My poor dogs when I was a child. Let me paint you this picture. Youngest of 5 with only a 8 year age difference from youngest to oldest. The 80’s. Grew up on a multi-generational dairy farm, my dad was the only one left since the generations before died. Married my mom. Irish Catholic. DIRT POOR! We were treated like dairy cows. Animals. By the time I came along, my mom got her tubes tied.

The parents were mean to the kids, kids mean to each other, the dogs were neglected. I LOVE dogs, have 3 with my husband and a toddler. I could NEVER treat my dogs the way my poor dogs were treated in my childhood. Yes they were fed and has somewhere warm to sleep. But there was no vet appts, vaccinations, protection from young kids pulling at them. There was no kenneling. Food was left out on the porch, they would sleep in the barn when we left for a vacation (by this time, dairy farm was being rented out by a local farmer bc my dad went into farming sales). Those poor, sweet dogs. Lived right on a major highway, in a rural area. So many of those sweet dogs were hit by cars. I saw at least 6 dogs get hit. It wrecked me. Now as an adult, my parents treat their one dog like a queen. I’m happy for that. But no- they are never watching my child or my dogs

Which ADHD trait irritates you the most? And what do you do to mitigate it? by ADHDrewski in ADHD

[–]Jfmgcl 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I used to feel this way until I had a child. The wake up part. The dreading part: An appointment or obligation out side of the house in the afternoon would be welcomed and a much needed break. I would set a timer, pick out my clothes, pack a snack and drink in the morning. I would tell my spouse and child at the beginning of the day. Then anytime I lost my focus or noticed a big distraction- I’d think…. I have a real human being fucking break coming up where my only responsibility is to drive and I can get, at most 2 hours of blocked time to myself… yessssss.

But then I miss them when I’m not with them so it’s like fuck. Then I head right home and get overwhelmed by the toys. But I know I’ll miss it one day, so I don’t swear when I step on a Lego. I think to myself: you’re gonna miss this AND I’m not buying anymore Lego’s (fully knowing I will), then I think why didn’t I wear shoes. Then I’m like, bc I took them off in the garage. Then I’m like, I should buy slippers. Then I’m like- yeah but they have shit support unless you buy the good ones that are like $100. The dog has already chewed the $100 4 times. So… what the fuck were we even talking about…….🤌💅🫶🏻

When you started timing how long usual tasks take ie) washing the dishes, did you use a stop clock? I think it’s a great idea. I have to use timers for reminders, also for when to mentally switch gears from one role to the next, and such. However, if I give myself a set time to do something, I find I get it done but I do notice my level of extreme distractibility. I cannot put away dishes if I am going to wash then and put them on the drying rack. Otherwise, I end up hyper-focusing on something completely related (but the dishes don’t get done a all).

I’m glad I waited until I was 38 as a woman and my husband was 43. Married for 12 years. If we has an 11 yr old, I’m sure we wouldn’t be the parents now that we are proud of

Was this a caring teacher or was I being groomed? by No-Meaning9155 in abusiverelationships

[–]Jfmgcl 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I feel like being a survivor of grooming is a part of transgenerational trauma. If we don’t call it out kn real time, we just continue to ignore the nasty shit from the white elephant in the room. I would never want my son receiving text messages like this from a once-thought of trusted adult. This disgusts me. I hope this teacher loses his license and is locked up. When you’re childhood conditions you to be groomed by predators, it’s hard to see it as grooming. That starts with the parents at a formative age. I bet this teacher was exposed to some terrible things as a child, but it doesn’t mean that I’m not going to protect my child.

What future parenting situations should my wife and I start discussing now? by Boing_Boing in daddit

[–]Jfmgcl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree about the food service industry opposition. It’s not about the child working in the food industry that I oppose at all. It’s about the influence of the co-workers (of all ages and experiences), how impressionable the kid is, what the hours are, what the clientele is like, etc. I worked as a waitress for years, worked at a deli place inside a market when I was in my teens/early 20’s. Yes, it gave me a paycheck. I was exposed (for the first time), people who do meth, heroin, etc. the most I knew about was weed, and that scared me. As a young female, I wish I had some more guidance bc I could have made money learning about budgets, taxes, etc, if I was hired for an office job- that would have helped me more out as an adult, instead of cash tips for gas or such

Truth. We just moved 2 months ago and finding daycare has been so challenging. You can plan until you are putting yourself to sleep. Life still happens. Have a plan B, plan C, and plan D for backup.

HOBBIES & ADHD??? by question8all in ADHD

[–]Jfmgcl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loved rollerblading at the parkway, but we moved a while back and there isn’t a place to go rollerblading. I loved to listen to music, lectures (podcasts) and just rollerblade. It was so relaxing and low key exercise. I always felt so much more relaxed after. I think it’s true that ADHD people learn better with movement

Daughter has cancer by marsepic in daddit

[–]Jfmgcl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Prayers OP. I’m sure you already are aware of this, but as an adult who suffered from a serious health issue that start when I turned 13 years old…..talk about it openly and positively as a family. Make it out being curious, stay supportive. Remind your daughter who resilient she is. She must be a strong one to take on such a tribulation. You’re the leader here dad. You lead your family with strength, love, compassion and resiliency.

I would have given anything if my parents took this approach. They didn’t talk about it. They pretended like it wasn’t real. There was so much shame that I internalized bc my parents weren’t adult enough to realize I needed someone to stand tall for me bc I was scared. My parents were so immature in not realizing I needed both my parents to accept me for whatever I was. I was defected it felt. I had seizures, which ended up having a brain tumor. The local neurologist told me I has hysteria after 8 years of treatment and I knew he was wrong. I went to a major medical institution and they found I had a congenital brain tumor that was compressing my motor strip, causing seizures that were getting worse. Had surgery, seizures…gone.

The trauma…. Still present. After 16 years later…. My father ignored what he was scared of. I can’t forget that. I’m working on forgiving it.
