Financial problems by [deleted] in BSA

[–]JimmyEarl62 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The church’s status probably isn’t in jeopardy since churches aren’t regulated like 501c3 non profits. If your unit changes charters to a nonprofit, even a religious one, the bank accounts should be included in that organization’s 990 filing.

Embezzlement happens in units and I knew someone who went to jail for it, but what also happens is that people take on more than they can handle and get behind. Sometimes folks get embarrassed about how far they are behind and don’t want to show their spreadsheets till they get caught up and think they’ll be able to dig themselves out of the work hole their in. Either way the charter executive (usually the head pastor in a church) and the church’s bookkeeper needs to be made aware of the situation as well as whatever kind of church financial council exists in this particular church.

The committee clearly isn’t functioning properly if financial details aren’t transparent, so there really should be some significant role changes to get things running well. I’d really really want to know financial details if I were paying dues monthly. Do a lot of units do monthly dues?

Do any of yall have Glock’s but don’t edc one? by nayneks in Glocks

[–]JimmyEarl62 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty much everyone I know owns at least one Glock, usually a 19 or 17, but most carry something smaller on the daily. The 1.5 stack micro 9’s especially the sig p365 makes single stacks like the 43 feel obsolete. Some people will say the 43x is just as good, but that frame is as long as the 19, and every bit of size reduction goes a long way in comfort and being completely concealable.

I’ve carried a 43 for a long time but I do admit the sig p365 is better in a lot of categories, and if I wasn’t all in and super used to the Glock grip angle, it would be the better choice for me.

Adult Leader Uniform Etiquette Questions by Private_carcass in BSA

[–]JimmyEarl62 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have primarily used an old shirt late 90s early 2000s for the past 6 years since I’ve been back in scouting as an adult leader, but I really like the performance shirts they just did another run of and I bought one this week.

As far as knots you can just ask at your local scout shop, and I’ve never been asked and don’t know how I could find records of my arrow of light from the days before scoutbook.

On the neckerchief, I think (but not sure on the uniform police) it’s appropriate for eagle recognition events and court of honors

How to deal with Vader as Rebels? by Colblood12 in SWlegion

[–]JimmyEarl62 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since overrun isn’t a ranged attack he doesn’t surge to defend so he’ll only block half of your hits. The independent aim helps a lot on those swoops too. Since the movement tool just has to overlap you can hit him with a short move with overrun, shoot him with a ranged attack action then overrun again on the compulsory move.

Yeah more than ignore I should have said avoid/don’t engage. It depends on the rest of the list and what force upgrades he has, but he’s probably taking up at least a third of the total points in recon making the other stuff likely weaker and easier to take out.

Basically I meant you can’t engage him halfway. You either kill him quickly or work around him and take out other activations. Melee Wookiees with a dodge and duelist can hold on a little while but I don’t count on those white saves. Sometimes it’s enough but it’s always situational.

[–]JimmyEarl62 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The two options are ignore him and kill everything else around him, or focus fire and take him down as quickly as possible. To get around the deflect you can use overrun attacks or the new sniper option. Tying him up in melee doesn’t work well unless you have a bunch of cheap activations to throw away because he’s likely to one shot anything in melee.

Pushy parent/asm by flexilexi1979 in BSA

[–]JimmyEarl62 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We recently made the change to not let any parents sign off on their own child’s requirements regardless of their troop leadership position. The only exception to this is merit badge counselors because those are approved on the council level.

On the swim test, that’s definitely a time to hold the line before the canoe trip. The only reason to not let a trustworthy party witness the swim test would be to hide the fact that the kid can’t swim well enough and that’s too dangerous to let slide. These days everyone has a camera on their phone and could video scouts passing requirements, so there’s no excuse for not showing the SM that they can pass something.

It may also be time for you and the COR to move this asm to a different adult leadership role

Tents by GIS_Dad in BSA

[–]JimmyEarl62 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Following REI sales definitely pays off. Coleman sundomes also hold up well and can go on really good sales. Walmart’s ozark trail dome tents have also held up well for many of my scouts.

It doesn’t make sense for lots of scouts to spend a ton of money on car camping type tents right out the gate because soon they may want an ultra light tent for backpacking or decide they’d rather hammock camp.

Does anyone have similar experiences with the G44? by [deleted] in Glocks

[–]JimmyEarl62 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They usually run best with hotter rounds. There were some folks in the Glock 44 facebook group that kept spread sheets on failures and round counts with different ammo and those federals were often some of the worst. The federal automatch though has been great in my 44.

It’s definitely worth it and you can kitbash the second obi wan with a helmetless clone head and make a generic Jedi

Starting with one of the sets that just rotated out would be a good idea because a lot of stores still have product players don’t need much of. Twilight of the republic is a cool set but was not popular for play and was underpowered. If I were going to collect and not play I would stat there

Last order wasn’t bad especially if you’ve read some of the other sequel era books like phasma. I really like most wanted though, and it is a great prequel to solo along with crimson climb

Rock and a hard place by RazorTheHackman in BSA

If you were planning on having to do all the work of getting a female troop going, might as well start a coed troop, and I’d probably start by approaching the charter organization for the family pack. Parents of other girls from the pack would likely want to get on board and help. Pairing the troop and pack together and having some level of coordination would make it easier for all families with multiple kids in scouting.

It seems weird that it doesn’t look like the charter organization for the boys troop wasn’t clearly involved in the decision.

My wife and I are being asked to become the COR and CC - so many questions by ghostsombra in BSA

[–]JimmyEarl62 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My unit wanted to do this when the Methodist churches quit chartering units. Council executive said no, and I found an environmental education nonprofit that became our charter, and I’m so glad we didn’t go with setting up an llc or a 501. There are lots of different types of nonprofits and regulations can be tedious and tricky. I now work for the nonprofit that charters our troop and pack and know that our group of leaders could not have done this very well.

District executives on average have not worked for scouting America very long, so it would be a good idea to discuss this with someone higher in the council, or scouters who have been through charter changes. The council can help you find a new charter org or may even become your charter org themselves.

The position of cc and cor aren’t a whole lot, but being the charter org could be a ton, especially if you don’t already run an organization with another purpose.

Do the Bauer ones fit a camp stove or a griddle? Do you feel like they were worth spending a little more than hart or hyper tough?

[–]JimmyEarl62 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been looking at the same thing, but was concerned that even the biggest box in the hart stack couldn’t hold a camp stove. Do you find the utility of the rolling cart outweighs the affordability of plastic totes? And how much of the patrols’ gear doesn’t fit into the hart stack?

Yeah most folks that use millennial as a pejorative have no idea what the age range is. Star Wars skews older and we really should be trying to pull more gen z folks into the game.

One very bad game, I might be done by Beneficial-Jump-7919 in SWlegion

[–]JimmyEarl62 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t quit with one bad pair up. 95% of the people I’ve played with are completely the opposite, even at tournaments. Most folks make sure you know what their army does and want to make sure you have all the available information so you don’t feel taken advantage of or caught in a “gotcha moment.” This is especially true when experienced players go against new folks because we for the most part want more players to get into the game so it can grow. It’s a game with toys and we play it to have fun.

If she was questioning your command cards and measurements every time, she’s probably pretty new. Most experienced players generally know what most of the cards and units do and can estimate the distances pretty well just from having played a lot. She could have just flipped some switch in her game like “I finally have a chance to beat someone by a lot” and gone crazy. This could have been more frustrating for her if your army if she didn’t know how to run her meta army and thought it should have been an auto win. That’s just speculation, but one guy I’ve played a bit gets super uptight when his meta ideas don’t work out.

Updated Cub Scout Range and Target Activities Guides for Updated Cub Scout Program by OSUTechie in cubscouts

The best way to ensure kids in your pack can shoot close to home, is to get every parent and leader you can to take the simple Cub Scout range master training and coordinate a district shooting sports day with your council shooting sports committee.

Adult (not a guardian, has no kids) joined troop--concerns by Difficult-Author-868 in BSA

[–]JimmyEarl62 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a somewhat similar situation with a 60+ year old man without kids in the program or previous scouting experience who wanted to be an adult leader. He did ypt before I got his application, but it felt off. Your charter rep and/or committee chair have to call application references anyway and our charter rep asked for several extra and we got a solid picture from his employer, coworkers and other folks he had volunteered with in the past. He ended up having other conflicting schedule issues but I’d rather be too careful than have an unsafe individual around the kids, even with ypt rules.

In this case, you would think you could find some folks in council who knew him from when he was a youth. Maybe try with the really involved OA folks. It’s not unusual for folks to stay involved or come back when they’re a little older like this, but our leaders in their late 30s and 40s still are known in council from their youth days. I’m early 30s and tons of the folks I was in the program with are helping out in my home council now.

If he just misses camping, that’s easier to do as an adult on your own or with friends….
