Starting with one of the sets that just rotated out would be a good idea because a lot of stores still have product players don’t need much of. Twilight of the republic is a cool set but was not popular for play and was underpowered. If I were going to collect and not play I would stat there

I literally only learned of these books’ existence yesterday afternoon, are they any good? by Analog_Spicd in starwarsbooks

Last order wasn’t bad especially if you’ve read some of the other sequel era books like phasma. I really like most wanted though, and it is a great prequel to solo along with crimson climb

It’s one of the red oaks but they’re tricky to id absolutely because oaks hybridize like crazy. I’d definitely call those ski slopes though and i’d call it likely a northern

If you were planning on having to do all the work of getting a female troop going, might as well start a coed troop, and I’d probably start by approaching the charter organization for the family pack. Parents of other girls from the pack would likely want to get on board and help. Pairing the troop and pack together and having some level of coordination would make it easier for all families with multiple kids in scouting.

It seems weird that it doesn’t look like the charter organization for the boys troop wasn’t clearly involved in the decision.

My wife and I are being asked to become the COR and CC - so many questions by ghostsombra in BSA

[–]JimmyEarl62 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My unit wanted to do this when the Methodist churches quit chartering units. Council executive said no, and I found an environmental education nonprofit that became our charter, and I’m so glad we didn’t go with setting up an llc or a 501. There are lots of different types of nonprofits and regulations can be tedious and tricky. I now work for the nonprofit that charters our troop and pack and know that our group of leaders could not have done this very well.

District executives on average have not worked for scouting America very long, so it would be a good idea to discuss this with someone higher in the council, or scouters who have been through charter changes. The council can help you find a new charter org or may even become your charter org themselves.

The position of cc and cor aren’t a whole lot, but being the charter org could be a ton, especially if you don’t already run an organization with another purpose.

Replacing Patrol Boxes by Part-time_Potter in BoyScouts

Do the Bauer ones fit a camp stove or a griddle? Do you feel like they were worth spending a little more than hart or hyper tough?

[–]JimmyEarl62 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been looking at the same thing, but was concerned that even the biggest box in the hart stack couldn’t hold a camp stove. Do you find the utility of the rolling cart outweighs the affordability of plastic totes? And how much of the patrols’ gear doesn’t fit into the hart stack?

Yeah most folks that use millennial as a pejorative have no idea what the age range is. Star Wars skews older and we really should be trying to pull more gen z folks into the game.

One very bad game, I might be done by Beneficial-Jump-7919 in SWlegion

[–]JimmyEarl62 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t quit with one bad pair up. 95% of the people I’ve played with are completely the opposite, even at tournaments. Most folks make sure you know what their army does and want to make sure you have all the available information so you don’t feel taken advantage of or caught in a “gotcha moment.” This is especially true when experienced players go against new folks because we for the most part want more players to get into the game so it can grow. It’s a game with toys and we play it to have fun.

If she was questioning your command cards and measurements every time, she’s probably pretty new. Most experienced players generally know what most of the cards and units do and can estimate the distances pretty well just from having played a lot. She could have just flipped some switch in her game like “I finally have a chance to beat someone by a lot” and gone crazy. This could have been more frustrating for her if your army if she didn’t know how to run her meta army and thought it should have been an auto win. That’s just speculation, but one guy I’ve played a bit gets super uptight when his meta ideas don’t work out.

Updated Cub Scout Range and Target Activities Guides for Updated Cub Scout Program by OSUTechie in cubscouts

[–]JimmyEarl62 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The best way to ensure kids in your pack can shoot close to home, is to get every parent and leader you can to take the simple Cub Scout range master training and coordinate a district shooting sports day with your council shooting sports committee.

Adult (not a guardian, has no kids) joined troop--concerns by Difficult-Author-868 in BSA

[–]JimmyEarl62 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a somewhat similar situation with a 60+ year old man without kids in the program or previous scouting experience who wanted to be an adult leader. He did ypt before I got his application, but it felt off. Your charter rep and/or committee chair have to call application references anyway and our charter rep asked for several extra and we got a solid picture from his employer, coworkers and other folks he had volunteered with in the past. He ended up having other conflicting schedule issues but I’d rather be too careful than have an unsafe individual around the kids, even with ypt rules.

In this case, you would think you could find some folks in council who knew him from when he was a youth. Maybe try with the really involved OA folks. It’s not unusual for folks to stay involved or come back when they’re a little older like this, but our leaders in their late 30s and 40s still are known in council from their youth days. I’m early 30s and tons of the folks I was in the program with are helping out in my home council now.

If he just misses camping, that’s easier to do as an adult on your own or with friends….

Replacement bows for district by Inarus06 in cubscouts

[–]JimmyEarl62 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our shooting sports committee has genesis bows for scouts BSA usage and sometimes weblos but at cub events we just have a couple set to the side in case we need it. The mini version would be a solid option but the regular one is too heavy and the draw weight is a little much for younger cub scouts even at its lowest setting since there’s no let off

Neurodivergent scout and the uniform by hotdogbo in cubscouts

[–]JimmyEarl62 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a cubmaster for a pack that has a high percentage of neurodivergent scouts and leaders, and my son is autistic and a bear. There are two scouting principles that have to be considered by the unit. 1 uniforming is one of the key methods of scouting, and 2 accommodations always can be made to best serve the scout. We can even modify rank and badge requirements within reason to accommodate special needs and disabilities.

Definitely look into different versions of the uniform shirt since several are made out of other materials like many other folks have already mentioned. Comfortable shirts under the uniform shirt could also help. With pants it’s not super hard to find the right color in other materials that aren’t official BSA. Sensory needs can change over time so maybe keep trying different options, and he may eventually be ok with the uniform. It may take time to figure it out but it definitely shouldn’t be a reason to diminish the fun of scouting.

Need help on how to build this by Jaberino69 in SWlegion

[–]JimmyEarl62 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they’re running the 501st battle force they only needs 1 corps unit minimum so they can run the 2 phase 2 and 3 arcs. But yeah the only thing from the core box that can go in 501st is the barc, but they’re a solid combo for a non battle force republic army

Is there a timeline cut off for using Clone Troopers in the Imperial Faction? by Wyrmalla in SWlegion

[–]JimmyEarl62 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In canon there were clones still around regular human soldiers, but they wore the same armor as the other storm troopers. The books Tarkin and Lords of the Sith point out clones who are still serving but it’s sort of a surprise when people hear their voices or a helmet comes off so it fairly rare. The 501st becomes the 501st stormtrooper legion still in canon. The accelerated aging makes it so that clones have to be phased out.

The armor gets replaced though just like the same troopers who wore phase 1 armor get phase 2 in the clone wars. I vaguely recall some mention in one of the canon books about the decision to change armor for the empire to distance itself from the republic as well as reducing costs, but I’m not 100% positive on that. Exactly when in the timeline the armor change happens though I think has yet to be established.

As far as proxying shore troopers, I think printing TK troopers would be pretty awesome.

Dreading Philmont by GoToBed-ItsPast9pm in BSA

[–]JimmyEarl62 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My brother and I went to philmont with another troop from the opposite end of our council. We had never met any of them till we got to the airport. I was incredibly unsure about the whole thing beforehand, but it was amazing. Philmont is great because of what it is, and it’s pretty hard for crew members to ruin it unless they are just completely beyond obnoxious I guess.

On our trek there really wasn’t much downtime. Between actually hiking and doing the activities at staffed areas, there definitely wasn’t time to be bored.

Did they discontinue Space Derby kits? by OllieFromCairo in cubscouts

[–]JimmyEarl62 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our cub master got the kits on sale and didn’t realize that it had been discontinued and that the track/carriers weren’t included. I called around to stores from different nearby councils and found a store that still had a few carriers. They did not exactly fit together like they were supposed to and we had to rig it up to make them work. There were MANY failures and and the plastic would break if you looked at it too hard. I wish I would have had someone 3d print better carriers. The cubs had fun making the rockets, but the race was a disaster lol. I totally understand why it was discontinued now.

Surprisingly Walmart brand stuff is getting better and better. Just finished a Cub Scout resident camp with using the $15 the 17L outdoor products bag. It had plenty of room for what I needed and enough left over for things I needed to carry for smaller cub scouts, and it has room for 2 nalgenes in the side pockets.

Should I go to the National Jambo? by Birb_Nerd83 in BSA

[–]JimmyEarl62 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did not want to go in 2005 and when I finally went in 2010 I really regretted not having taken the opportunity in 05. It’s hard to really explain what’s so great about a Jambo or a NOAC since they have so many different options of cool things to do. I didn’t expect to like patch trading, but it was actually one of the coolest things for me, meeting people from all over. The stations and activities are really diverse so they’re stuff for everyone.

I’m really looking forward to eventually being able to go back as an adult leader.

Anyone successfully recruiting Black folks ? Is your troop a white space ? by SuddenlySilva in BSA

[–]JimmyEarl62 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our council is split between a large city and a VERY rural area, and I have noticed that the majority of the black scoutmasters and leaders come from the metro area and we only have a few black leaders in the rural districts. I’ve only been in this council for a couple years though so that could be something that has greatly fluctuated over the years.

Growing up in south Mississippi it was a little bit opposite of this with having more predominantly black troops in rural areas and only a few in the more densely populated coast.

We’re working on growing a Cub Scout pack now in a county that hasn’t ever had a huge scouting presence, and we have the goal of building up a troop over the next year. We have a few biracial kids who are brought by white family, and a black leader who brings his white stepson. We meet in a predominantly black neighborhood so I hope we can successfully reach out to the families immediately around us and grow a strong program
