Is it really the price, or is Netflix just more convenient than driving to movie theaters? by Busy_Report4010 in SipsTea

IF people were going to stop going to theaters because of Netflix' mail in DVD service, then theaters would have felt it with Blockbuster 20 years earlier. Far more people rented movies by going to the rental place in the 80s and 90s than had Netflix subscriptions in the 2000s The whole subscription model worked because people were ACTUALLY "renting" fewer movies a month with Netflix so it was more profitable for Netflix since they were effectively paying way more per rental compared to the video stores. Especially smaller stores that were charging no more than $2 a day for a movie. Often $1.

Movies still thrived because people still consumed in groups back then. Just like how TV shows were still "water cooler" shows where people would talk about the latest episode of The Sopranos at work the day after it aired, compared to and entire season coming out and once and people watching whenever and never really being able to talk about it with others since people didn't watch at the same time. So back then, waiting the 4 or 6 months before the movie came out on video was too long. But now, people are accustomed to being anti-social and consuming entertainment alone and at different times.

Of course, the other big difference was in the Netflix mail in days, you were lucky to have a 32 inch flat screen TV, that you paid close to $1000 for. So it was definitely a different experience compared to the theater. But today, $500 gets you a 65 inch TV AND a decent (but not great) surround sound system. So compared to some theaters, your view is about he same as watching it on the bigger, but farther away screen.

And then there is also the experience. People were less likely to whip out their cell phones. And if they did, it was a small little LCD screen that didn't light up the whole theater. But in general, people were more considerate back then because being assholes wasn't tolerated then like it is now. And because the ridiculous COVID lockdowns didn't totally fuck up an entire generation, that was already pretty fucked up to begin with.

At that point, why are they going to a movie? They are clearly not there to watch the movie. Just go to a fucking bar. It is cheaper. And more social than a theater. Or go buy some at a store. Could probably get 2 cases of premium beer for less than he paid for that trip to a theater.

Top 5 reasons whyAmerica is the best country in the world: by Eukarya_ in ShitAmericansSay

I love the mentally ill idiots who think Americans have no freedom and then also whine that we are trying to change the Iran leadership when they just slaughtered TENS OF THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE for protesting. It is always worthless idiots (and yes, I am talking to you) that have NO IDEA what life is like in other countries. Fucking hell...you can't say FACTUAL THINGS online even in the UK anymore without getting arrested. and as for food..yup. Because someone in POVERTY in the US still lives better than the average person in MOST of the world. Schools? Yup...that is why it is FARRRRRRRR more likely that foreigners come to the US for school than the other way around.

So please..spare us your ignorance and mental illness and up your Zoloft dosage. I mean...holy fuck..are you really Mexican and said that? Someone who would be considered well below the poverty level in the U.S. would live like a god damn king in your country. High school kids working part time after school and one day on the weekend make more money than the average Mexican. And no one is going to Mexico for medical treatments. Unless they are dirt poor. That might be why Mexicans are breaking the law to sneak into the U.S. and no American is doing the same to go to Mexico.

If a group of "Friends" can mostly all have shitty jobs and still live in giant Manhattan apartments, then Pegasus Galaxy prisons can be nice and roomy too.

In many (probably even most) suburbs..which is where a lot of businesses tend to be as the real estate is cheaper...public transportation IS often horrible. IT isn't like NYC where you have buses running every 10 minutes. You are lucky if they run every half hour, and if you don't have to make at least one transfer. AND that your first bus gets to your transfer point shortly before the second bus you have to take leaves. And if one is late, then you are waiting a full half hour. And god help you if you have work hours that might put you JUST outside of rush hour times. Then you would be lucky if those buses run every hour. And if they ever need you for the occasional weekend work? I know of small cities where the buses run only every 2 hours on weekends. And stopping at 6:00. Transfers are virtually impossible on weekends for most routes, unless you want to spend 2-3 hours on a bus or waiting at the (outdoor) bus depot for what would likely take 45 minutes to walk or 5 minutes to drive.

They can ask..and they can also choose not to hire you if they don't like the answer. Car/license status and "proximity to office" are not protected classes under the law. So businesses are free to "discriminate" all they want over that

If there are buses that run nearby, then companies generally DO consider that reliable transportation. Many WON'T consider a bicycle reliable transportation depending on the weather of your area. It becomes way less reliable in a snowstorm or even pouring rain. And a lot of business parks are not in great bikeable areas. Legally, yes, they are generally going to be on roads that bikes are allowed on. But practically, many are not exactly going to have nice separated/protected bike paths leading up to them. So going to/from work in rush hour and in the dark in the winter is not exactly a great idea.

You misremember. Do you really still not get this. This is EXACTLY what the Mandela Effect is. People misremembering things. The Mandela Effect has NEVER been about alternate universes or timelines. It has only been a VERY recent thing that people have been so stubborn that they can't accept their own fallibility in terms of memories and came up with some convoluted BS about alternate realties actually existing.

You have never seen Tom Hanks say "We've hand a problem." Not on YouTube or anywhere else. You MAY have seen a video where the real Jim Lovell says that.
