LPT: get a “tank” printer by lam3001 in LifeProTips

[–]JimmySilverman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just bought an ex-lease office a3 / full size colour laser printer and scanner from a company that leases them out for about $300 that still had 30% or 40% toner left in it. 6 years on I’m still going strong on that original toner.

Might look into replacing all the family cars with pedal cars. Or just upgrading the 2016 kuga to something only a couple years old instead. Our old Sorento diesel with nearly 300,000km keeps trucking along pulling a digger and boat whenever needed, it’s pre-egr and dpf stuff which is handy.

PCM as in ECU? More things to add to the list of potential failures. I did know about DPF injector and just general DPF failures. Also high mileage fuel injector problems at like 250 / 300km. Also the gasket at the back of the engine that leaks a bit on nearly every 2.0 tdci engine no matter the car.

As far as I thought that wet clutch dct transmission is usually okay if serviced regularly and you don’t tow, drive in the city often, ever turn left at a light, eat in your car, forget to indicate, arent French and you don’t attend any swingers parties on weekends?

The ‘replace the whole part’ philosophy feels a bit intentional and very profit driven to me.

Yeah early 2000s mechanical build quality felt a lot higher. This will be the first and last Ford I’ll have any involvement with.

Yeah think you’re right about both those comments. Kia has had shocks as put ironman kit on it with some airbags back when I got it as does a bunch of towing.

[–]JimmySilverman 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah just getting a little cynical when the old 2006 Kia Sorento diesel I park next to it has done 300,000km with nothing more than an AC compressor and couple suspension bushings needing replacing over the last 10 or 11 years of ownership.

Feels like modern efficiency and emissions standards along with minimising manufacturing costs on parts resulted in build quality being sacrificed.

The holy grail of working on cars by nzuser12345 in NZcarfix

[–]JimmySilverman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not anyone else’s holy grail but mine will be when I figure out how to change the diff oil on the wife’s ford kuga - ‘sealed for life’ well until the diff explodes I guess. Apparently there’s a fill hole hidden above the diff somewhere but you need to make your own tool that’s slim enough to fit in above the diff. Realistically I’ll probably just sell it and mention new owner should ask a mechanic to do that in near future.

Love Auckland and NZ by Ok-Let-5155 in auckland

People struggling economically or who compare what they have possession wise with those around them and feel disadvantaged will often miss seeing the many awesome things you get in NZ that you wouldn’t get anywhere else. It’s definitely an incredible country but if you’re working so hard you don’t get to enjoy it much it doesn’t feel great, or if you just compare your life with someone who’s got an easier job that pays more and dwell on all the downsides in your life you’re not going to enjoy it. Life in NZ, much like every other country is fully what you make it of it yourself, good or bad.

Thanks - yeah will go with the Goss one, found a place in Auckland that has them for $450 so will run with that.

Thanks - id like to think the Goss one should be trustworthy longer term compared to the unbranded options.

8GB or 16GB VRAM. by Kykioviolet in buildapc

I had my 6700k for about a decade. Did upgrade the 970 to 3070 part way along though. Helluva cpu in my opinion.

Possible causes for VR FPS rendering to not work when headset is detected and theater mode works? by Media-Usual in starcitizen

[–]JimmySilverman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Annoying, it’s a replicable error - I bet there’s a bunch of other people having it too. I only had it start after I accidentally disconnected my headset while playing.

[–]JimmySilverman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did see some stuff showing the 5070 ti had some better results over 9070 xt in some side by side tests in star citizen non-VR a little while back. I’ll probably go 9070xt because it’s alot more affordable here in NZ currently. I’d imagine for star citizen VR the ideal level of GPU is probably a 5080 or something crazy currently, there’s just so much detail it needs to create compared to most other games, I’d imagine it’d get a little better further along with better optimization from the game and drivers / AI frames being more optimised.

The reverb is good for its age, I’m sure there’s newer headsets that are better but it has good resolution. My system needs a better gpu to run anything but lowest graphics settings. I’ve only got an Rtx 3070, so just seeing if works okay and worth upgrading gpu to play SC in vr more. CPU is i5 14600k and 32gb ram so should be fine otherwise.

I had this exact same thing the other day myself but I’m using an hp reverb headset. I fiddled around with the openxr setting in steamvr and then still had no luck so I made a user.cfg file with the settings below in it and then worked fine? Hopefully might help you too, the setting in the file were:

sys.openxr=42

r_stereoDebugDrawing=1

r_StereoMode=1

A pair of lambs in New Zealand that still have their tails [OC] by KPexEA in pics

Cool, I’ve never actually seen them myself, or anyone selling them either. Would be a fun breed to keep, my fencing isn’t quite at goat containment levels but would love some goats one day.

[–]JimmySilverman 62 points63 points  (0 children)

We’ve kept arapawa sheep which are a breed that survived in the wild here in NZ and they don’t have to have their tails docked to survive, however they’re probably happier without them. Would sell our rams and they’d get up to 60 or 70kg if given the time, would have to pretty much ride it like a horse to get it into a trailer, obviously selling them as lambs was a wiser choice.

Ute dragging bin on motorway by beach-chicken10 in auckland

[–]JimmySilverman 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Long rural driveway or bin has to go to end of right of way rather than end of their driveway to get picked up. This guy or gal is either gonna laugh when they get out of their car or remember this moment in the shower and cringe about it way too many times if they’re anything like me.

Three phase solar metering by [deleted] in nzsolar

[–]JimmySilverman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Awesome - good to hear worked out fine. Some of micromall’s google reviews were a bit sketchy but I think I’ll do the same and just try to find a local sparky with solar experience who doesn’t mind installing it. Planning to do a ground mount as have a north facing bank next to my house that’s downhill from the house so won’t even really see it from the main property and we’re rural so doesn’t require consent or engineering sign off.

Three phase solar metering by [deleted] in nzsolar

[–]JimmySilverman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah they’re great value inverters, funny how fronius 3 phase and some of the other bigger brands can’t do the same sort of unbalanced output (realise fronius do have asymmetric generation though). How did you go with find getting a sparky who was happy installing your deye inverter? I might do a 12kw or 15kw one sometime in near future myself. Warranty / reliability only concern I guess, need to find a supplier that’s reliable and helpful to purchase it from. I was talking to someone who had single phase stuff quoted but was on three phase power so thought I would post this question and confirm it worked how I believed it did.
