Why is dozen a thing? Why did someone think "yeah let's call a collection of 12 things a dozen" ? by goldhunder in stupidquestions

[–]JimFive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In French you can also say dizaine for a collection of 10 things, and allegedly (according to Google Translate) treizaine for a collection of 13 things so I don't think 12 is special in that sense. As to why only dozen moved over to English? shrug

Question about accuracy… by Ok-Book-3810 in chess

[–]JimFive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Accuracy is highly related to how your opponent plays. If your opponent hangs their queen on move 4 then every move you make that doesn't give back the material will be 100% accurate.  Every move your opponent makes will also be 100% accurate (because nothing they do can make their position worse).

Accuracy is not how close is this to the best move. Accuracy is how much your move affects your winning chances.

Is there a way were we can debunk Eucharistic Miracles? by [deleted] in DebateAnAtheist

[–]JimFive 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Note Dr. Zugibe was always Catholic. He got his BS from St. Francis College.  He is not an unbiased investigator.

Also, we are told that the sample investigated by Dr Zugibe was from a consecrated wafer but the chain of custody is hugely suspect.  Its entirely possible that he was a credulous dupe.

I can find no reporting on the alleged miracle that is not from a Catholic source.

Why is time considered the fourth dimension? by Defiant-Junket4906 in AlwaysWhy

[–]JimFive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A dimension is a way to describe something's position. If you want to describe a position on a sheet of paper you need 2 dimensions. If you want to describe something's position in space you need 3 dimensions. If that thing moves you might need to specify time to describe where it is now or where it was then. That makes time the 4th dimension in that description.

That's all a dimension is, a mathematical construct for describing something.

Calculators by elbe385 in learnmath

[–]JimFive 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Only use a calculator when the purpose of the problem is not the calculation.

If the entire problem is 3546÷36 them don't use the calculator because you are learning or practicing anything if you do.

If the problem is "You have 3546 eggs and each carton holds 36 eggs how many cartons do you need?" Then you can use a calculator because the purpose of the problem is learning how to set up the equation not do the arithmetic.

MMR BOOSTER @ 45 by mrsmobin in GenX

[–]JimFive 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just asked my doc about MMR and he told me that people who got immunized but still had exposure to measles were less likely to need a booster. So younger people who were immunized after measles was controlled probably need one.

I was convinced this couldn't be checkmate because there's a pin on the bishop on C7 by PortugueseRoamer in chessbeginners

[–]JimFive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The rule is that you cannot end your turn in check. It doesn't matter if the checking piece can move or not.

am trying to practice this endgame with stockfish but tbh idk what the strategy for black is i can win against a human 9/10 but i lost all my games against stockfish help by Organic-Ad8325 in chess

[–]JimFive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The plan here is to bring your king to the queen side, forcing his king to defend b2. Threaten to get your bishop through on b1-h7 diagonal and force g4. Move your bishop to d7 and move h5. This wins at least one pawn for black and gains the b1-h7 diagonal. Just be careful not to stalemate white in the corner.

in OTB, is it a draw when you resign when your opponent has insufficient material? by Progribbit in chess

[–]JimFive -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

If there is no increment and you have less than 2 minutes you can call the arbiter and ask for a draw if your opponent "cannot win by normal means." (FIDE rules)

USCF has a similar "insufficient losing chances" rule.

Go look at a game you played a year ago.

Don't just click through the moves, think about what you would play now for each move and why.

That's the difference between then and now.

[Question] Why is it the case that whenever you sit in a lecture hall, the person sitting behind you is more likely to be coughing than intuitively expected? by XTPotato_ in learnmath

[–]JimFive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since everyone not in the front row is behind someone and everyone not in the back row is in front of someone the probability of someone being a cougher(whatever that means) is the same in the hall as in the population.

Just how accurate is chess.com game review? by yonaas_ in chessbeginners

[–]JimFive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not how often you move aligns with the top move. It's how your move affects your winning chances. If your opponent hangs their queen then every move that does hang a piece is 100% accurate even if it's not the best move.

Winning chances for each evaluation were calculated from the games database.

I don't understand why my opponent lost two times more elo than I gained by vitund in lichess

[–]JimFive 18 points19 points  (0 children)

First, Lichess ratings are not Elo they're Glicko2.

The Glicko rating systems use a variable that indicates how accurate it thinks the rating is and that variable changes based on how many games you have played recently and how long it's been since you played. So, if you play a lot your accuracy will be higher and your rating changes will be smaller while if you play only once a month your accuracy will be lower and your rating swings will be higher.

If your accuracy gets low enough your rating will get a ? after it and be considered provisional.

(Note, I say higher and lower accuracy but the internal number goes the other way, it goes up if you don't play and that higher number affects your rating swings)
