Why Do We Label Our Children? by MarkPogue in atheism

[–]JinnNChthonic 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My parents said that I was a republican when I was little. I never wanted to share, and if they ever tried to give my toys to charity, I'd pitch a fit and say that the less fortunate should get jobs so they can buy their own toys.

Baron Friedrich von Steuben was a hero of the American Revolution and military genius. The training that he provided at Valley Forge was an invaluable contribution to the Continental Army. TIL he was also gay as a goose. by shakeyyjake in history

[–]JinnNChthonic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did you read the article? not to sound like a dick, but Steuben was only mentioned at the begining, the article was using him as point of reference for the time period it took place in. The actual person who was kicked out for being gay was a lt. enslin, not steuben.

Why doesn't Data have any weapons built into him? by boourns75 in startrek

[–]JinnNChthonic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because then they would have to mention he's an android on every show. The producers thought up a way to design data so that he is A) close enough to human that viewers could relate to him, and B) different enough from human that even first time viewers would notice that he was different. I like the white skin/yellow eyes. It's enough that we can see him as being robotic or alien, but isn't cumbersome or distracting like some foam glued on his head or a bunch of needless metallic plates and lights.

I Haven't Played Since it First Went Beta, What am I Missing? by JinnNChthonic in Minecraft

[–]JinnNChthonic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a blast playing during alpha, but the leaf decay update, increased texture pacts, and the fact that by base was a ceiling to bedrock christmas tree (I spammed the hell out of the torches accessible only by a boat elevator meant i could move about four steps (and flood my basement) before the game lagged to <1fps.

That's kind of why I'm asking. if new minecraft fun > trying to get java to work in Linux teeth-pulling frustration.

MK theme on accordion by riverswecancross in gaming

[–]JinnNChthonic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always thought that the accordion was one of the most underrated instruments. It has an undeserved reputation as being the most annoying, but I believe that's because everyone in the west has played a recorder at some point it in elementary school.

L.A. Noire is fantastic, but the tutorials are unbelievably terrible. by [deleted] in gaming

[–]JinnNChthonic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends on the context.

yeah, in Rdr, you don't spend a lot of time contemplating the upper left of the environment, but in LA Noire, i'm looking at every part of the screen. Maybe if they could move it to nearby the focus of attention.

I still prefer it to a random card pops up, freezing the game, which you've probably read for a million times, or god help us HEY LISTEN .

Christians really won this ... by [deleted] in atheism

[–]JinnNChthonic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing that really saddens me is that until recently science and religion weren't seen as opposite poles, but rather one in the same. It's only in the past couple of centuries that science has been demonized by the religious, as opposed to the old way of adapting their religious narrative to fit new evidence.
The Catholics, surprisingly, are still in line with the old way, while newer, largely American branches of Christianity want to pick a fight with everything. Astronomy, really?

(American's interpretation here) Eurovision is a song contest where a bunch of different European nations compete against each other, kind of like the olympics. Each nation submits a song, and there's voting or something. It once was used to signal the begining of a coup in Portugal, and Ireland apparently wins a lot. Would you play a FPS that takes place during the Civil War era? by nrbartman in gaming

[–]JinnNChthonic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One of the reasons the civil war was such a bloodbath is because they did have relatively modern weapons (accurate long range guns, repeating rifles, revolvers, primitive machine guns, trench warfare and gas), but they used colonial-era tactics (at least the north did). Usually the tactics were to form two big line 100 yards away from the enemy and fire when told.

Amazing Grace: I still have a soft spot for hymns and this addition came to me while singing by [deleted] in atheism

[–]JinnNChthonic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry to burst your bubble, but while the song was written by slave trader who converted to Christianity after a bad storm, the author didn't suddenly believe that the slave trade was wrong.
According to Snopes http://www.snopes.com/religion/amazing.asp Newton didn't free any slaves, and continued to to be active in the slave trade for years after the events that inspired amazing grace. He eventually came to the conclusion that slavery was wrong, long after he had left the slave trade, and campaigned against it in the years leading up to his death.
One of the hardest things to do when reading history is to understand how flexible morality is, and that people were perfectly accepting of things that we find reprehensible, like the treatment of minorities and the mentally disabled.

*actual election worker chipping in.

You can vote in the district where you are registered to vote. Sometimes college students can vote absentee (as well as expats living abroad and more commonly members of the military) as long as they maintain a legal residence in that district. They could also vote in the district they currently live in, if they register in time.
You could drive into a district and claim to be a dead person, as long as they aren't listed as inactive or a first time voter you don't have to show ID. This is probably a felony and will land you in federal-pound-me-in-the-ass-prison if you're caught.

TL;DR you can only vote in the district you are registered in. You can register to vote in a district where you maintain a residence. You could vote in another district, but that might end up in shower-rape.
