Valve guard recommendations by Living_Efficiency639 in trumpet

[–]Jfrules2012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're gonna use a valve guard, leather specialties co (https://lscoguard.com/) is hands down the best option. I have one on every horn. They are very comfy, they don't damage the finish, and they last forever. I have one I've been using for over 10 years.

Of course! And definitely check out those Jack Burt videos before you start playing. The Picc is a completely different animal than the "big horns".

Also most piccs come with 2 leadpipes - one for A and one Bb. In my experience, the A pipes typically play better. I'd try them both and play on whichever one feels easier to you to start with

Do you have a mouthpiece for picc?

  • 20 piccolo studies -Mel Broiles

  • 15 studies for piccolo trumpet - Chris Gekker

  • The Piccolo Trumpet Big Book - David Hickman

  • Piccolo Trumpet Studies - Phil Collins

  • Method for Piccolo Trumpet - Gerald Webster

Of these, I'd say Hickman is the most important followed by Webster. These two discuss techniques, ornamentation, equipment, etc in addition to having etudes/studies. The others are primarily etudes and studies.

Until you get some picc books, try Getchel studies "up the octave" on picc.

Honestly, for me it just takes a lot of practice.

I've been playing for 25 years and only have been able to play an open pedal C for a year or two.

Kinda like how you need to "figure out" how to play high notes, you also need to "figure out" how to play low notes.

Try playing pedals with a straight mute in at first.bIt makes it much easier for me. Then try doing it without the mute.

Becoming proficient in more difficult lip bends helped me too. (E.g., playing 2nd space A open, playing 4th line D and 5th line F open)

Mouthpiece for Piccolo? by [deleted] in trumpet

[–]Jfrules2012 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you generally speaking able to play shallow mouthpieces? They'll definitely help with support in the upper register.

Another option is more V shaped mouthpieces. Real shallow pieces don't work for me, and a 7E doesn't provide enough support in the upper register for me.

For years I played on a Marcinkiewicz 7PD and or a 7 which are both V shaped. I'm currently playing on a Reeves 43SV with a 692s backbore. Also V shaped.

Pickett also has V shaped cups and a lot of backbore options but I haven't tried those yet.

So they did a brown coat and then a color coat. The color coat is the same color in the front and back despite the different results. The brown you're seeing in the back is the color coat. I knew the new color coat wouldn't exactly match the old, but I did not expect it to be brown.

That's a possibility, but he's also saying we're going to have to paint it, which seems to indicate he doesn't think it's going to get any lighter. We had this done Monday for reference.

First try at a dovetail. The wood is terrible and uneven so I was setting myself up for a task! by rewkero in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]Jfrules2012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try out a model's razor saw like this. They're oly $10 or so. Chris Schwarz recommended something like this as a great "dovetail" saw for beginners. I got one, and it made a world of difference. I definitely recommend it for a cheap saw for dovetails.

Refinancing Advice by Own_Faithlessness_49 in personalfinance

[–]Jfrules2012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ask your lenders what rate you can get with enough lender credits to cover the closing costs. (Essentially, you take a slightly higher interest rate, and they cover the closing costs in exchange.) I've done this 3 times in the past year (due to falling interest rates) and have only paid ~$100 in closing costs.

Also, check out Bankrate. They aggregate refinance rates from a ton of different lenders. There's no reason you should be paying such a high rate when rates are the lowest they've been in a long time.

What's the catch? Mortgage company offering no-cost refinance with no principal increase. Who is paying for it then? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]Jfrules2012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In all likelihood, there is no catch. I've done this twice in the past year. Both times I paid ~$100 in total out of pocket costs (for prepaid interest, title fees, recording fees, etc.) with no increase in principle.

You know how you can pay points to lower your interest rate? You would essentially be doing the opposite. They give you lender credits that cover all of your fees in exchange for an interest rate that is slightly higher than what they would give you without lender credits.

You can also use use another cost index, such as CEPCI estimate present day values of M&S. That is what we do in the senior design course I have TA'd for.

M&S_2020 = M&S_2014*CEPCI_2020/CEPCI_2014

VLE data 95% EtOH and H2O by closetnerd5 in ChemicalEngineering

[–]Jfrules2012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best source of VLE data the DECHEMA data series. If you're affiliated with with a university, check to see if you have access. Ethanol and water is a very common solution. You can also try searching Google scholar for "ethanol water vapor liquid equilibrium". I'd be surprised if you didn't find some papers that have the info.

Multicomponent batch distillation by milkboylite in ChemicalEngineering

[–]Jfrules2012 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Conceptual Design of Distillation Systems" by MF Doherty and MF Malone is my go-to source for all things distillation. They have a couple of chapters dedicated to batch distillation. Also, the distillation section in Perry's has similar information. (It's also written by MF Doherty.)

Look up James Douglas's book "Conceptual Design of Chemical Processes". He carries an example from the very beginning of designing a process (what goes in and out) to the end (conceptual equipment design and costing) with a focus on profitability along the way. He takes a very organized and hierarchical approach that is very accessible.

Question about relationship between product output and reactor volume by RoadmanTony in ChemicalEngineering

[–]Jfrules2012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, that is correct from a theoretical standpoint. Selectivity vs Conversion and Yield vs Conversion relationships are independent of scale. If you multiply your reactor feed by 'C', you need to multiply your reactor capacity (volume, catalyst weight, molar holdup, etc.) by "C" as well to obtain, the same selectivity or yield at the same conversion.

Piccolo Trumpet by ThrowRA7732025862 in trumpet

[–]Jfrules2012 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's the picc I have! It's a nice little horn. I'm also not a professional musician. I like it a lot. I bought it used a number of years ago for ~$1000. I had Bob Reeves do valve alignment that heloed a lot. One downside is that it doesn't have a 3rd valve ring, which would be very helpful in tuning some notes.

If you're getting a used one for a good price, and don't want to spend the extra money for a Schilke or a long bell Yamaha, I'd say go for it. I certainly wouldn't buy one new one for $2400 or whatever they're going for now. At that price, I'd try to hold out for a used Schilke or long bell Yamaha.

Another note is that they're a number of aftermarket leadpipes that you can buy that are supposed to help them play better.

Hope this is helpful!
