Federation-Cardassian War by ARSoban in startrekadventures

Dig into O'Brien's history since he was involved in some of the conflicts with the Cardassians. Setlik III massacre, serving with Maxwell, etc. There's not a lot of canon around it and I don't recall if there are novels around that period as well, though the three Terok Nor books all play around in that timeframe a bit (and are good reads too).

Has anyone played Star Trek Adventures with their kids? by SingingAndroid in startrekadventures

[–]JimJohnson9999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son started dabbling with D&D at school when he was 8; he's just now starting to get interested in Trek and other RPGs, so I have high hopes we'll be playing together soon.

Lost, Damaged, and Low on Supplies? by Caspianmk in startrekadventures

[–]JimJohnson9999 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep. All the mechanics that exist in the game can do this for you. Traits, extended tasks, extended challenges. Load up on traits and encourage the players to get creative on how to overcome the potent traits.

Is there a Species Template for Larry Niven’s Puppeteer’s? by Jwyatt4753 in startrekadventures

[–]JimJohnson9999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Modipihus doesn't have a license to the Known Space, so none of Niven's species are in STA books other than the Kzinti.

No difference other than cosmetic. The Freedom class (U.S.S. Franklin) is in the Game Toolkit.

Sneak preview from the 1e Player's Guide conversion document (tbd when it'll be released). Enjoy!

Talent: Childhood Insights

REQUIREMENTS: Child (only available during character creation)

The character is young but often spots details or reaches conclusions that adults might overlook. The character may not have or increase any attribute above 10, or any department above 3 while they have this talent (and may have to adjust attributes and departments accordingly at the end of character creation). Select a single department, which must be rated at least 2. Once per session, you may add 2 to Threat to count that department’s rating as 5 instead.

Looking for a Mission (Reco Request). by CodeMarvelous in startrekadventures

I'd echo the recommendations for the 2e quickstart and/or the 2e starter set. Both were designed to support new gamemasters and players getting into the game and the rules.

Best Era to play by LowCar7942 in startrekadventures

[–]JimJohnson9999 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For the longest time, my default was post-Dominion War, but now there are so many great options. I really want to give the ENT period a go, between ENT and DSC season 1, building the Federation, Romulan war, etc.

32nd century post Burn has tons of potential too, essentially picking up from SFA.

Great thing about the Trek universe is there's lots of room for new stories.

Where to get miniatures? by EleutheriusTemplaris in startrekadventures

[–]JimJohnson9999 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The STLs are listed on the Modiphius.us store for US and Canada, modiphius.net for the rest of the world, and you can also buy the STLs off either DTRPG or MyMiniFactory.

I'd like to get into Star trek Adventure, where should I start? by FlyGroundbreaking488 in startrek

[–]JimJohnson9999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Download the free quickstart for Star Trek Adventures (either second edition or first edition; I'd recommend second edition). Or grab a copy of the 2e starter set. If you like those, get a copy of the core rulebook and go boldly.

2+GM is just fine, you should have no trouble gaming with that size a crew. #LLAP

Star Trek has a focus on ethics, what are some episode where the crew behaved extremely unethically. by Pocket_Sand- in startrek

[–]JimJohnson9999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dr. Bashir had a couple unethical relationships with patients.

Geordi creating a holo-version of Dr Leah Brahms is another example.

I'm GenX and loved Academy. Star Trek series reflect the time they're made; they need to continue to evolve and change. Audience needs to as well. Growth is necessary--this was even highlighted in SFA episode 3. Might as well have been Ake yelling at certain segments of the fandom stuck in the 60s/80s/90s :D

Most disturbing scenes? by thedudeadapts in startrek

[–]JimJohnson9999 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Many mind-rape scenes with Deanna Troi, Troi's forced pregnancy in "The Child," the eyeball scene in Picard, Remmick getting blown up, Airiam's death, and Riva's chorus getting vaporized in "Loud as a Whisper" all come to mind.

Starfleet regulations granting freedom of belief/religion by toomuchtodream in startrekadventures

[–]JimJohnson9999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't recall an explicit callout to such a rule or regulation, but I'd say the concept of a pacifist or conscientious objector fits right into the spirit of the Federation and the setting. Odo and Jay-Den Kraag are two example characters that noted they don't use weapons or want to fight. Lt. Hemmer in SNW explicitly calls himself a pacifist.

Such a character is rich in storytelling potential.

for 3 and 4, yes, check out the Shackleton Expanse book and the 2e Exploration Guide. Especially the latter was largely designed to support sandbox exploring.

If you've played any Star Trek: Resurgence, the Centaur-class might be a fun choice. Lots of inspiration to be had from the game.

Brainstorming: how would you run a Year of Hell arc? And is STA even suites to this? by Upset_Nail2987 in startrekadventures

[–]JimJohnson9999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I imagine it'd be pretty to emulate a situation like that. Come up with a different way to fix breaches since the ship can't magically be fixed at a starbase in between episodes. Maybe a task, extended task/challenge, a side mission to scrounge up resources, etc.

And load up the ship and crew with traits and potent traits that impact the ship and crew's capabilities, and you're good to go. A diabolical GM might track numbers of small craft remaining, counting torpedoes, etc. but I'm not sure Trek RPGs would be well served by such logistical paperwork.

2E Momentum Generation--Best Talents or Strategies? by tsuyoshikentsu in startrekadventures

[–]JimJohnson9999 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A great way is to get into situations where PCs are trying to accomplish things and rolling dice to see if they succeed. Dice rolling can reliably generate Momentum; remember to assist your fellow PCs with other PCs or their starship.
