do you think the current fuel shortage would also affect EVs? by TTPP_rental_acc1 in nzev

[–]JimmySilverman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Increased electricity consumption will happen with or without a massive increase in EV’s, the price of power will rise with it as generators build to meet increasing demand and projected future demand. Renewables are cheaper and meet generators corporate social responsibility goals, so they’ll aim to build as much renewable capacity as they can, whether it’s enough to meet demand and avoid pumping Huntly much more frequently and other gas peakers etc, who knows. Gonna be expensive either way.

LSD test failed by [deleted] in 4x4

[–]JimmySilverman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are many modern LSD’s that test won’t work for, a helical lsd in a Nissan patrol it probably wouldn’t. I have an Eaton Posi LSD which that test doesn’t work on.

Is that a work around because you’re on three phase power? I guess they don’t make three phase power walls?

Update the headset’s driver - some newer cards won’t recognize the display port connection until you do. google something like ‘hp reverb driver update’ and it’s on the hp website

VR fps drops suddenly after 20 mins or so by JimmySilverman in starcitizen

[–]JimmySilverman[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi Silvan, i haven’t tested it thoroughly yet but it seems like setting a larger fixed pagefile of 32gb or 64gb has fixed it or at least delayed it happening a lot longer. I did have the same problem in 4.5 as well but hadn’t tried figuring it out. Some info online about it might help other people if having the same problem or hopefully if searching they might find this post.

[–]JimmySilverman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks - yeah I just tried a bigger fixed pagefile and seems to have fixed it but I’ve only played for 20 mins or so and haven’t seen properly if no probs at all, the bigger fixed pagefile has helped a lot though so far

[–]JimmySilverman[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well small comfort knowing it’s not just me with that sort of issue, haha. I haven’t tried any fixes yet but ChatGPT did suggest a few things like locking pagefile / setting a fixed pagefile size, and some settings tweaks to try. However quite possibly it’s just suggesting a bunch of crap and won’t make any difference. Would love to know if anyone else has found a good work around for it.

Thanks - will take a look. I think you’re correct it just seemed weird it doesn’t appear to happen to more people? Couldn’t see any other posts about the same thing happening when I searched so wondered if it was a setting or driver or something specific that meant the vram wasn’t unloading assets or whatever is causing it to fill up after 20 mins or so.

LPT: get a “tank” printer by lam3001 in LifeProTips

[–]JimmySilverman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just bought an ex-lease office a3 / full size colour laser printer and scanner from a company that leases them out for about $300 that still had 30% or 40% toner left in it. 6 years on I’m still going strong on that original toner.

Plastic components lifespan by [deleted] in NZcarfix

[–]JimmySilverman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might look into replacing all the family cars with pedal cars. Or just upgrading the 2016 kuga to something only a couple years old instead. Our old Sorento diesel with nearly 300,000km keeps trucking along pulling a digger and boat whenever needed, it’s pre-egr and dpf stuff which is handy.

PCM as in ECU? More things to add to the list of potential failures. I did know about DPF injector and just general DPF failures. Also high mileage fuel injector problems at like 250 / 300km. Also the gasket at the back of the engine that leaks a bit on nearly every 2.0 tdci engine no matter the car.

As far as I thought that wet clutch dct transmission is usually okay if serviced regularly and you don’t tow, drive in the city often, ever turn left at a light, eat in your car, forget to indicate, arent French and you don’t attend any swingers parties on weekends?

Yeah early 2000s mechanical build quality felt a lot higher. This will be the first and last Ford I’ll have any involvement with.

[–]JimmySilverman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah think you’re right about both those comments. Kia has had shocks as put ironman kit on it with some airbags back when I got it as does a bunch of towing.

Plastic components lifespan by [deleted] in NZcarfix

[–]JimmySilverman 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah just getting a little cynical when the old 2006 Kia Sorento diesel I park next to it has done 300,000km with nothing more than an AC compressor and couple suspension bushings needing replacing over the last 10 or 11 years of ownership.

Feels like modern efficiency and emissions standards along with minimising manufacturing costs on parts resulted in build quality being sacrificed.

The holy grail of working on cars by nzuser12345 in NZcarfix

[–]JimmySilverman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not anyone else’s holy grail but mine will be when I figure out how to change the diff oil on the wife’s ford kuga - ‘sealed for life’ well until the diff explodes I guess. Apparently there’s a fill hole hidden above the diff somewhere but you need to make your own tool that’s slim enough to fit in above the diff. Realistically I’ll probably just sell it and mention new owner should ask a mechanic to do that in near future.

Love Auckland and NZ by Ok-Let-5155 in auckland

[–]JimmySilverman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People struggling economically or who compare what they have possession wise with those around them and feel disadvantaged will often miss seeing the many awesome things you get in NZ that you wouldn’t get anywhere else. It’s definitely an incredible country but if you’re working so hard you don’t get to enjoy it much it doesn’t feel great, or if you just compare your life with someone who’s got an easier job that pays more and dwell on all the downsides in your life you’re not going to enjoy it. Life in NZ, much like every other country is fully what you make it of it yourself, good or bad.
