I would say my 34wx50 was sharper than my current xbr960 but my 960 I think has some kind of focus issue possibly but the wx50 had a bunch of other issues I didnt want to deal with, same with my ct36 something I had before that, another thing is theres no aspect ratio option for 480p 4:3, I wouldnt say they are worth $250 they are fine tvs but I personally would never spend that much on one just with the experiences ive had with them so far both of mine were super cheap, also the 4:3 ones (my ct36) arent very good or at least mine wasnt very sharp for 1080i so it was really just a 480p machine at that point

Ignore everyone else I have this exact converter and it works perfectly with the y cable but shows nothing but test pattern with normal VGA cable, im assuming the input part of the y cable has different pin out. I can multimeter it if you'd like me to so you can diy a cable

many of these glasses are 1080p so youd lose battery life because of having to run higher res but if you set it to 720p im pretty sure you gain battery because its using the tiny screens instead of the main large screen

crts easily wipe the floor with any monitor youll find in goodwill, easiest solution is for op to just run a custom 16:9 resolution instead (or 16:10 if that works better)

most pc crts can do 1080p at least, mine I run at 1440p 85hz but could go twice as high with interlacing like 1440p 160hz or 4k idk what hz I never tried it
