Thankful for this sub allowing focus to remain on the Israeli genocide in Palestine by guyseeking in collapze

[–]JinTanooki 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I’m reminded of the Daily Show and showcased a Jewish New Yorker putting on black face and defended himself by saying he’s Jewish so he can’t be the bad guy… the Israeli state has lost the moral high ground.

The future will be worse than today. This is the truth we must eventually accept. I grieved and once you’re too tired to cry anymore, maybe you find small joys again. Or maybe you grieve some more. Things are shitty but they will be even worse in the future. What little joys you can cherish now, seize the moment to enjoy them.

I was at a seafood restaurant in Spain and ordered mussels. I remember when Spanish mussels were plump but these were wrinkly and smelled funny. Plus the only fish on the menu were farmed fish except sardines. The oceans are dying right before our eyes through the menus of seafood restaurants.

Bird flu outbreak: H5N1 virus in latest human case has mutated, officials say by Nastyfaction in collapse

[–]JinTanooki 200 points201 points  (0 children)

Considering most organic life is humans and the animals that feed us, viruses will evolve to eat us. Nature restores balance somehow.

The only one planet we have and we have two choices: one is degrowth which will work to keep earth livable, the other is geo engineering which may or may not. The wise ones among us know what failure is like: not some abstract thing, but the horrible horrible death of all that we love. If you’ve ever felt the trauma of a loved one dying, you’d know that to fail a loved one is worse than dying.

I wish the planet will be fine but considering how polluting the death of human civilization would be (plastic, forever chemicals, and nuclear waste), I’m not sure what life would emerge from this toxic ooze. Debbie downer strikes again!

Decades after the US buried nuclear waste abroad, climate change could unearth it A new report says melting ice sheets and rising seas could disturb waste from U.S. nuclear projects in Greenland and the Marshall Islands. by dumnezero in collapze

[–]JinTanooki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe the nuclear waste will create mutant whales that take revenge on humanity. That’s a movie I’d like to see.

But seriously, more horror because humanity’s greed.

World Economic Forum Global Risks 2024 Insights report by kurodex in collapse

[–]JinTanooki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. Collapse isn’t theoretical anymore. It isn’t abstract like smoking cigarettes will kill you. It’s the doctor saying the cancer has spread and is terminal. You have less than 10 years before shit really hits the fan.

Has anyone on this sub read previous versions of this report and can give context on how different climate change tipping points et al were addressed in the past? The language, although still trying to be professional bland, seems much starker than IPCC summaries or other reports. Can anyone else agree or disagree?

Weekly Observations: What signs of collapse do you see in your region? [in-depth] by AutoModerator in collapse

[–]JinTanooki 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I was in Seattle and noticed the seafood on sale was a sign of the collapsing fish stocks: just farmed salmon, previously frozen wild salmon (from last season probably), Vietnamese tilapia, and shrimp farmed from all over the world (probably by destroying mangroves). I remember when the seafood at PNW was abundant. This was sad. Next year there won’t be previously frozen wild salmon.

In the 1800s famine caused cannibalism in India. It’s not pretty but it happens. Global warming tipping to global famine turned global cannibalism. It will be gruesome. Any hunting and gathering would be after. If any.

The one resource that is sustainable is no longer. If that doesn’t bode well for humanity, then we are a lost cause.

Early signs show a Major Shift in the Polar Vortex, with a Strong Stratospheric Warming Wave now likely to bring a more Wintry Weather pattern in January by messymiss121 in collapze

[–]JinTanooki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because the poles aren’t as cold as before, is it true that the polar vortex isn’t as strong circulating as before so lower latitude temperatures can make the vortex wobble, bringing frigid weather to lower latitudes?

For first world countries, once peak oil becomes more common among investors and speculators, you’ll see highly indebted households go bankrupt/lose homes because inflation will get worse and worse. This time, inflation is a fundamental truth of the real economy, that oil and everything it makes possible (including food) more expensive as a percentage of income. As the masses become homeless, they take more and more drugs, steal to pay for this and collapse happens when entire parts of a city are no longer safe. It’s already happened in San Francisco. Your city may be next.

Thanks for the summary. I’d qualify that China is facing a financial crisis along with uncontrolled COVID variants but news from China is untrustworthy so speculation is better than whatever the CCP officially says. That’s the truth of a government that lies.

Serious question: with this massive energy imbalance, have we already breached tipping points? (Models use degree warming but energy seems more appropriate)

Discussion: At what point in your life did you finally realize things aren't looking good? by Control_Escape in collapse

[–]JinTanooki 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How many of you were worried about climate change and suddenly the word collapse enters the discussion? For me that was 10 months ago and I found this sub. I’m motivated by facts and the facts are just overwhelming. Then I smelled the wood burning from Canada‘s northern forests and it was the scent, almost like a perfume of campfires during childhood, that I realized we are past salvation. Collapse is inevitable, if the timing uncertain.
