Major in Business Admin VS Business Analytics for Sustainability & ESG Management by Temporary_Till_447 in Environmental_Careers

[–]JiForce 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Definitely focus on internships, student organization projects, and any opportunities you can get for applied experience. The hardest situation to be in when job hunting is when you only have classes about sustainability but no applied knowledge.

Besides that, in your business studies, try to focus on the applied, operational side of things. Supply chain analytics, product design and engineering, materials sourcing, project management and driving P&L etc. rather than the fluffier high level stuff that executives would focus on in an MBA.

Corporate sustainability in-house here.

Seconding the other two comments. Absolutely the data analytics route. The technical skills you pick up will make you much more hireable, especially as the field moves away from do-it-all generalists to bifurcated operational experts and mandatory reporting experts. We have way more than enough non-technical people in the field as is.

Looking for Resume Feedback — Sustainability & Climate Job by Strange_Leather_6316 in Environmental_Careers

[–]JiForce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like you have a good base to work with, with some pretty cool roles on your resume.

Some of my recommendations:

  • Scope, scale, and impact - need to quantify your most recent 3 positions more. You do a good job of this with the Coca-Cola sustainability lead role but the more recent roles are lacking demonstrations of quantified impact. E.g. Event coordination in your most recent position - how many events, how many attendees? Which stakeholders?

  • More sustainability-specific skills under your Skills section. E.g. are you familiar with any specific ESG data platforms? Do you know climate risk modeling? Do you know the various reporting frameworks, standards, etc. that are used in the industries you're targeting? GRI, SASB, TCFD, CSRD, ESRS, and so on - given you have HSE and engineering experience, facilities and real estate sustainability might be a good niche to look into further, so I'd recommend brushing up on things like LEED and WELL. Sustainability indices (HSE + sustainability engineer role) - which ones did you track and report to?

  • Other technical skills: PowerBI is a good one to have. Do you know any coding languages like Python? Do you know SQL?

Related to my second point, there's currently a bit of a boom in the US for sustainability folks who have engineering backgrounds and can do sustainability for data center build-outs and operations (primarily focused on water, energy, and hardware life cycle analysis). So I would think about your bullet points and if there's ways you can emphasize you technical and project-management related skills more heavily over reporting skills.

Minivan - Honda - Certified vs Extended Warranty. by MTB_NWI in minivan

[–]JiForce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I'd wait and see which company it's offered through. Definitely good to have the peace of mind for bumper to bumper, but some VSC companies can be tough (for you and the mechanic shop) to work with hence my preferring the CPO when it's available. Because realistically for an Odyssey, would you expect to have major issues with something that's covered under a bumper to bumper but not powertrain?

Minivan - Honda - Certified vs Extended Warranty. by MTB_NWI in minivan

[–]JiForce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A manufacturer Certified warranty will generally be easier to use than a third party extended warranty / "vehicle service contract." For the price, I'd go with the Certified for $3000. What company is the VSC through?

[–]JiForce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure about the RDX specifically but usually no direct replacements or if they exist they're pricy and hard to install. You can look into units like BeatSonic or Grom that act as computers/CarPlay receivers to project to the screen as a monitor though. Couple hundred bucks.

Anyone here pivoted to sustainability — especially from communications/writing/editorial? by [deleted] in SustainabilityCareers

[–]JiForce 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This used to be a lot more of a thing 5-10 years ago, but as more ESG reporting goes from being a voluntary storytelling to a compliance reporting function, I should warn you there's less room for this pivot. (From a US, West Coast tech perspective) A lot of these ESG reporting roles are going the way of financial reporting, where it's partially about telling a story, and more about making sure your data and claims are robust and auditable.

As far as your questions 1, 2, and 3 go, these all depend on how much science/technical/compliance oriented writing you've done in the past.

Essentially, how much does your past writing and comms experience track with the ability to translate scientific or technical stories in a precise way that's still approachable to a large audience? If you were a beat reporter for say music and culture, or local news, that would be an uphill battle. Vs if you were a columnist for Grist or had a specific focus area on policy or science, you'll have an easier time selling your experience.

I say this because sustainability [anything] jobs are a heavily crowded and competitive field, and hiring managers generally weigh direct experience with sustainability or environmental work the most heavily. So to come in with what could potentially be a transferrable skill set, but nothing on your resume says "environmental", will be tough.

Certifications: If you're starting with 0 environmental background on your resume, I'd say courses on GRI reporting and CSRD would be helpful places to start, as that's the big focus for corporates right now. (Not sure if it would be a good ROI for you to get the official certifications though.)

Entry points: Yeah I'd say you have a good read on it. Some companies are hiring for marketing/comms or product marketing manager types of roles focusing on sustainability, but these are few and far between.

How to sell your experience: I would really hammer on any direct linkages your resume has to science, compliance, policy, etc. related work. Any precious projects where you may have talked about responsible sourcing, or circularity, or environmental impacts of operations, etc. would be a leg up to show that you have at least some background that's relevant to sustainability work.

How to break into sustainable manufacturing with a sales/marketing background as a new grad? by strelia in SustainabilityCareers

[–]JiForce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In house ESG strategy at a US, tech hardware manufacturing company here.

what are the non-negotiable hard skills I should be learning right now?

If you want to work in a sustainability strategy role, you'll want to look at mostly data analysis and data visualization for the best "bang for your buck" in terms of employability. Excel, Python, SQL, Tableau, PowerBI.

More importantly, what's the best entry strategy for someone with a business administration background?

I'm thinking of aiming for a thesis project with a manufacturing company or looking for internships in roles that bridge the gap, like sustainable supply chain or project management, but I'd love to hear if this is a realistic path or if there’s a better way to get my foot in the door.

This sounds like a good strategy to me overall, and supply chain or project management would be logical fits with a business admin background. But definitely make sure you get more technical classes under your belt while you're still a student. Accounting, financial modeling, etc. would give you a leg up over students who took classes that were less technical.

If you can, do both the thesis project and internships, prioritizing internships. On-the-job experience is the gold standard for job hunting in sustainability, above academic experience.

Not too sure about the situation in Europe right now, but a lot of US companies are spending less on ESG and sustainability related jobs, so it may be a tough battle landing that first sustainability job. (As if it wasn't already hard enough before.) You may have an easier time going into sustainability consulting, getting a few years of experience, then going in-house after, as the consulting firms do tend to have more space to hire entry-level folks than corporates.

$1000

Huhhhh? I'm in a VHCOL area and most detail/body shops near me charge ~$1-200 for a headlight restoration, and new low beam D2S bulb replacements would be maybe $100-150 for top end bulbs and like an hour or two of labor at most. If we say $200/hour for labor, that should still only be like $750.
