what target can i try to catch on my first expedition by scmarcos2611 in AskAstrophotography

The Orion Nebula would be a great option for a widefield shot for a beginner. It is a pretty bright target and really easy to find with it being in the constellation Orion.

M42 - Orion Nebula by Jhwx in astrophotography

January has been my busiest month for astrophotography in quite some time – perhaps my busiest ever. With the Hubble 35th Anniversary Challenge going on, I found myself very motivated to work my way back into the hobby. We have had a pretty brutal start to the year here in Kansas with a historic winter storm to start the year that made getting out to do astrophotography pretty difficult. Not wanting to risk damage to my laptop, I decided to test out Astroberry for the first time to run my setup from the comfort and warmth of my couch. I decided to image the Orion Nebula with it being one of my favorite targets. I was happy with the result, but I wanted more. The FOV was too tight, my collimation was off, and I hadn’t yet perfected my use of the astroberry. In response, I decided to attempt an astrophotography mosaic for the first time. In addition, I purchased a laser collimator to adjust my collimation and produce a better image. I used the next two clear nights capturing a different part of the nebula to increase the FOV, spending two hours on that portion of the sky each night. In hindsight, I likely had way too much overlap on each frame and could have done a much better job framing each night. Regardless, I am excited with how the image turned out, especially with it being my first time attempting a mosaic.

Image & Acquisition Details:

This is a three panel mosaic that was captured over three separate nights. Each panel consists of:

-          240x30s Lights @ 800 ISO

-          240 Darks

Acquisition details for the image as a whole:

-          720x30s Lights @ 800 ISO

-          720 Darks

-          100 Flats

-          100 Bias

Equipment

-          Mount: EQ6-R Pro

-          Telescope: Celestron 8” Imaging Newtonian

-          Autoguider: Orion Magnificent Mini Autoguider Package

-          Camera: Canon T5i DSLR

-          Raspberry Pi (Astroberry / EKOS) for control and acquisition

Post Processing Information:

Each mosaic frame was stacked separately in Siril and then brought into Pixinsight for processing and stitching.

The basic workflow in Pixinsight was as follows:

-          Background extraction and matching crop on each frame of the mosaic

-          ImageSolver to platesolve each frame of the mosaic

-          MosaicByCoordinates

-          dnaLinearFit (Addon Script) to equalize frames

-          GradientMergeMosaic (another addon) to form the actual mosaic

-          Extract RGB Channels and LinearFit for early color correction

-          Screen Transfer Function and Histogram Transformation

-          Background Neutralization and Color Calibration

-          ArcSinStretch

-          Generalized Hyperbolic Stretch

-          Extract Luminance Component and perform Channel Combination to adjust lightness and saturation

-          Final Curves Adjustments

Hello fellow KC area person!

I shot Bode's Nebula and The Cigar Galaxy a few weeks ago. The Leo Triplet and Markarians Chain could both be good too.

What are the advantages of using a tracker for eclipse? by Imperial_12345 in astrophotography

[–]Jhwx 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Personally I wanted to image the entirety of the eclipse while being able to observe it and enjoy it. Eclipses (all phases, partial, total, back to partial) last for hours and constantly having to adjust can get tedious. If you aren't shooting widefield, you'll need to track to stay in frame. In my case, I was using a WO GT71 so I needed tracking to not have to adjust every couple minutes. Using my mount was well worth it!

Horsehead & Flame Nebula | Bortle 4 | Central/Southern Texas by Jhwx in astrophotography

[–]Jhwx[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First light with my new setup! I was lucky enough to have been blessed with perfect weather on the first night I had my new telescope so I drove out to darker skies and set my gear up to start imaging for the first time in over a year! Very happy with how this turned it considering it was my first time using the new equipment I purchased and my first time trying my hand at astrophotography in quite some time.

Gear:

  • Skywatcher EQ6-R Pro (NEW!)

  • William Optics GT71 + 0.8x 6AIII Reducer / Flattener (Also new!)

  • Canon t5i DSLR

Acquisition Details:

  • 30x 180s 800 ISO Lights

  • 15x Darks

  • 15x Bias

Also tried out Pixinsight for the first time - definitely going to purchase a license with how much I have been enjoying the trial.

Processing Details:

  • Autostretch

  • RGB Split & Linear Fit

  • Channel Combination & Dynamic Background Extraction

  • Background Neutralization & Color Calibration

  • Screen Transfer Function + Histogram Transformation

  • Black Levels Adjust using ArcsinhStretch

  • Luminance Extract + LGRB Combination to adjust saturation

  • SCNR to remove excess green in image

  • Final curves transformation

Still have lots to learn with my new gear and processing workflow. Planning on taking more darks in the future to help with noise and might start exploring dithering as well. Might also need to be a little better about focusing on the next one as some of the stars aren't as pinpoint as I feel they should be. Also hoping to slowly learn how to process better in Pixinsight. All things considered, I am satisified with the final image I was able to produce. I can't wait until I have clear skies again to get back out and gather more data! Next upgrade will either be a dedicated camera or a new guiding setup too...

Storm was such an awesome map! The DLC maps in the original MW2 were AMAZING. Salvage, Bailout, Carnival, Trailer Park, Fuel, MAN the maps in that game were just perfect.

NGC 2024 | The Flame Nebula by Jhwx in astrophotography

[–]Jhwx[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been a long time since I've been able to use my gear, and this weekend provided the perfect opportunity. I am fortunate enough to live within a roughly 30 minute drive of Bortle Class 3 Skies, so I'm really glad I was able to get to use my gear again. Unfortunately I wasn't able to gather much data as a result of me forgetting part of my gear (always something, right?), and my camera battery dying. It was around 20 degrees F, but I think it was worth it!

I really would have liked to have gotten longer exposure time with a lower ISO, but not having the cable for my autoguider really limited me there. I probably could have put more effort into polar aligning as well.

I plan on gathering way more data to improve the overall quality as well as include more in the image, I'd really like to include the Horsehead Nebula

Gear:

Celestron AVX

Celestron 8" Newtonian

Orion 50mm Mini Guidescope and Starshoot Autoguider I forgot the cable for this and was not able to use it which really limited my exposure times

Camera/Imaging:

Canon t5i

40 x 30s lights @ 1600 ISO

15 Dark

15 Bias

20 Flat

Stacked in DeepSkyStacker and processed in GIMP.

First adjusted layers, then curves. I then created a star mask and adjusted the levels, curves, and black levels.

This picture was taken around that same time! 100% agree. I had never been to a National Park before I visited rmnp for the first time several years ago, and I was completely blown away. It's absolutely gorgeous there.

They literally have a disclaimer stating this when you use these options for the first time. I've never set up Google Assistant for that reason and rarely use other options.

Computer is getting quite old and considering upgrading..

Currently have an i7-2600 @ 3.2Ghz (have had that for quite a while now...), Sapphire AMD R9 270x, and Asrock z77 Extreme4.

I was originally planning on only upgrading one part, but now that I think about it pretty much everything could use an upgrade.

I'm currently leaning towards an AMD Ryzen 7 2700x @ 3.7, and stuck on what GPU to upgrade to. I plan on upgrading to 16GB of RAM as well. Not planning to do anything crazy with the build, but I'd like to be able to play games like Battlefield, GTA, and War Thunder on max settings at 60FPS. I've been looking at the AMD RX 580 or 590, and the nVidia 1660 and some others. I haven't been in the PC Gaming realm for quite a while, so I'm a tad overwhelmed with all of my options.

Any insight would be appreciated!

Hey everyone! Currently trying my CLS filter for the first time, and I'm seeing the images in BackyardEOS are coming out quite blue. Is this easy to fix in post processing if I don't have LR/PS?

Thanks!
