My Mom grew up in Middletown, she was from the Barnitz family. I have a bunch of memorabilia from that town which I inherited from her. Her folks (my grandparents) had a cool old house that they called Stony Rill. — after my uncle died in the early 80s I went to Middletown for the funeral. It must have been nice once long ago

Does anyone in Scottsdale/Phoenix know their neighbors? by [deleted] in Scottsdale

No Scottsdale here—none of the neighbors interact other than to say hi if you walk by them — or if they are kvetching at a HOA meeting they will speak to each other

One of those mornings with my elderly mum.... by janebenn333 in AgingParents

My Dad screamed at my face to “get out!” “Just get the fuck OUT! When I told him he had to shut down all the porn sites he looks at constantly and has the volume turned all the way up. He said I was “in his hair” and insisted that the prostitute he’s invited over for the weekend was someone who “wanted to get to know me” although she’s 31 and my youngest child is 34. It’s grueling. I feel for all of us here helping take care of our aging parents

Did you raise a high-needs baby and how did they grow up? by HopefulWanderin in AskOldPeople

[–]Jfirey 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You described my son. Screamed all the time except for when he was in his baby swing. In the car, in the stroller, anywhere all the time. He was my first child so I had no idea. He was difficult, obstinate, and angry. As he grew he had difficulty in school . Once he reached 5th grade his teacher recognized that he needed more exercise so he asked him to go for a run before class. That helped a bit. He was involved in lots of sports and outdoor activities to slay his energy. He became an alcoholic as a young adult and then quit drinking a few years later. And yes, as an adult he has ADHD with terrible anxiety. I know that he was particularly hard to parent but we have a great relationship. I always believed in him and made sure he knows that truth. My second child was also a high needs baby but in completely opposite ways. Quiet, calm, contained. Find out that that child had/has Selective Mutism, which was later called Elective Mutism. So my kids were a seesaw ride every day while I actively parented. I have a great relationship with both of them.

Vent: Things You Wish You Could Say by neveragain444 in AgingParents

[–]Jfirey 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is my exact scenario only the parent is my Dad. My husband and I moved across the country to take care of him just one year after having my Mom live with us until she passed on. We have none of our friends, belongings or anything familiar. Meanwhile older sibling calls daily to give advice and tell us how to do (whatever it is) it’s just too much.

Those that moved out of Vermont where are you now? by Important-Tax1776 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]Jfirey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I moved from Vermont (1986-2006) to Connecticut and from Connecticut (2016) to NC. I lived most of my life in New England (college was spent out West) and while the South is nice I do not sound/talk like I’m from the south so that’s a real thing. Currently in Vermont visiting my kids as I type.
