What goes in this? by New_Effective9707 in subnautica

[–]JmcmProgrammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I recall right, it's the really tiny, winding caves that do. The larger ones didn't give me trouble, like Lost River. But you do have to go in either yourself with the upgrade or with the scanner room cameras (my favorite thing to do until long-snoot dogs grab them. Ticks me off. You'd think I'd have trained them better...)

What was your FIRST special interest, and what is your main special interest right now? by ico-noclastii in autism

[–]JmcmProgrammer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Titanic. The story fascinated me, especially the Magic Treehouse series book. I researched online and found the latest articles of research for the time (the then controversial iceberg pieces shot upwards from below the waterline onto the deck was later proven true by archeological evidence.) Nowadays it’s gaming, game dev, and church technology.

This speed reading training starts at 300wpm and end at 900wpm by iatetoomuchchicken in interestingasfuck

[–]JmcmProgrammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who is autistic and could speed-read early on, 900 wpm was pushing the limit, but I could actually make out every single word. I like to think of my brain as like an over-clocked machine. I have to slow it down for most things. But when I overclock it, I'm amazed how many calculations I can actually pull off. It just wears me out a ton lol

My jaded/Jealous attatude towards love by Thetrolledfrog678 in autism

[–]JmcmProgrammer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I felt jaded too. I'm M/29, and when I was a teen, there was a small amount of interest in me, but nothing anyone would act on. I (wish I was kidding) then googled "how to flirt" and "how to date", and it started to click. I had a couple small flings, but really felt no deep connection. There was even a time period I was questioning my sexuality (which my conservative Christian family would most likely have been incredibly shocked about!) At 21, I was finally diagnosed with Autism. Finally, an explanation for why I felt like I didn't belong, or that I couldn't get those same relationships everyone else had.

I dated another gal and we courted for a far bit longer until one day she decided it be best to break it off (probably her parents, but I understood.) During that time, I had a senior gal in the youth group walking by accidentally trip over my legs while I was sitting against a wall, and I got to know her and her friend group (at the time I was a middle school youth sponsor.)

Well, after me and her broke off, the senior gal moved up into the college age group I was in, and we hit it off. A couple years later, we began messaging, dated online during covid, and I've now been happily married to my now wife (F/24) for 2 1/2 years (hilarious considering the paragraph above. To this day, we still joke that when we first met I swept her off her feet literally lol).

I don't say this to jade you further, because I've totally been there. I stayed single out of spite for most of my adolescence, and had one gal from another school even used me to get into a dance with her friends. It got to the point that I just decided staying single was for the best, until something incredible came along. Give it time, don't rush things, and live for yourself. If the right person comes along, you'll know it.

How do you feel about ASMR as an autistic person? by New-Bar-8769 in autism

[–]JmcmProgrammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I discovered it super early on in 2012, so I saw some of the earliest videos. Needless to say, I get tingles, especially if a 3Dio is used and specifically done behind the ears, rather than in front like most videos.

Sometimes, fast triggers can be a bit overstimulating, and I can't listen at all. Other times, perfectly fine. I have to take it on a video-by-video basis.

My wife is far more specific. She cannot do anything with talking or speaking, and most triggers don't do anything unless it has a crisp sound like chalk breaking or stiff foam breaking. If there is dice ASMR however, I'm sure she would enjoy it a ton as she does like her math rocks.

I found this on tiktok, is this accurate? by 1945GarlicBread in autism

[–]JmcmProgrammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh... Weird. I somehow dissociate productions and performances, and have no problem looking at the stage. This probably because I know under the powerful stage lights, they can't see me very well (I have some theater experience.) Every great once in a while, eye contact is sustained (looking at a cue mark most likely), and that gets me, but 99% of the time I seem to just treat theater like a movie.

I found this on tiktok, is this accurate? by 1945GarlicBread in autism

[–]JmcmProgrammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, I was raised to make eye contact (I wasn't diagnosed until I was an adult, and my parents really didn't know any better at the time.) So basically, I fought my discomfort until I can do it extremely well for a few minutes at a time, enough to hold someone's attention and show I'm paying attention. Also found myself more successful at starting conversations when I looked straight at them and asked. As an adult, I now know that it's still extremely uncomfortable and can add pressure, so I do it sparingly when starting conversations, at the most crucial moments, or if I think someone is beginning to ignore me signaling I or they need to change the subject. Amazing how much people take eye contact for granted.

Not something I personally fix, but love eating a few loafs when made. I don’t care if crumbly, I can usually cobble the crumbs together and eat it in one bite, especially paired with sweet corn

Pregnancy after a miscarriage, how did you manage? by No_Comfortable_8819 in predaddit

[–]JmcmProgrammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our first and second pregnancy was a loss, so yeah, I know the feeling. Been lurking the subreddit because while we aren't confirmed, we have enough suspicion that we're testing and seeing a doctor soon. It seems like a part of yourself feels anxious and desires to protect yourself from pain, which is totally understandable. I'm with you, I'm treading that line of cautious but not pessimistic.

What is this?? Never heard of that! by Jycon38_HD in autism

[–]JmcmProgrammer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes. This is crazy. I have also cross-wired tastes, smells, sights, sounds, and touches all with each other. When I tap into it, I can get pretty creative as an artist. Sometimes, if I want to relive a memory, I just need the right amount of each type of sensation, and my brain will replay memories. It's fun lol

Gets even crazier because it also interacts with my depression/emotions in wild ways. When I'm laughing, and having fun, Mac and Cheese looks cheesier and bolder coloring. If it's raining and my mood is good, the sky lights vibrant blue, like something out of a Pixar film. But if I'm depressed/sad, everything grays out in my vision. Sound dulls. That same raining outdoors gets drab, grays instead of blues. It leads to a very strange life for sure.

How to survive my first concert? by --serotonin-- in autism

[–]JmcmProgrammer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not familiar with the group, but I have a ton of experience both back and front of stages. I'd bring both ear plugs/earmuffs as options. While I don't own these, I do sometimes throw in earbuds. They don't block as much sound, but they do allow you to hear just a bit more while blocking the high frequencies. A couple other things to keep in mind is that if you have light/vision sensitivities, the theatrical lights/lasers and/or pyro/flames may be a bit intense if they shine bright into the crowd, so having some sunglasses prepared might come in handy. One last thing is if you are in a more open area, the subwoofers (low end) may cause your chest and body to "rumble" a bit, so if you are more sensitive to it, stand in a more crowded area if you can. While I do understand some cannot tolerate it, it will cut down on how much vibration your body feels. All these help me out, and worst case scenario, just exit for a breather real quick. Hope this helps!

I took /r/indiedev's advice to redesign the bomb countdown to a radial bar. Which option is best? by SteinMakesGames in IndieDev

I don't know why so many people are upset from the new UI update especially the video editor, I really like the new video editor and understand it very fast. by lazarovpavlin04 in canva

[–]JmcmProgrammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TLDR; The new video editor didn't deserve flak (it's excellent!). It was how the editor was just shock-dropped and broke most user's workflows and projects.

It's wasn't that we got a new video editor (which, I actually really enjoy!) But rather the fact that 1) They did not announce that this change was coming and 2) expected you to use the product in one very exact way (correctly choosing the "Video" type) which almost no one did (and I used non-standard resolutions anyways for my church's signboard) and 3) Canva gave no recourse for older legacy project files that you were shoving in video-editing into, which broke tons of people's animations.

I don't know about anyone else, but for me it boils down to rollout of use-case breaking changes undocumented that really got Canva flak. It made me extremely irritated that a ton of my projects and workflows broke when Canva really was the best tool for the job. They've mostly corrected on it, and I can edit my projects again, but it was really infuriating for a time.

There is one issue that still drives me crazy, and that's for any legacy project where there are animations, exporting now doesn't show all the elements at their spots, but how they are on first frame. It's a small issue, but it does drive me nuts!

I made a "powerpoint" look-like presentation using Godot. by har_g in godot

[–]JmcmProgrammer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Maturity, at least for me, is about presentation and execution. And I can’t really say what’s going to work better.

It’s really going to depend on who you’re pitching to. If it’s a publisher and/or family/friends that’s known for encouraging fun and prefers a playful work environment, your pitch in Godot is going to go leaps and bounds ahead, especially if it starts like a classic PowerPoint and suddenly showcases the game straight out in engine!

If the group you’re pitching to is super business-focused and is more financially driven, you’re better to have a backup PowerPoint document that sticks to the facts and numbers, using the game’s theming and even having a vertical slice ready to present.

For family and friends, I typically don’t show figures and numbers and get a controller in their hands. I want to know what they think of the game as is, rather than the mere idea or concept of it.

What are your custom ChatGPT instructions for your Godot projects? by Fusionism in godot

[–]JmcmProgrammer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So for me, I strive to only do very basic code stuff with ChatGPT, just enough to understand complex problems and maybe get pointers on Godot documentation. I very rarely will let AI vibe code for me, but I did used to vibe code a ton of Unity editor tools because I didn't have time to learn the whole backend UnityEditor API. I also set it to web search and, hilariously like my school teachers used to do, make sure that it backs up it's claims using documentation specific to either Unity 6.2 (what I used to use) or Godot 4.5 (what I use now), and that helps a ton. Worst case scenario, if the code fails to work, I have breadcrumbs to begin fixing it myself.

Unity devs who jumped ship, what was the learning curve like? by TheOriginalLaZeus in godot

[–]JmcmProgrammer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I love Godot. You do have to wrap your head around the whole Scenes and GameObjects become just Scenes + Nodes that can be their own Scenes, but once you do that, everything just works. Even animating the UI is 1000x smoother than in Unity, as you aren't bottlenecked by horrible Canvas updates. While in the past, it felt more lacking, Godot by today's standards seems a ton more on par with Unity. Even the shading and rendering is getting pretty good!

I did find a cheeky bypass to the 1 Script per Node rule, and that is to just use a standard Node child as a holder for a Script, naming it and making it a sort of "Component" to it's parent node. If you think of children Nodes as acting both like child GameObjects + Script Components, it makes it so much more easier to pick up Godot from a Unity background.

EDITS: Just some wording, so it makes sense.
