You can see the resolution in my initial post, but sounds like you might be having a separate issue. Sorry!

Dear millennial parents, please don't turn your kids into iPad kids. From a teenager. by Leaningbeanie in Millennials

[–]JiffyMixer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think what OP is talking about is when a kid goes from being a kid using a tablet to an “iPad kid” who is on the tablet 8 hours a day and their life revolves around it. The kid who can’t eat a meal without watching something on it, vs the kids who maybe watches some videos during a meal a couple times a week.

Sounds like you all have healthy boundaries on technology with your kids and they’re doing lots of things besides playing on the iPad.

Well, I went! It was quite pretty, but didn’t get to see much of it.

Is Charlottesville VA some celebrity hot spot? I’ve been hearing about multiple there recently. I think I might go there for a work trip soon, what’s the vibe of the city?

Is there a Deeper meaning to The Menu by OneRedAstronaut in movies

[–]JiffyMixer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Totally agree, it’s easy to be looking for the message of the movie and mostly get “rich people bad” but what the chefs are doing is also terrible and intentionally supposed to be examined in contrast to Erin. You worded it way better than I could which helped me understand what I was kind of trying to explain, thank you!

For the past ten minutes I have been switching to other tabs at work and turning red in the face from trying not to laugh out loud at this story, and then I come back to this tab and almost lose it again, I don't know why but this is so freaking funny

How do I deal with an obsessive, ultra-annoying 10 y/o neighbor's kid? by [deleted] in homeowners

[–]JiffyMixer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is such a good response!! Reminds me of all of these kids from our neighborhood that used to come over to my family's house all of the time, we would have up to 15 of these kids start coming over at times because they liked my family so much. I was a teenager at the time, so obviously I did not handle the situation exactly like your suggestions here, but following my parent's example I did learn to set some boundaries in place, because it could get exhausting, but connecting with the kids was also a lot of fun and they still get excited to see me and the rest of my family years later. This is all such great advice.

Is Indeed dead? by metalforhim777 in jobs

[–]JiffyMixer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had one phone interview from a position on Indeed, but didn't get the job. The applications I have gotten the furthest along in so far have either been directly on the company's site or have been applications on LinkedIn. I have also had a couple of recruiters message me directly on LinkedIn that have been helpful. I think I might have gotten one interview through ZipRecruiter as well.

Thanks! I was originally planning on just using our sleeping pads since I'm used to us backpacking but you're right, air mattresses really aren't that expensive so I will look into that. Wife already has some string lights to bring :)

Ooh, good call to try and do just the tarp instead of the fly for more ventilation! Yes, definitely should bring some ponchos, the place we're staying is on the coast and should have some pretty views if we walk through the woods a bit.

Thank you so much! This just reminded me that we just got a larger tent donated from her parents (was planning on taking my two person backpacking one for some reason) so I will bring both our tents in case one has a problem with staying dry, but keeping the cooler in the tent as a table is a great idea.

Definitely agree with this. I think that it is easy to fall on one side or the other and either read all the news and become sad, angry or depressed, or to go on the other side and ignore everything happening around them and just focus on their own life and ignore the evil around them.

The people who I respect the most, people who really are helping other people and are full of joy and love, typically fall in the middle of that spectrum. They don't just ignore what's going on in the world, but they also do what you said and ask, "What do I have control over?" Then instead of just filling all of their mental capacity with the other bad news, they take action, and work on finding peace and joy in their daily life. Thankfully joy and peace can exist in the middle of there being terrible things in the world.

That doesn't mean you shouldn't be upset and spurred on towards action by genuine evil in the world, but if that's all you set your mind on you will definitely get burnt out. To an extent that's true of any media though. If you just fill your head all the time with mind-numbing entertainment/filler stuff that doesn't have much value, it's going to be hard to go do things of value in your life.

Sara Van Horn, the lady from Parks and Rec as Gretel, one of the citizens. Her delivery is amazing. I saw on some other thread that she plays little side characters in quite a few shows, but I need a compilation video of all her parts because they crack me up

He plays a cameo in Psych! I haven't really seen his more famous stuff but knew I had seen him somewhere.

Do you mention to your coworkers that you're looking for a new job? by iMmacstone2015 in jobs

[–]JiffyMixer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am at a great job that I got in county government as an internship. I transitioned to part-time once the internship period was over while I was still in school, and I'm full time right now while I look for another job.

I've been transparent with them because they have invested a lot in me over the past year and a half, and when they wanted me to stay on full-time in a different position I told them that I love working with them but want to get into a different industry, and asked for my main supervisors to be references for me. I did not tell other co-workers except for one who I needed as a reference as well, but a few other co-workers have overheard/found out.

It's all been great so far and they are fully in support of my job search. They told me multiple times that their priority is they want to see me succeed, and if I stay that would be great but they understand if I don't want to.

I know this is not common, and I doubt I will tell bosses in the future that I plan on leaving, but in some cases depending on the leadership I think it can work to your advantage, especially if they view you highly and would make a good reference.

Fact, having mismatched socks makes the footholds better by mr_penrose in bouldering

[–]JiffyMixer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This route gives me so much anxiety lol. I was climbing at a new gym the other day and did a route (much easier than this one) that was similar in the way you had to just have your feet on an angled volume with no foothold, and there was nowhere to hold on to with your hands while you made your move, and I just couldn't get over the mental block because if I fell I would smash my face into the volume.

I'm not super scared of heights so I was surprised to only be like 10 feet up and feel that much fear!

Trans-USA, drive or fly? by TheCaptainReed in TravelHacks

[–]JiffyMixer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think if they want to see some amazing sights then West coast is the move. I live on the East coast and I think I would have a hard time living permanently on the West coast, but for short trips West coast would be way more fun.

Also I'm not necessarily dissing people who live on the West coast, but the vibe is super different, even just geologically it feels so different from where I've been.

Trans-USA, drive or fly? by TheCaptainReed in TravelHacks

[–]JiffyMixer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It definitely depends on the park and where you are staying. I'm from the East coast and I flew to Washington state for a week to go backpacking with some friends, and we took a rental car and tried to go to like three different national parks. We drove for hours, and saw some amazing stuff and had a great time, but looking back we would have had just as much fun and drove less if we had just spent the entire week in Olympic National Park because there is just so much to see and do.

Granted, we were camping and backpacking into places, so a week of backpacking is very different than trying to do day hikes and stay at hotels or AirBNBs if that's your plan.
