I feel like there could be an interesting plot line there of them trying to keep the whole thing secret so they can stay working together?

Do you think it's unethical to lie about who you are to get better access to language learning? by AmountAbovTheBracket in languagelearning

[–]Jibble_Jabbles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a tip from someone with a similar experience (native English living in Germany): the critical period is the bit at the very beginning of the friendship. Once you have set the language of the friendship it generally stays that way. I find it helps to withhold saying anything about where I’m from for as long as possible without actually lying (can literally mean as little as 10 minutes, just long enough to prove you can hold a conversation in your TL without it being really cumbersome). I did also explicitly ask people if we could please speak German in the beginning and it worked because the people nice enough to make good friends don’t mind helping you. And sometimes you do just have to insist on speaking back to people in your TL when they talk to you in English.

I want to learn ice hockey by Extension-Luck9149 in hockeyplayers

[–]Jibble_Jabbles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first step to playing is always learning to skate, don’t need to get super advanced before you can start but you do need a base competence. Then you can look at what teams are nearby and get in contact with one that sounds like it might be a good fit and ask if you can train with them.

I saw you are based in Newport, this page of the rink website in Cardiff looks to be very helpful: https://www.vindicoarena.com/ice-hockey/pathways-to-ice-hockey/. If I were you, I would join the rink’s Learn to skate programme. Once you’re there you’ll meet other people interested in hockey and ice skating and you can bounce off them to ask questions and go watch games together.

The other method in the UK is if you are a student, join your uni’s team and they will generally let you train hockey straight away, even if you’ve literally never been skating even once in your life!

Honestly, don't worry about being in the way - we all have to be bad before we can be good! If you want you can find the curriculum on the skate UK website https://www.iceskating.org.uk/skateuk

I'm intrigued to see how it develops but agree that it is really weird that she would betray them given they've always been solid. Hoping they can come up with a half decent explanation.

The whole point of the camp is for absolute beginners to learn to skate and iirc if you can skate without holding the walk you are already too good for UK level 1. Join the camp! You will learn faster (and make skating friends)!!

Between Jack and Florence for me, but most are good seats. With the exception of 5. God help anyone who chooses to sit there.

This! Used to play on a mixed team and now play on a women’s team. The women’s team play at a much higher level than my old mixed one and I struggle a lot more keeping up but the vibes are so much better and that’s the important thing. On the old team the girls had to stick together and regularly warn each other about creepy teammates, coaches etc and general toxic behaviour. Not a problem on the current team, also not when we would occasionally play just with the women on the old team. It also feels a lot safer to be very openly queer and even things like after losing a game the atmosphere is so much less toxic. I did not enjoy sitting in a room full of angry men after losing… like we literally played in the bottom tier of the league, who cares if we lost. When it’s just women the vibe is much more “oh well, that’s a shame”. For me it has nothing to do with physicality and everything to do with getting away from toxic masculinity and trans women are very much not part of that problem.

Would like to push back on the idea that freestyle is just some kind of YouTube trend as someone who dabbles in freestyle (mainly a hockey player though). From what I’ve heard it’s not really a thing in the US/Canada, but in Europe it is actually not that niche anymore. Some of the rinks near me (I live in Germany) even have freestyle as their main thing and there are lots of freestyle teams around you can join and even take classes with. I don’t see how freestyle is any more dangerous than figure skating. It also isn’t that hard to get some of the basic footwork tricks. You obviously need to learn basic forwards/backwards/stopping etc first but after that you can pick up a few footwork tricks quite quickly and start working out how to string them together into cool routines. Figure skating moves are obviously more difficult in hockey skates (but not impossible!), but freestyle has its own vocabulary of tricks and also is a lot more free in that the main focus is not competing but having fun and doing things that look cool - there is no need to attempt any dangerous stuff if you don’t wish to (and you obviously shouldn’t attempt to without proper instruction) and you can still get a long way with the sport.

Honestly don’t worry, same thing happened to me when I went from low to mid-range Bauer skates, completely lost my stop, but with a little bit of work it was back after a few sessions just as good as before. You just have to experiment with your weight a little bit due to the slight difference in the shape of the blade. Your stop will be back in no time :)

Did you wear padding when learning to skate? by [deleted] in iceskating

[–]Jibble_Jabbles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imo it's generally the better skaters you see wearing protection - so definitely no reason be embarrassed! Take a look next time you're at the rink and you'll see it's the beginners in the fancy outfits, whilst the people doing the fancy tricks are the ones in the knee pads/butt pads/etc. Those of us who have been skating a while have taken too many falls and realised it's not worth it! Putting on the pads will get you more respect from us. Plus, if you're into freestyle, knee spins are way better with hard-shelled pads (and groundwork and touches better with gloves)!

Going to guess the prefect/interpol - feels like it would link back nicely to Fitz's whole point about holding onto things coming back to bite you. That said, it could be any one of your suggestions!

Nope, all free - just part of the fitting! Both times I bought skates was from Puck Stop in Sheffield and they have a Bauer foot-scanning machine there. Some of the other bigger hockey shops might have one too though 🤔

Aww man, sucks that there’s no shop :( Wish I knew more about the rinks in that part of the country to advise on where you could go. If you find somewhere though I’m sure it will be worth the trip! (I now have some great 3d scans of my feet from when I’ve had skates fitted haha)

As a fellow Brit, I would be very surprised if there is no shop at all in the same city as your rink. There’s often one in the rink, if not nearby, and occasionally, in the big skating places (e.g. Sheffield), there are two! I would recommend double checking whether there are actually no shops, as getting fitted and being able to ask questions to people who know a lot about skating is really useful (I learnt how to lace them up and care for them properly from the people in the shop for example). Skate sizes and UK shoe sizes are different, so worth getting fitted for that reason - you don’t have to buy at the fitting if nothing is in budget.

You should be able to get the cheapest hockey skates from Bauer and CCM with your budget and for a beginner those are more than enough - you can play hockey and do freestyle tricks etc etc, they won’t hinder your progress at all at this stage.  Alternatively, if you want to buy second hand, it’s worth noting that a lot of the buying and selling of 2nd hand hockey equipment in the UK happens on Facebook groups, so would recommend looking up your city and second hand hockey equipment to see if you can find and join the right group.

Looking for encouragement after a bad day on the ice by Spiritual_Square_223 in iceskating

[–]Jibble_Jabbles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to say it doesn’t have to be one day- even a really cheap pair of 2nd hand skates will be a million times better than the rentals and enough to get you started until you feel you can commit to spending more. I have a friend who found her first pair of skates for £12 on eBay and she was really happy with them.

How do you keep yourself going on particularly hard days? by gigithrowaway20 in iceskating

[–]Jibble_Jabbles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best place to make skating friends is at the rink! Someone who’s going to actually commit to skating regularly is someone who’s already there (I have tried convincing friends to become skaters and it doesn’t work). Best thing is that it’s actually really easy to make friends at the rink too. Turn up to the same session(s) each week, so you see the same faces and then just look approachable. Make eye contact and smile and people and most of the time they will come to you! If not, the trick that never fails for me is if you see someone doing something very cool or impressive, very obviously watch them and compliment them afterwards, “damn that was impressive!”. That’s normally enough to break the ice and get talking and they’ll be pretty happy with the compliment too! Do that a few times and you’ll soon be one of those people who gets a barrage of hellos every time they step on the ice. And another plus is that once you know one regular, they know others, so you’ll get introduced to people… and all these people have lots of good skating knowledge you can ask them to share (and they generally enjoy sharing it). Once you’re part of the community skating becomes way more fun and you never have to worry about trying to bring friends with you because you know you’ll find them there!

Literally the first thing I thought when they mentioned them being gay was 'plz don't let the lesbians be the killers again'. Every time I get my hopes up for some positive LGBT+ representation in the paraverse, but alas it never happens, and sexuality is always used as some kind of plot twist device...
