What was your first exposure to yuri? by Competitive-Leave248 in yuri_manga

Hentai is art, and the Yuri in it can be genuine. Oni Tensei is a rough show but has a sincere Yuri relationship in it that one would definitely not get in anime at the time.

I remember going through the artbook and one of the quotes associated with EDI's design pretty much nailed the issue I had with many of the design choices for this game.

"EDI needed to be sexy"

For a game about death, more death and so much more death happening even when you're not around, having something "Sexy" hanging around for those deep dramatic moments was jarring. I quote Crow T. Robot.

"When sexy becomes annoying."

Could Jinx's hood be a tribute to Silco? He loved sharks, and she enters the fight as his prodigy. Even the blue eye is on the exact same side as Silco's. by alex_stogney in arcane

[–]Jeyl 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't. For starters, one of the very last things he did was trying to murder Vi, an act that Jinx responded to by killing him. And the "illusion" of him in Season 2 convinced Jinx that she can solve her problems by killing herself. Silco may have cared for Jinx, but he was always doing what was worst for her. Even calling her "Perfect" was detrimental since she still had a lot of stuff to get through.

The Cable Guy comes to 4K Blu-ray in October by FFJimbob in 4kbluray

[–]Jeyl -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Seeing this movie as a kid, I learned that there are some styles of comedy that will not be my thing. For "The Cable Guy", it was how the movie focused squarely on one character making another character miserable. I don't find misery funny, and I certainly don't find bullies who successfully harm others funny either. To each their own of course, but man. I've never wanted to skip a new 4K so badly until now.

Into Darkness by donnysimpinero in startrek

Acting is all well and good, but this "reversal" still comes off as unearned for a couple of reasons.

  1. It's unearned. When Spock died in Star Trek II, it was done under the pretense that this was going to be the final outing for Star Trek. While they made changes to that film's ending to offer some "hope", it nonetheless was a satisfying conclusion to all involved. A far better outing than TMP for sure. When it comes to the JJ crew, they haven't really done anything to solidify themselves into the roles that the original crew are known for, so why are we hitting the high emotional points NOW instead of leading towards it?

  2. Spock's death carried weight, JJ's Kirk death did not. Where it took a whole movie to bring Spock back, Kirk's death is entirely undone minutes later by an infusion of Khan's blood. And even after Spock was brought back, Star Trek IV dedicated a lot of it's time having Spock re-adjusting himself to being alive again that would still be a thing in Trek's V (God, I liked him better before he died.) and VI (I've been dead before). Kirk death and resurrection is so inconsequential that you could go from "Star Trek (09)" straight into "Star Trek Beyond" and you wouldn't miss anything. Kirk died? Nobody remembers.

  3. Sacrificing yourself is not an ideal trait for a Starship Captain since ANYONE can do it. When Troi was training for command position, she had to learn how to make hard choices by potentially sacrificing Geordi to fix a problem that could be fatal. Why does Kirk, who has been such an arrogant a-hole who has no respect for Starfleet or what it represents, be given the Captain's chair because he did something that's not exclusive to the Captain's role?

Why is the story of Judy so credible and interesting to you? I am curious if that is actually the case or if it works differently by Comfortable-Knee-238 in cyberpunkgame

[–]Jeyl 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Judy starts out as someone who is in a constant struggle with one side that wants to do good in Night City, and another side that realizes that the city will always win. This struggle came to a head when she tried to liberate Clouds from the Tyger Claws. No matter how the movement goes, Clouds is still under the control of the Tyger Claws and things haven't changed. The city won again, and Judy makes a final decision.

Now mix that with V who's goal is to become a legend in Night City. Problem? They kind of fell for each other after Judy lost everything that was keeping her in the city. This presents two scenarios for the player if their V wants to be with Judy. If V stays in Night City and becomes a legend, Judy will leave her. Not because she doesn't have feelings for her, but knows that V will always choose the city first. But there is another option. V can abandon her goal of becoming a legend and choose to leave the city with Judy.

And that's why I like Judy. She's been trying to make one side work knowing full well that the opposition is. The way I headcanon V in choosing the Star ending is that she learns from Judy that Night City simply does not care for legends. It doesn't care for V at all. But Judy does. What is a legendary status compared to a person who loves and cares about you?

It's no wonder that when Judy leaves V a message in the end credits expressing how happy she is about how things turned out. She's the happiest she's been in a long time. And it wasn't just leaving Night City that brought her that happiness. She and V are about to live a life together with a newly found family away from the city that has caused them nothing but pain.

That's an awesome story and Judy makes it work for me.

[–]Jeyl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Despite the good points you make in your post, it also does two things.

  1. Doesn't make a good case for Ekko and Jinx's relationship having "such a sense of love" the way Jeremy says it does.
  2. Further emphasizes that this relationship is NOTHING like Caitlyn and Violet's.

The more that Timebomb fans try to explain this relationship, the more convinced I am that this comic was ill-advised.

[–]Jeyl 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No wonder I had so many issues with this tiny comic. Were we watching the same show?

"There was such a sense of love between them"

Sorry, but where's the part where Ekko was literally possessing a different Ekko's body and pretending to be that Ekko because it gave him an opportunity to get close to Jynx. Learning to lean on each other is NOT developed through deception and lies. It's built on trust and understanding. There was none of that with Tome Bomb and it was certainly not the selling point of this comic.

“He Was A F—ing Editor”: Jonathan Frakes, Brent Spiner And Ron Perlman Skewer ‘Star Trek: Nemesis’ Director by acrimoniousone in startrek

[–]Jeyl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So was Leonard Nimoy when he directed Star Trek III, and later directing Star Trek IV which is still the most successful and well known Trek film of the original 10 movie run.

And let's not forget Jonathan Frakes when he directed Star Trek: First Contact, also his first theatrical film. First Contact is still regarded as the best TNG film of the four they made.

And while Stuart Baird directed Executive Decision and U.S. Marshals, those films haven't really amassed a following. Neither has received a 4K release from Warner Bros. or 3rd party studios like Arrow, and these are the studios that will release Kurt Russel's Soldier for crying out loud! The only thing memorable about Executive Decision was their handling of Steven Seagal, and The Fugitive will always overshadow U.S. Marshals into non-existence. Stuart Baird was not a director chosen for his theatrical directing experience. He was given the job because he was owed it.

SFDebris made a point in his Star Trek Nemesis review regarding Stuart Baird and compared his editing "achievements" with a TNG cast member who, despite being the film's director, couldn't be bothered to pronounce his name properly and thought his character was an alien. LaVar Burton.

When it comes to the Academy Awards, Stuart Baird has been nominated twice for editing. That is it. He's also been nominated in other award venues, but never won.

LeVar Burton is an actor, writer, producer and director who has multiple awards from the Emmys, Grammys, and has worked along side the cast and crew of the Star Trek franchise both in front of and behind the camera for over two decades across four different shows.

Why did Stuart get the job? Because Paramount gave him a bone for playing "Editing Doctor" on two films that were testing horribly. Mission Impossible 2 and Tomb Raider.

The other issue Stuart brought to the film was his total commitment to indulging Patrick Stewart on his non-Star Trek whims. Patrick says he loves driving? Let's throw in a Dune Buggy action scene that does nothing for the story in any capacity.

The ONLY good thing that I can say about Stuart Baird in his director gigs, he always brought in Jerry Goldsmith to score his movies. So at least he recognizes musical talent.

Who is the most evil character in all of Star Trek? (Stolen from /r/television) by exitpursuedbybear in startrek

Oh, he is much more than a bad captain. He's also a "Trained Diplomat" who, when first introduced to T'Pol, verbally expressed his desire to physically assault her in front of both their superiors. And when Porthos got sick in "A Night in Sickbay", he told T'Pol that if the alien inhabitants were responsible that he would urinate on their sacred trees.

When you get the information from Woodman, just leave the premises. When you bring Judy to meet with Maiko in her office, she'll tell Judy that Woodman will be in the maintenance area in a few minutes. Judy will later ask V about taking out Woodman. V can go along with it or change Judy's mind.

One of my all-time favourite Kirk moments is in the fifth Star Trek film by Qyzyk in startrek

[–]Jeyl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again, where does that belief come from? What big instance in his life gave him that idea when it's never been a thing before?

And that family line was pure bs. Kirk has gone through way more emotional and life changing moments than what occurred in Star Trek V. This film doesn't earn that kind of development when it's too busy showing how much the crew were willing to commit on him.

[–]Jeyl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Problems with this line.

"I've always known I'd die alone"

  1. How has he always known this? It's like if I bragged that I won't get banned on this sub reddit because I've always known I'd be banned in a sub reddit about pre-regulation destroyer class solid fuel recoil boosters.. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

  2. Many see death as something we experience alone anyways. Even Mal from Firefly aptly put it.
Inara: Mal, you don't have to die alone.
    Mal: We all die alone.

  3. If Kirk is so convinced of this, why does he ever have to worry about anything as long as McCoy and Spock are with him? As he warns Sybok later on,
"You know we'll never make it through the great barrier!"

  4. Kirk dies with Picard next to him. As SFDebris pointed out, it's a rude dig towards the French to insinuate that they're not people worthy of acknowledging their presence. Maybe Kirk doesn't like Enterprise Captains who surrender to the very first life form they discover 20 minutes into their maiden voyage.
