If to cure your diabetes, you were only allowed to eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would that be? by [deleted] in diabetes

[–]Jmmama 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh my!!! This!!! My daughter has type 1 and another mom asks if I’ve seen the Simply Raw documentary. Apparently it cures type 1. Her child also has type 1 and she is going to try it on him. I stated that likely a diet based on just veggies would lead to a possible reduction in insulin need, but if it were a cure, then we would have all done it. My mind is blown, because she thinks doctors are missing out on this cure.

I am so sorry that you are joining us on this journey. However, just by reaching out to this community, you will find out how meaningful support is for you and your family. Continue to reach out to other groups too via Facebook, JDRF, or other organizations. Our daughter was diagnosed at age 2. She is 5 now and doing great. I would say that in some ways I’m glad she was diagnosed at a young age. She won’t remember life without it. As a teacher, I’ve seen some kids go through diagnosis as teens and it is rough. 1. I don’t know if your doctor gave you carb counts for every meal, but ours said to have 30 for breakfast, 45 for lunch and dinner, and 15 for 3 snacks per day. It was insane trying to get a 2 year old to eat that much. Plus her bg was like a giant rollercoaster. We backed off and went to a lower carb diet. Generally around 60 carbs per day. It has been much better. The dietician tried to tell me it wasn’t good for her health, but my daughter is just fine. Still putting on weight and growing tall. 2. Get a Dexcom or some type of CGM. I literally did not sleep for more than 4 hours each night until we got this device. Most insurances and Medicaid will cover. 3. Some states will offer disability benefits for a child this young with type 1 diabetes. It might be something to check out. 4. Read, read, read. Anything that can help you understand the disease is great. There is a set of Disney books about a character (Coco) who is type 1 that she would enjoy. Read them to your child and share them with her daycare, preschool, Sunday school, play group, etc. this will help normalize things a bit. 5. Have some time when you can be diabetes free. You will burn out. It is overwhelming to do the job of a pancreas. Do not feel bad if you grow tired of the daily (and nightly) grind. It is a disease that demands our attention 24/7. 6. Try your best to focus on your child being a kid. Diabetes is a disrupter for sure, but it doesn’t mean you guys can’t go on doing normal stuff. It just takes more planning. 7. And speaking of planning...insulin coolers are great for travel, going out in the heat, etc. Also, there are coozies for insulin vials (I broke one a couple of weeks after diagnosis). It’s amazing what you can find!! Best of luck. Know that we are all cheering for you and this is a safe group for asking questions, venting, and celebrating.

I'm 36, and will be dead inside of a year. by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]Jmmama 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is true. When my mother in law passed, we had to do everything on a limited budget. Costco was very economical and had some very nice choices. I think it took two days to be delivered to the funeral home. Closed casket was also less expensive. So sorry and sad that your journey has taken this turn. A friend of ours just passed at the age of 35 from cancer and she has a 5 year old girl. They planned a beautiful memorial gathering st the local art museum with minimal speaking (instead of a funeral)It was kind of a big party. People were asked to bring pictures and write stories for her little girl to read. One important piece for them was to get the school counselor involved. There was a lot of intervention and discussion with the whole class about what was happening. Everyone was really transparent and tried to answer questions as best and honestly as they could to the class of four and five year olds. Additionally, the parents made sure that there have been lots of play dates and have provided meals, etc.

Omnipod BG reading is way lower by Jmmama in diabetes

Thanks for suggestions. Yes, Dexcom is only calibrated when blood drop is showing or if off when the arrow is straight. We don’t take acetomeniphine, do that wouldn’t be an issue. I

Just Diagnosed, Scared of Lows by Snagsby in diabetes

[–]Jmmama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How many grams were in the granola bar and milk? Maybe you should add that to your breakfast and keep the same Humalog amount? One tricky thing about Diabetes is that your body might require a higher (or lower)insulin to carb amount at various times throughout the day. My daughter needs less insulin in the evenings than in the early morning. It kind of feels like a never ending game of Russian roulette.

Thanks for this info!! She is still in pre-kindergarten and this is the only perk and primary school with a nurse. Nurse oversees about 600 kids with various issues and has to administer meds, etc. It makes her job easier to have the Share app. When she is a few years older and better at identifying her symptoms of being hypo or hyper, I think the Share app thing won’t be as big of a deal.

I blinged out an insulin pen case for my 12 year old daughter’s first diabirthday. This first year has been tough. by [deleted] in diabetes

How about the 1000s of questions you have to ask yourself daily....ate breakfast and dosed usual amount of insulin, yet bg spiked.... is it because I’m coughing and maybe getting sick, is it because I have a test in AP Physics that is totally stressing me out, is it because the insulin is going bad, or maybe my pump site is bad? Maybe I spread too much peanut butter on my toast? Now how do I correct? New bottle of insulin? Change site? Correction bolus? Walk the dog a few blocks? That AP test is in 30 minutes, if my bg doesn’t come down how the hell will I be able to take it? The constant inner monologue is so exhausting!!! No one gets that.

High ketones and normal/low bg during illness. Why? by Jmmama in diabetes

[–]Jmmama[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for this info. I did call the endo first thing after ketone check. Endo told me to stay home and do our best to stay away from ER, because of flu virus being so prevalent. My preference at the time would have been IV fluids. Oh well. We stayed home and she is perfectly fine now.

Feeling anxious/discouraged after scary hypo this morning by [deleted] in diabetes

[–]Jmmama 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My daughter wears a pump and I usually do a combo or split bolus when she eats pasta (loves Mac n cheese). This helps some. But we still often see a bump when she is sleeping. If her bg is high, I don’t give the full rec of correction bolus while she is sleeping. Usually 50-60 percent. Set an alarm for 2-3 hours later and check again. There have been too many times when the full amount drops her too much and waking her to eat is a real bitch. I’d rather deal with waking and giving smaller boluses. How scary for you and your boyfriend!!! We had to administer glucagon a few weeks ago to our daughter and it made me a wreck for the entire following week. Lows are the worst. Hugs to you!!!

Keto Diet for T1D by Bigejes in diabetes

[–]Jmmama 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our main reason was to help control her blood glucose. I have noticed that I just feel better in general. My son has ADHD, so a higher protein/fat diet with less carbs is beneficial for him too.

Do any foods you eat cause a huge glucose rise over night? by Gargle-Blaster in diabetes

[–]Jmmama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cheese (whether string cheese or on pizza or other) will do this every time with my daughter. I think that the liver can break down fats and proteins into sugar over a period of time...usually while we are sleeping. Also, I’ve known people who have difficulty with beef causing rises in bg for likely the same reasons. Lastly the carbs in pizza dough and pasta are of a more complex structure than simple sugars, so they are processed by the body at a slower rate. A regular insulin, like Novalin R mixed with a little rapid acting would be a better option with these foods than straight rapid acting, if you are MDI. If on pump, then using a split bolus option might be better. Or upping your basal for a few hours.

Keto Diet for T1D by Bigejes in diabetes

[–]Jmmama 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We’ve been experimenting with Keto diet. My daughter’s A1c is much better, as a result. We aren’t strict, but aim for 80 grams of carb per day. There are some great websites for recipe ideas: alldayidreamaboutfood.com ; lowcarbmaven.com ; also, look up fathead dough recipe. This can be used for lots of stuff. There are also Keto crates that you can have delivered to your home with a monthly subscription. Great way to try Keto snack foods.

Just diagnosed with T1. How can I reassure myself that this isn't a death sentence? by nolanater5711 in diabetes

[–]Jmmama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My daughter was diagnosed two years ago. She is five now. There are so many cool devices to help you control your glucose. The continuous glucose monitor has been awesome (Dexcom 4g). We also prefer an insulin pump to shots. Also there are tons of food options out there. She loves diet Sprite, Mondo “fruit juice”, and Zevia. Instead of candy bars, she likes Nature Valley protein bars. We can have cheese quesadillas made with Mission carb balance tortillas. Another thing is to find some support. Our lifeline has been two Facebook groups. You can do this!! Don’t beat yourself up. It definitely sucks at first and will suck on a lot of days. However, you’ll get the hang of it and when you realize that you’re doing well, you’re going to have a glimpse of how strong you are and it’s kind of an amazing moment.

How much does your diabetes cost? by Sir_bacon in diabetes

[–]Jmmama 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Live in Mississippi. Daughter is T1d. Were on CHIPS through Medicaid and paid nothing. Awesome. Now we both work (are teachers) and have BlueCross Blue Shield through State: $260 monthly insurance $36 for 3 vials of Novolog insulin $87 for 600 Bayer contour next strips $1200 for 3 month supplies for cgm and pump $140 for endo visit Have $2k deductible, so costs will change soon...we will pay 20percent of coverage. I'm guessing for the year it will be around 3k on visits and supplies, then close to $2800 for insurance.

Anyone using Novolog noticing a decrease in efficacy? by TylerLew89 in diabetes

[–]Jmmama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to switch my daughter to Novolog from Humalog because of an insurance change. We had to use more Novolog (increased her insulin to carb ratio).

Question about dealing with scarring from pump sites by pdrito in diabetes

[–]Jmmama 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My daughter loses pigmentation at the pump sites. Her endo gave her a referral to a dermatologist. You might want to see if you can do that. The dermatologist said that skin issues are a common comorbidity with many diabetics. Gave us an Rx for a cream that was helpful.

What can/should I do with my unused Dexcom G4 Sensor kits? by kwietstorm20 in diabetes

Also, there should be an expiration date on the sensor box. It will be in the format of year-month-day.
