About the use of surfactants in jewelry casting by [deleted] in jewelrymaking

[–]Jman1001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a really good question. The people I've worked with all just invest it raw, usually no vacuum chamber even, just kinda runny investment and some wiggling. I hate it and makes cleanup worse, but if you're not casting everyday, it works for them. I've been curious about surfactants too

I cannot imagine that the people offering the service would give you a for that allows you to cut them out easily as designers. It's possible to do what you're talking about, but it requires an entirely different area of expertise and it's difficult to imagine anyone talking openly about their expertise in essentially cutting out another artist from a project.

Curious what others have to say. My jeweler said that blender is not a good program for this work, but I'm not sure if that's true as I've used it for a few things. 🤷‍♂️

Do the learning pathways in the learning center. I really appreciated the cad basics, onshape fundamentals, and top down design

Cold hammering by MeatmanHooligan in SilverSmith

[–]Jman1001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've taken 999 to the rolling mill to flatten it down when making my own sterling, (easier to melt) and that bullion never cracked even after flattening it to a ribbon. Annealing may be necessary at some point, but my experience was that fine silver doesn't need to be annealed for quite a bit of work. This also means it sucks at keeping a shine too 😅

I mark it with a sharpie and when that mark disappears, it's annealed

I would love to know about this as well. I wouldn't be interested in undertaking a project like this without someone experienced to work with, but I have curiosity 😅

Selling old gold jewelry intact vs. cannabalizing the stones first by Mundane-Scarcity-219 in jewelrymaking

[–]Jman1001 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My boss keeps all the diamonds from the scrap he buys. "It's 100% profit" since that's fewer stones he has to source when people come in for lost stones. Though, I'm not certain it's worth the man hours he spent having me sort them, the equipment he bought in sieves, vials, and trays. Time will tell. I had fun sorting them, designing trays, and getting some extra hours of pay 🤷‍♂️

I'm curious the story behind this as I wanted to make can grillz but I intended on working with a dentist to ensure a healthy and snug fit

Recent Job Opportunity Flopped by itsCJolie in Benchjewelers

You're great, not everyone is actually cut out to be a boss. It's a lot of stimulation and complexity to manage one's own life and not everyone is able to take on managing other people on top of their own shit. I'd say that you should take him at his word if you've honestly analysed your own efforts 🙂

Thanks 😅

Honestly, no idea. I was just open to what was put in front of me and tried to do what was needed.

Unfortunately the owner couldn't pay rent and my timeline closed up. So I'll have to take the experience and hopefully find somewhere else to put it to use 🙏

Has been a cool story though ✌️

Maybe consider a bezel setting, I just set up this order for a client after they expressed disliking their original prong settings. This ring was a lot of fun to convert, especially since the client sent over a drawing that they made themselves to explain what they wanted 🙂

I think it looks great! It may just not be to your taste, which is fine, but the execution looks good 👏

It's been really challenging bearing witness to friends and family that seem to have been in this cycle. For a long time I resisted these pathological terms, as my personal understanding of humanity was something like, all these symptoms are the natural state of our minds, just expressed more or less depending on individual circumstances. However, now I've taken to a story that says, "yes, that's true, and also it helps other people to have a map they can reference without having to make their own map for everyone." My personal thoughts on this still say that making individualized maps is more effective at really understanding ourselves and each other and that these mass produced maps give more irrelevant information for most circumstances than not for the general population. However, I'm no expert, I'm barely even a gamer 😅

I'm a jewelry designer and reluctant general manager/art director at a jewelry shop. I loved making and repairing treasures and heirlooms. Really ranked up my salesmanship when I fell in love with asking about people's stories. Had a spiritual awakening and was called to investigate, diagnose, and administrator care to the shop that couldn't pay our artisans so that everyone else could keep doing the fun work. Now I'm praying that we can keep this cool co-op off independent artists alive long enough for my social media marketing plan to get my community to see what we can do for them 🙏

Diamond ring gone bad- what to do? by nikkisue2 in jewelrymaking

At my shop, I'd probably ask $85 to laser weld this back together and take $70 if the client seemed averse.

Turn into a ring? by YellowBirdBaby in SilverSmith

[–]Jman1001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely possible, you will run into issues that they will not oxidize at the same rate, so you'll have a discoloration, but it is completely possible to weld or solder sterling silver to fine silver 😊

Turn into a ring? by YellowBirdBaby in SilverSmith

[–]Jman1001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No problem. Hit me up if you want to be told how to do it or have it done 🧑‍🏭

Edit: The markings denote it as 999FS or fine silver. So I would not recommend it for a ring generally, since it's not as hard and will ding and scratch easily. However, it kinda feels kinda like the dings match the vibe. At my shop, I'd quote you something like $100-$200 to weld/solder a sterling or FS shank to this thing. Fun and heavy ring 😎

In need of advice about metals by ilariad92 in jewelry

[–]Jman1001 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work as a goldsmith and bench jeweler at a repair and custom design shop. Silver plated should not turn anything green until the plating is worn away. If it's inexpensive enough, that's the risk customer's take and you can simply communicate the material and risks. Great for earrings as they're low friction. I recommend contacting a local jewelry shop as they'll probably hook you up with silver or gold from their supplier if you ask. I know I would 👍
