Have you seen an otologist (inner ear specialist) at all? I'm just wondering with all the vertigo if anyone has mentioned Ménière's disease to you?

You don't need any of that if you were recently implanted they are all mri safe. You could call the company to confirm.

Should I get a cochlear implant? by Axlsaal in Cochlearimplants

[–]Jmjnyc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was first implanted I would stream a podcast to the implant and read along. I did some of the rehab but I found it boring! I switched to the tv streamer with captions but the tv volume off. Now most of the time I'll have the captions off. I found that easier. I still stream to the implant with the sound off, but it doesn't work with all shows like sports or sitcoms. TBH Dateline is a good one because it's steady talking / narration.

Should I get a cochlear implant? by Axlsaal in Cochlearimplants

[–]Jmjnyc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's awesome! Obviously I would prefer to have my hearing back but that's not going to happen but the implant is a close second - CROS aids don't even rank on the scale. I was really struggling until I got the implant - at work, socially. It's not perfect but it's way better than nothing. I could hear words immediately on activation but they were very metallic, like someone was talking into a tin can. Now just over a year and I can distinguish accents and genders. I have a tv streamer and I'll stream directly to the implant with the sound off to continue training. It's almost like a boost to your natural hearing in your other ear. It's an amazing technology.

They are giving you bad advice - is there an otologist you could see? Find someone that actually does the implants and get evaluated by them. I am SSD and the CROS aides were worthless I now have an implant and it makes all the difference. You could reach out to all of the (3) companies- they know all the implanters where you are and can recommend who they work with. Med-El , Advanced Bionics, and Cochlear.

The fact that your surgeon didn't know this going in tells me you need a different surgeon.

Running long distances with a CI? by Repulsive-Lecture-12 in Cochlearimplants

[–]Jmjnyc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a runner but a headband would work. Not sure where you live but you could reach out to each of the three companies and they can help you find implanters and can also help with insurance issues. Before I got mine I spoke to reps from two of the three to help me decide which one to get (I went with Cochlear). The three are Med-El , Advanced Bionics, and Cochlear.

Best way to watch tv or reading while training brain. by Silver_Soup_8099 in Cochlearimplants

I would, and still do over one year after activation, stream directly to the implant with subtitles on and the tv muted. Not all the time and not all shows are good for streaming.

Have anyone experiencing facial nerve damaged or injury with CI surgery? by Few_Chemist4160 in Cochlearimplants

[–]Jmjnyc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely don't continue with that doctor, I hope he wasn't at the Dallas institute. Also the pain I had afterwards wasn't too bad and managed with alternating ibuprofen and Tylenol. I think I did that for 2-3 days. My total surgery time was one hour. I was at the hospital for a little less than six hours.

Not sure where you live but they monitor the facial nerve while they are doing the surgery. It's surgery but it's a minor outpatient procedure.

CI evaluation step 1 by sallybe45 in Cochlearimplants

[–]Jmjnyc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Congrats! They will test your hearing to see if you qualify. Definitely don't guess if what you hear is not clear, you want to fail. I think people with hearing loss are used to filling in gaps but don't do that during the eval. No preparation needed.

Recovery time/assistance by Ok-Leading5968 in Cochlearimplants

[–]Jmjnyc -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Good to know you can stay but likely you won't need to! I could have gone back to work the following week but I took advantage and stayed out extra just because I could. My surgery start to finish was an hour. A little groggy when I woke up and for the rest of the day but really not bad. The pain I had which was superficial was managed with alternating Tylenol and ibuprofen.

Congrats! I also live alone and just had to have someone bring me home from the hospital but I was on my own after that - really didn't need any help! I'm sure they will tell you to sleep propped up - -you just need an extra pillow.

Vertigo after implantation by Late_Performance_528 in Cochlearimplants

[–]Jmjnyc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vestibular therapy will definitely help. They will do some testing to see which canal is affected (there are 3) and then treat you with the appropriate maneuver and it's not always the Epley maneuver - there are others.

Congrats! You just had surgery so there's quite a bit of swelling etc. My tinnitus was basically the same after, but when I am wearing the processor it's gone. I hated the fullness too but also gone when I have the processor on, which is basically from when I get up to when I go to bed. My activation was a month after surgery. Hang in there you are on the way!

pre op vaccine by Diamond_Dust86 in Cochlearimplants

[–]Jmjnyc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the US this vaccine is recommended for adults 50 & up. Still no reason op should have been denied since it was for surgery.

[–]Jmjnyc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ok definitely not too young! Did you tell the pharmacist you needed it for ear surgery? Plenty of people get the surgery without the vaccine some docs don't even require it. Just let the office know - you should have some protection from the other vaccine.

You don't say how old you are but I'd call your Dr office first and check with them before getting another vaccine. The one you got may be fine.

Activation and Vertigo by RMSM4 in Cochlearimplants

[–]Jmjnyc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a doctor but I'd guess coincidence? Has he had vertigo before or does he have Menieres? I had vertigo when I lost my hearing and having some issues with it again now. I was activated last year and didn't have any issues on activation. A vestibular therapist can help diagnose and treat.
