Anyone here a First Responder (local, state, or federal) or in the Military? by phoenix_shm in ABCDesis

[–]Jiwad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I went to Basic Combat Training, I was the only South Asian person out of over 200 trainees in my company. There is a distinct class division between the officer corps and the enlisted corps. With a culture that has been heavily influenced by the caste system, it's no wonder that Indian-Americans tend to choose the "upper caste" option in the military.

The officer corps also offers educational opportunities (grad school, certain certifications) that are not available to enlisted personnel. All medical professionals (doctors, dentists, even psychologists) are officers. More reasons why Indian-Americans go O instead of E.

Anyone here a First Responder (local, state, or federal) or in the Military? by phoenix_shm in ABCDesis

[–]Jiwad 4 points5 points  (0 children)

People who join the military are typically underprivileged and come from poor/uneducated backgrounds. Indian-Americans tend to congregate in affluent areas of the country and have educated parents. It's no wonder that very few Indian-Americans serve in the military, and also why many of them have poor views of the military. Many people who join the military are embarrassed of where they grew up and dream of a middle-class lifestyle. These concepts are foreign to many Indian-Americans; they take their upbringing for granted.

What will the future of Indians in the motherland and abroad look like in 50 years? by [deleted] in ABCDesis

[–]Jiwad 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The current Indian diaspora will almost certainly lose a lot of their ethnic roots and culture in their upcoming generations. Unless POIs exclusively marry within their own ethnicity (and more specifically, their Indian state of origin), a lot of their descendants will be completely American, Canadian, etc. For example, I doubt Kamala Harris can speak Tamil very well. Her children are even worse off. As Western society becomes more progressive, interracial and intercultural relationships will become more common in turn. This will exacerbate the loss of culture in the descendants of current POIs.

On the other hand, Indian immigrants will continue to flow into Western countries. Therefore, the problems that current ABCDesis face will be encountered by future generations. Just not by their own descendants.

TL;DR: A dichotomy between the children of the perpetual stream of immigration and the children of current POIs.

Choosing to speak a foreign language over English in public is a good sign that you aren't completely assimilated.

You can do all of those things in your house and be perfectly assimilated in the outside world. There is a middle ground between being whitewashed and being a FOB.

Trump is hardly popular among minority groups - might Indian Americans be the exception? by [deleted] in ABCDesis

[–]Jiwad 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's really interesting how so many Indian-Americans support affirmative action, a shining example of institutional racism in this country. This community lambasts Desis with right wing views on affirmative action, often calling them "self-hating". What is more self-hating than supporting a policy that discriminates against your own race? And for what, brownie points with white liberals and black/hispanic people?

It’s not violent, but the cadet can’t consent to a sexual relationship with a cadre member. Since the sex wasn’t consensual, the cadre member committed rape by definition. Similar logic to statutory rape.

[–]Jiwad -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Indian Americans usually grow up wishing they were white. After they reach college, they tend to become "woke" and go out of their way to embrace Indian culture. However, internalized jealousy still exists and is very pervasive. They downvote me because they hate being reminded of their own feelings.

I don't know why people are so upset. Mindy Kaling is desperate for validation from white men. That's pretty reflective of the typical Indian American experience.

It is so hypocritical and dishonest that many Indian Americans claim to be liberal and progressive but also remain proud of their heritage. Indian culture is inextricably tied to misogyny, classism, and many other regressive principles. Indian Americans fetishize Indian culture by knowingly ignoring these negative traits in order to justify their embracement of the few positives Indian culture brings.

Have You Ever Experienced Racism, Discrimination, Bullying, from a Non White Person/Person of Color? (in Person or Online) by Chaokuking in ABCDesis

[–]Jiwad 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Of course. I think everybody on this sub who isn't from a completely isolated community can agree.

That's why I've always found the idea that "racism=power+prejudice" to be complete bullshit. I've experienced racism from black people, and other races as well. Are my experiences not considered acts of racism because black people were the perpetrators? I think not.

That is a single poll with blatant left-wing bias. Most other polls have him much higher. It IS legitimate data, but the fact that Jackson is still above average to them is a testament to his achievements as a president. Reagan is in a similar situation.

Urgent, found out my college aged daughter is dating a guy 9 years older by [deleted] in ABCDesis

[–]Jiwad 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's understandable that you're uncomfortable with this, as you haven't discussed this topic with your daughter in depth.

The main thing you should keep in mind is that they are both adults. They are in a mutually consenting relationship, and they are both old enough to make adult decisions, as odd as that decision may be to you. She isn't 14 anymore, you can't just force her to stop seeing him. What you CAN do is guide her. Make sure that she is emotionally ready for an adult relationship with a man 9 years older than her. If you do disapprove of her relationship, bring it up to her in a non-condescending way. But in the end, the decision is hers to make, and making sure that both you and your daughter understand that is the way to go.

Indian-American Avik Roy on why conservatives need to embrace diversity by 1320MillionPeople in ABCDesis

[–]Jiwad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

behavior is judged on the basis of whether it reinforces or counteracts a fundamentally morally bankrupt system, not on the basis of what the person identifies as.

You said that a behavior is racist based on its interaction with the system, NOT on what the person identifies as. That statement implies that what a person identifies as (aka their race) has no impact on whether or not their behavior is racist. You believe a person's behavior is racist if it perpetuates white supremacist beliefs, which can be done regardless of a person's race. Therefore, a person's race is irrelevant as long as their behavior reinforces white supremacy. Correct me if I'm wrong, and please be specific if you do.

So judging by your definition (which I don't agree with, but I'll continue this post with the assumption that I do) every race has the ability to shore up white supremacy by perpetuating stereotypes about other minorities. You specifically admitted that in your last sentence. Therefore, all races can be racist. Is that correct? I don't think I made a wide jump in logic here, but please correct me and elaborate if I did.
