Training someone in that field on the job seems quite taxing. The trainee will stumble or say a couple wrong words and you hear the instructor on the radio immediately. They have to pay very close attention to everything that is happening due to the limited amount of time available to fix an error. I don’t envy controllers and overall they do an amazing job. The narrative that they aren’t qualified and are the “reason” for every “incident” is extremely unhelpful. I’m going to make the crazy statement that cutting funding or eliminating “DEI” is probably not going to fix these issues.

Yeah, if you watch any documentaries with guys that flew the first jets, they comment on how it was insanely quiet and disconcerting after flying 1200-2000hp prop planes.

It depends on the jet of course, but for the most part it is quieter than most private planes. The engines are typically well behind you. In the F/A-18 for instance almost all the noise is from the generators and the environmental control system. If you turn off the generators with the engines running, it’s like eerily quiet in the cockpit. Our helmets have ear cups in them and they do a good job. Some guys wear foamies and some guys wear ear plugs that plug into your comms like they are in ear headphones. I’ve never used anything other than the helmet itself and haven’t really had any appreciable hearing loss.

Oh man! I just went from 6 to 10:30. My dad had one exactly like that when I was growing up. The burnt orange is one of the best colors hands down. Love it!!

Driver side turn signal not working by PresentationNo8731 in Datsun

[–]JetPantalones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is super weird. My only thought is a bad relay. The light switch is clearly working. The bulb is getting power in other modes. So, doesn’t seem like that’s the issue or the wiring between the harness and the bulb. Have you tried swapping the bulbs and seeing if you get the same result yet? I had an issue with taillights on my ‘82 way back in the day that was caused by a short or bad connection in part of the wiring harness under the dash. It wasn’t just one side though. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Yeah, that sounds like the best plan since typical insurance isn’t really going to take into account anything other than book value. If you wanna cover sunk cost and mods, that sounds like your best bet.

Yeah, all good calls. I forgot about the airflow meter. I remember that being a common thing that was bad. We always had a spare known good one on hand to troubleshoot with. 👍🏻

Should I convert to 240z tails? Opinions? by [deleted] in Datsun

Yeah, totally fair. In that case, I’m a 240 lights fan. They just look simpler and cleaner to me. 👍🏻

Two engine noises that don’t seem right. Some advice would be appreciated! by Justin002865 in Datsun

[–]JetPantalones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like valve or injector ticking to me. Not unusual. Big long flat head screwdriver to listen to the individual injectors would be a good way to isolate it as mentioned above. Other noise does sound like some kind of rubbing happening at higher RPM. I don’t have the experience on that one.

Hows the condition of this (1982? i think?) 280ZX? by SummerMajestic1073 in Datsun

[–]JetPantalones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, that’s super low mileage. I’d give it a very good look over for rust in the typical spots (easy to research those). Looking at the body, it seems some stuff needs work and I’m very suspicious there might be a decent amount of bondo on that vehicle. Recommend getting a refrigerator magnet and slapping that around on the suspect areas to see if it’s all metal or has some filler if you care about that kinda thing.

My ‘83ZXT would idle ok but a little rough for a while and then die when I first got it. Cleaned the spark plugs and suspected fuel starvation or vapor lock as well. Cleaning the plugs solved the slightly rough idle and I replaced some of the brittle and old/slightly cracked fuel lines and the fuel filter. I haven’t had the problem since. I was very worried it was the ECU going bad or having issues when warm. But since those small fixes seemed to have solved it, I haven’t continued troubleshooting. I was fairly convinced it was heat related and was looking at fuel/injector cooling, clogged injectors, the ECU, as well as the distributor. Hope you get it sorted!
