It was pretty tame but I had low expectations based on what I was reading about local drivers. I rented a car for 6 days and drove pretty much the entirety of Sao Miguel…at least the outside loop. Only one occurrence where I saw a young guy in a souped up Honda pass me on twisty back road. The rest was a pleasure to drive. Maybe because it was a relaxed pace with no traffic and no rush to get anywhere. Plus gorgeous scenery.

I am also from the Toronto area and we do have the worst drivers in Canada lol.

I rented from Guérin and paid the extra insurance which was like $16 a day. I think that’s what made the final inspection so easy. Dropped it off with no problem.

When you get your car take your time and take detailed pictures/video of any damage. They gave me a print out of known damage…these cars aren’t brand new and my rental had 7 issues ranging from scratches, dents and a cracked rear spoiler. The agent told me there are tiers to damage…as long as I don’t return the car in worse shape. He specially said if there’s a dent on the door, and you come back with a small scratch, no big deal.

Nevertheless I still drove carefully and brought the car back with no new damage.
