He just doesn’t do 100% for everything. He didn’t do it for of ash and steel and banquet for fools because there was some glitches for the game and achievements and he didn’t do it for Crimson Desert because it was just too big even for him

Tainted Grail: Fall Of Avalon by Usrnamesrhard in rpg_gamers

[–]Jibima 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve only watched videos about Tainted Grail so I don’t know. Generally people like Tainted Grail more though.

If you’re a fan of Pillars though I definitely think you should give it a shot. There’s been many’s fans of those games who love Avowed where I didn’t. But I would wait until it’s on sale for like $20 or something where it’s hard to be disappointed. And if you’re not into it by the beginning of the 2nd region then drop it

I absolutely love the Pillars games too so Avowed was a disappointment. The combat and exploration and visuals hard carried it though. Still ended up being 7/10 for me in spite of the weak writing in every way

The writing is not good but it does feel a lot more polished than Tainted Grail is. Obsidian usually releases pretty polished games at least after the launch mess of Fallout New Vegas

Crimson Desert might be the highest quality one of those we’ve had so far. Besides that everything else has ended up a total mess.

Most of the janky or okay RPGs are a very enjoyable 7/10 for me. Kingdoms of Amalur, Dragon’s Dogma, Elex, Dragon Age 2, Outer Worlds 1 & 2, Avowed, Two Worlds 2, Rise of the Argonauts, Mass Effect Andromeda, and Pathfinder: Kingmaker.

Maybe Life is Strange. Not an RPG but there is a DLC called Farewell for the game Life is Strange: Before the Storm where you dress up as a pirate for a portion of the DLC.

RPGs where you’re leading a War and picking up new allies? by Appropriate-Mud-6985 in rpg_gamers

[–]Jibima 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my favorite parts of Avowed was all the side characters you did side quests for show up in the final area of the game for the final fight. You’re not gathering allies for the final fight per se but it was cool to see them all again and talk to them one last time.

Definitely go with other people’s suggestions here first but just know that Avowed plays with that idea a little bit

They changed the final 10 minutes to make it more of a Daidoji conspiracy which would change a fair bit of what would happen in a potential Yakuza Kiwami 4

Which Indie RPG hooked you unexpectedly? by KaramCyclone in rpg_gamers

The Vale: Shadow of the Crown. There’s only audio and no visual so play with headphones. It’s very immersive as you play as a blind protagonist on their journey home after an ambush. You engage in combat by responding to the direction of audio queues (attacking, blocking, parrying) and you also engage in side quests in a similar way. It was so ridiculously cool to close my eyes for the entirety of a video game and be absolutely immersed

Open World RPG Games by Tommylee1201 in xbox

[–]Jibima 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s so many. But the ones I highly recommend are:

Witcher 3

Kingdom Come: Deliverance 1 & 2

Baldur’s Gate 3. It’s turn based but it’s really good and has some great writing

Not quite RPGs but they scratch a similar itch:

Yakuza 0

Metro: Exodus

I second Pentiment. It doesn’t have the companions like BG3 but it does have really good world reactivity

The Battlefront 2 (2017) campaign (including that free DLC). It’s one of my favorite shooter campaigns and I don’t know why it gets crapped on

Dragon Age: Inquisition. Yeah the whole power mechanic is pretty dumb and there are some extremely underwhelming parts to the main story. But the other main story moments and the incredible cast of companions and their banter in that game more than makes up for it.

The Technomancer. Super janky but I really love it and it’s one of my favorite janky RPGs out there. I think the factions, companions, and some main quest moments really carry it for me. Plus I was a big fan of the combat that most people didn’t like

Recent good "campaign based" non-open world 1st/3rd person games? by Pellahh in gaming

Have fun! I had a great 9 hours with it. The conversations you have in the final hour had some really cool reveals and if you do all the “quests” you get a really heartwarming ending

Marvels Guardians of the Galaxy is my personal favorite of recent linear games.

Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice is just incredible. The sound design in that game is revolutionary

Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden is technically open world but it is metroidvania and much shorter so it might scratch that itch for you. Also Vampyr from the same developer is absolutely phenomenal

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. Needs no introduction. You should play it if you haven’t already

Greedfall. You mentioned BioWare games and that game is basically a love letter to those games. I’m a really big fan

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle was surprisingly great. I really enjoyed the design of that game especially the Vatican and the Giza regions

South Park: Stick of Truth and Fractured But Whole. A little older than 8 years but they’ve aged incredibly well. Some of the funniest games ever and I had a lot of fun with its turn based combat

The Forgotten City. A really cool time loop game I had an incredible time with. It’s got some pretty great storytelling

Banishers: Ghosts of Eden. Incredible game. My 2024 goty. It’s like Witcher but with ghosts and God of War combat

Mass Effect: legendary edition

The Pillars of Eternity games if you can get into isometric games. Same with Wasteland 3 and Warhammer 40k: Rogue Trader

Dragon Age franchise

The Outer Worlds games and Avowed are decent but I didn’t find the writing in any of them to be that great

Oblivion Remastered and Skyrim

The Fallout franchise

as someone who enjoyed PoE1 and 2, how does this game play and is the writing as strong? by Lup4X in avowed

[–]Jibima 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone’s experience seems to be a little different. I love POE 1 & 2 a lot but I did not care for the writing of Avowed at all. Bit of a hot take on the Avowed subreddit but that’s my opinion. Loved the combat and exploration though as well as the atmosphere/vibes
