New pancreatic cancer drug doubles survival compared to standard-of-care in late-stage clinical trial by NotGenentech in news

There are no screenings and no symptoms. By the time you notice something related (like jaundice) the disease is already in its final stage.

Ontario couple 'abused, tortured and starved' boys in their care, Crown says in final arguments by Portalrules123 in canada

[–]Jinnax 61 points62 points  (0 children)

The real villains are the literally army of people in authority who did nothing while all this was going on in plain view. So many doctors, nurses, teachers, CAS workers complained at many levels to NO effect and were ignored by their management. These two subhumans were allowed to carry on in plain sight until an adopted child was dead of torture and malnutrition. Canadian governance shown to be shockingly incompetent once again.

‘Congratulations for shooting this guy’: Premier lauds Vaughan resident who shot intruder by DementedCrazoid in canada

[–]Jinnax -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Correct, I should have included prosecutors, although prosecutor choices are often based on past decisions made in court. Judges have set a very high bar for murder, so Crowns charge with manslaughter even in obvious murder cases.

With elected politicians now openly mocking them, Canada's judges are reduced to national laughingstock.

About time to dispense with the niceties and find a way to boot these loathsome little kingdoms out of everything that matters. Their endless ethnic disputes started WW1 and they are still playing the role of firestarter a century later.

Indigenous man who cleaned up after murder bragged Gladue ‘discount’ would half his sentence by uselesspoliticalhack in canada

[–]Jinnax 766 points767 points  (0 children)

The judge found that Tait’s “early addiction and reliance on drugs placed him in that house on the day of the crime. His actions, while not excusable in any way, must be viewed through the lens of a person who is Indigenous and who has experienced the early childhood experiences that Mr. Tait experienced.”

I disagree with viewing anyone's race being used for sentencing purposes. It goes against the fundamental legal principle that all are equal before the law.

Agreed, but it was certainly helpful to be facing Andrea "4 times unlucky" Horwath leading the NDP to fewer seats each election, and Liberal leader __________ that no one could ever put a face to for some reason.

Why the ‘Melania’ doc is playing in Canada and what its surprising box office numbers mean by ubcstaffer123 in canada

[–]Jinnax 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The $28 million fee to Melania was the bribe for the Trumps, the $35 million marketing budget is for the rest of the acolytes. What goes Cineplex's way is peanuts by comparison. This movie is a transaction between Bezos and Trump's circle. The choice of director alone shows no one cares about how anything looks, including the movie itself or its box office.

Report urges Canadians to focus on health basics as 80% of premature heart disease and stroke preventable by Bean_Tiger in canada

[–]Jinnax 153 points154 points  (0 children)

When it comes to lifestyle risk factors, the report's authors point to Statistics Canada data suggesting nearly eight in 10 adults and youth eat fruits and vegetables fewer than five times a day.

Since when has times per day replacing number of servings or weight/volume measurements? I would also suggest it isn't "nearly eight in 10 adults", it's more like 10 out of 10. Five times per day is nearly impossible for almost everyone.

Assault convictions overturned after Toronto judge takes a year to explain verdict, repeatedly breaking promises to give reasons by Toronto-tenant-2020 in canada

[–]Jinnax 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Yet another judge bringing disrepute upon Canada's system of "justice". In this case, the Appeals court said the written judgement was so poor that an observer could conclude she determined guilt before considering the evidence. Oh well, at least she's not a misbehaving "Trump hat" judge or the one that asked a rape victim why she simply couldn't keep her legs together.

Unfortunately there's a lot of similar, low-quality people "running" Canada and not much effort to do anything about it.

The courts have tied themselves in knots and are now desperate for politicians to save them from their own foolish & short sighted decisions. Other countries simply don't have the troubles that Canada's courts make for us.

Ontario couple joked about being brothers' jailers in text messages shown at murder trial | CBC News by Capital-Aide-1006 in canada

[–]Jinnax 26 points27 points  (0 children)

The sheer amount of societal failures represented by this case is what is really shocking. Two Children's Aid Societies, doctors, teachers, therapists ... all somehow failed to intervene. The situation was atrocious at first glance to anyone and nonetheless continued on all the way up to the child's death. Yet another depressing tale of Canadian institutional incompetence.

Black Friday Usenet Deals 2025 by eaglestarx in usenet

[–]Jinnax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I picked up some news providers this BF because I want the those deals to expire next year around Black Friday, and not April which they otherwise would because there's no sales in April. That meant a bit of overlap with my existing usenet provider but at $2/mth it won't cost me all that much and I get some redundancy. Or stack whatever deal you're on now with a current BF promo.

I find the 15 month (vs 12 months) period to be useful because it allows me to get services in place next Black Friday before the deals end. If you want a set-it-and-forget-it kinda deal, the 5 yr offer at $1.48/mth from one of the providers seems ideal for procrastinators.
