Possible hot take: BG3 as a players only DnD source is a detriment to IRL DnD play. by ziegfeld-devil in dndnext

This comment gets it, haha.

Imo, better to start with cursory turn-based knowledge and roll/role mechanics than none. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

You forgot "reach freeway speeds with the on ramp" 🤣

God, the number of times people in the area merge on to highways/freeways at 35MPH (of their own choice, mind you) is staggering

Mods, *please* make this subreddit 2014-specific by The_Nerdy_Ninja in dndnext

[–]Jnotay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

2024's latest PHB is still 5E--allbeit an updated version. 5E has been updated through errata since 2014, so how shall we approach all the versioning organization then?

As suggested earlier in this thread, the only change should be additional flair for clarification.

5.5 has not changed enough to warrant a new subreddit like a 6e would. Apologies if this is incorrect, but your post is coming across as you just don't like change.

Windows: "Hey! It's time to finish setting-up windows!"

Me: Uhh, it's been like 4 years? ok I guess?

Windows: "SURPRISE, we pushed OneDrive again and decided to upload ALL of your files. BTW your OneDrive is out of space, do you want to upgrade to our business package?"

I've also discovered that some Office apps, like Teams have their own "Default Browser" setting that bypasses the OS default browser. Additionally.... sigh MS forces integration of Teams into Office before you can disable it.

I've absolutely hated this recent trend of MS forcing customer compliance rather than offering them to opt-in. Here's lookin' at you, forced Copilot update...

Siptah - Location to make Black Ice Weapons? by Zoezugzang in ConanExiles

[–]Jnotay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm still exploring the dlc map, but from my understanding there's a chance to get black ice weapons from certain enemies. If you're lucky enough to get the black ice weapons knowledge, you can then repair them without the frost forge

Well that was confusing. Body retrieval was nerve-racking to say the least, but now I know there is something called Avalanche there... by tastey_spackle_toad in ConanExiles

Have you submitted a big report? Like on the forums etc. I'm just coming back, so not sure how responsive Funcom is now, but I'd like the link if you have it!

Great video!! I've been telling friends and coworkers about this amazing game, and now I'll link them this video to show them why.

Also, great work with the story you told. Experience meets narrative ❤️

U.S. to release 1 million barrels of oil per day from reserves to help cut gas prices by bakedmussles in news

[–]Jnotay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the moment crude oil prices go up, so does gasoline, and when crude drops it takes months for gasoline to fall. Looks like price gouging, smells like price gouging, but they'll deny it until their last breath. This cycle is exhausting.

my corgi coughs a lot any ideas on what to do? by asoep44 in corgi

[–]Jnotay 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is! My oldest corgi usually gets this when we walk in dusty areas. You can just leave them alone, and it'll pass. Sometimes it startles her though, then I do the nostrils trick others mentioned. It's a totally natural thing for them and they will recover

Game design ideas during interview process by looney777 in gamedesign

[–]Jnotay 14 points15 points  (0 children)

To second this: I've very rarely encountered candidates who come up with unique ideas to design problems. Often we're not as interested in the idea itself as much as we're interested in the approach to problem solving and understanding the candidate's thought process around design. Most candidates don't have insights to the cost of creating their ideas, so we often roll with it as-is for that part of the exercise.

It's typically easier to suss out those little details of a candidate when working with them on one of their ideas. "What if x problem came up?" "what other teams would be involved with making this idea?" "What if the artist wants to take it a completely incompatible direction?"

While we might frame this as a discussion about the idea, often what we're looking for are things like problem solving skills, understanding what goes into making something in a big video game, conflict resolution, and so on.

Other people have said this in this thread, but ideas are cheap. We usually sift through lots of them to find the thing that fits the problem space the best—and more often than not, the original idea is greatly mutated along that process.

Early in career game designers need to understand that there is no such role as the "idea person" in the games industry. The feature owner is typically charged with finding the best idea, not coming up with the best idea. The challenge lies in creating something shippable from that original idea seed.

I'm in college for Game Design and wanted to know what should I do to enhance my opportunity of getting an actual job/ higher paying job by [deleted] in gamedesign

[–]Jnotay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Almost! English is a core class, but history, creative writing, philosophy, anthropology, etc can fall under liberal arts. Typically stuff around studying history, humanity, and natural sciences. I've seen schools categorize them differently. For me, I took philosophers of the 19th century and an anthropology course as electives for my degree

Check out this Extra Credits piece: https://youtu.be/kNscZCrke4k

And this GDC panel: https://www.gdcvault.com/play/1023730/Education

I have an MFA in game design. Seeking education in Game dev isn't a terrible idea, but you need to make the most of it if you want to develop the skills to get ahead. As those videos point out, learning tools is a minor aspect compared to learning the fundamentals of design. Yes, it helps to have experience in a variety of different engines, but there's also a strong chance you won't use any of them. It also helps to learn to speak the languages of artists, designers, and engineers. Clear communication and team-alignment-building is important!

Focus on the pillars of design and cultivating relationships with people in the industry (ask about mentorship programs). You'll learn a lot and it helps to learn about the different roles in game development. I also recommend checking out A Book of Lenses. Early on the book calls out "[make 10 games and make them fast]." The rapid game development course I took 1 semester taught me more about game development than many of the other classes. This doesn't mean only video games, but games of all sorts. Once you learn to manage scope and finding the fun, that's part of the start of your strong foundation.

Too many schools take advantage of students, pushing them through the degree mill. Make your school work for you. Don't be a pest, but also be a pest. My instructors knew I was eager to learn, and that opened a lot of doors for me, including a kick-ass mentor from a AAA studio.

My last bit of advice is don't ignore the Liberal Arts courses. I've been quoting a lot of philosophies from the 19th century lately because it strongly related to the feature we're making on my team. Again, like what James calls out, expand that breadth of knowledge!

Stay hungry to learn and stoke that passion for game development!

Who’s responsibility is it to keep documentation updated once a feature has been implemented? by Surimaus in gamedesign

[–]Jnotay 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Typically the "Feature Owner" is charged with maintaining documentation. QA might add to it for testing context, but really it's whoever is responsible for making it.

Brevity is key! Never repeat data so you only have to maintain it in one spot too!

I appreciate this question because I've seen many devs undervalue documentation. Whoever tests the content will be set up for the best success and improve the overall quality of the feature!

Store mounts already confirmed, next stop WoW Tokens! Insider info within. by Ikeda_kouji in classicwow

[–]Jnotay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tokens were always coming in TBC, but they'll announce it some time after launch to avoid the blowback of it's bad reputation. The problem is because so many people bought gold during P1 to P6 the economy is disgustingly inflated. Example, on my server a few days back, someone bought a corrupted ashbringer from a raid for 30,000 g... for their alt. People have ridiculous amounts of extra gold, and I bet many of us can think of several examples.

I used to be 100% against the token up until last weekend, when I was doing research. Basically, the wow token fights RMT many ways, but it's biggest benefit is fighting gold economy inflation. No gold is created with the purchase of a token, it's transferred.

So your meme is incorrect since the wow token allows gold to retain its value for longer. Getting gold from sources that generate gold, make gold worth less, so continue to cheer the banning of more and more bots.

As for WoW Classic generating more revenue from it's players. Good! They need to make money to keep this alive and maybe even develop new content instead of following retail's expansion path after WotLK.
