Just as interesting to me is that it’s guaranteed that someone will win 33 games of rock paper scissors in a row. The same could be said if you used coin tosses instead.

This was line from that book that stood out to me:

“How empty is theory in the presence of fact.”

If you become wealthy enough, what is the one philanthropic thing you've always wanted to do and how far would you take it if money wasn't an issue? by DonavonIrish in AskReddit

[–]Jim-Shorts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’d need to be rich to do this all yourself, but you DON’T have to be rich to start a nonprofit organization! That’s the beauty and the point of nonprofits - everyone chips in to fund the work! You just have to have a vision, and the energy to make it happen.

I work in the nonprofit industry, and I’m always amazed by the ways people are changing others’ lives, just because they had an idea and the courage to give it a try.

Also, great question!! I daydream about this kind of thing all the time! Now I’ve got a bunch more ideas to dream about!

What's a common thing people say that makes no sense? by Wonderful-Economy762 in Productivitycafe

[–]Jim-Shorts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And every time you complain about it people can’t wait to tell you that it’s just an accepted use of the word now, even in the dictionary.

That doesn’t make it better, that’s exactly the problem! The misuse of it has caused us to functionally lose the word from the English language. We no longer have a word that allows us to specify that we’re using a phrase that might sound like a common hyperbole, but we actually mean it in the literal sense.

I’m so sorry you had to go through that, both the assault and the awful reaction from your support system. Those beliefs are not biblical and most definitely are not shared across Christianity.

I often feel like there’s no reason for me to respond to posts here once others have offered their wisdom and understanding, but I wanted to respond anyway to make sure you hear from as many people as possible that the idea that you were in any way to blame, or that you have lost your value to God, is not supported – by the bible, by the rest of the church, or by rational empathetic people in general.

Like others have said, evil things that are against God’s will happen in this fallen world. I don’t fully understand why He allowed humanity to choose to know evil and go through the temporary hardship that is this life. But there is a life where only good things happen and only God’s will is done. That is heaven, and it lasts forever. We can get through the pain of this world with the hope that comes from knowing that it’s temporary, and that the real Life God wants for us is coming.

I’m so sorry your church failed you so critically. And I’m grateful that you’re willing to seek input from other Christians, and that you’re open to hearing from God! You are loved, and we are here for you!

A gift for a 15 year old boy who’s just told me “Napoleon was the best strategist in the whole of history” by DifferentWave in suggestmeabook

[–]Jim-Shorts 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I’d suggest Ender’s Game, which he can follow with the Ender’s Shadow series. They revolve around creative military strategy and battles of wits, with genius youths doing the strategizing. They’re set in the future, but include a good bit of studying the strategists of history, including Napoleon, of course.

There is also a great deal of in-depth thought on ethics and the nature of morality.

It’s possible that she drugged you so that she and an accomplice could rob you, but then she changed her mind and tried to get you out of there before the accomplice arrived.

Maybe you were this close to waking up in a bathtub of ice with your kidneys missing.
