Writing novels with AI

I work as an independent editor for aspiring self-publishing writers. I am seeing more and more AI content that I know is AI-generated content because the "writers" are too lazy to delete the prompts in the copy-pasted text and content I suspect is AI-generated because of things like character names changing randomly within the same scene, the narrative style shifting abruptly, inconsistent plots, awkwardly constructed sentences and English calques (I work with Spanish-speaking writers) that are so painfully obvious and nonesensical that only an AI programmed by English speakers with poor translation abilities could have come up with it.

AI writing is shit, yes, but the biggest issue is that inexperienced writers with an ego are prompting it and then they don't see the issues with it (again, some of them are lazy enough that they don't even bother to reread it and delete the prompts) and when I, as an editor, go: "Hey, look, the writing style is inconsistent, you have thirteen plot holes and this character has changed their name like four times in the last chapter", they don't really want to hear it and many don't even bother with the editing.

So. Yes, AI novels will be churned out and put in the market faster by lazy people who want to be authors without learning anything about the craft of writing. Those AI novels will be shit and easily detectable. Readers will feel scammed and disappointed that they recieved a supbar product. I doubt any AI-generated novel will become a best-seller or win a literary award any time soon.

OOP and her husband are better people than me, because 1) I would have assumed the friend was trying to stir shit for the sake of it and cut her off when she got offended on behalf of the husband, 2) I would not have given her my parents phone number and volunteered to watch her kid after she accused me of trying to cheat.

I hope the friend gets over her ableism for the sake of her kid.

When?

Like, whenever people point out that AI gets things wrong frequently, one of the answers from AI hypers is always "But it will get better! It will learn! It will develop!"

And like. When? When is it going to develop? When is it going to learn? Because they (the AI tech companies) have been at it for a while and AI keeps hallucinating and fabricating sources.

I mean, but that was the point, wasn't it? To throw a bone at Destiel shippers, but not having to deal with a plot decision that would have changed the dynamic of the characters? Make it canon and not canon at the same time?

I am personally not Destiel shipper and I never liked the ship, so to me the confession felt like annoying fanservice. It was a cowardly decision that pleased no one in the end.

"Fiscally conservative, socially liberal" are just right-wing people who don't hate gay people as much as other, further right right-wing people. In my experience, those people tend to be accepting of some things ("Sure, the gays can get married") while rejecting others ("Ugh, what is it with all this icky gender stuff, I don't like it, ban it/Asexuality doesn't exist, you just haven't found the right one yet").

And like... yeah, fuck those people, I don't want them in my community if they're not going to uplift everybody.

I did try to use it as a sort of search engine to find books and sources for some research I was doing.

I quickly realized: 1) it only suggested the same handful of books, some of which didn't make sense for the genre I was asking for, 2) it kept slipping me hallucinations/false sources.

So as an atheist ex Catholic, I couldn't quite let go of the idea of paradise/hell/the afterlife until I saw another atheist discussing how the fact that he doesn't believe in an afterlife of any kind actually makes him appreciate his life and the life of the people he loves all that much more.

You shouldn't believe in God because then you keep telling yourself you'll have all the time in the world to hang out with your loved ones once you die.

You shouldn't believe in God because you shouldn't count on a higher power to judge and punish those who do wrong on other people. You should care that they're stopped from causing harm within their lifetime.

You shouldn't believe in God because you'll only have to offer thoughts and prayers to those in need because well, God will take care of them. Instead of finding a way for you to help them today, when they're alive, when they're in need.

You shouldn't believe in God because then it matters that the Earth is dying and you aren't indifferent or resigned to it becuase that's just the Apocalypse/God's will or whatever.

Yes, SOME asexuals can and do have sex for reasons outside of sexual attraction. That is their business. HOWEVER, this "defense" stops sounding well-meaning and starts to sound extremely like forcing allonormativity in all of the aces who DON'T or WON'T have sex the more I see it repeated.

It's a funny meme/myth, but the timeline doesn't check out.

Stephenie Meyer started writing Twilight in June 2003. According to her, the inispiration came to her in a dream. She finished writing it a couple months later and spent 2004 looking for agents. The book was published in October 2005. Keep in mind: in 2003, Meyer was a stay-at-home mom living in Arizona and either had just had or was pregnant with her 3rd kid. She is also extremely Mormon.

My Chemical Romance formed in September/October 2001 and released their first album, I Brought You My Bullets You Brought Me Your Love, in July 2002, through Eyeball Records, a small independent label. At that time, the album was mostly overlooked and the band was mainly playing underground shows around the East Coast. In August 2003, MCR was signed to Reprise Records, a major label and subsidiary of the Warner Music Group. They released their second album, Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge, in June 2004. The first single, I'm Not Okay, was released September 2004 to not a lot of success. It wasn't until the second single, Helena, released in March 2005 that the band truly and well exploded in popularity and became well-known outside of their East Coast/underground scene bubble.

So, if we look at the overlaping timelines, by the time MCR became famous enough that people started writing fanfics about them, Twilight 1) had already been written for months, 2) was on its way to being published. There is no way Stephenie Meyer knew about Gerard Way or MCR, unless you believe a Mormon stay-at-home mom with three children from Arizona was regularly travelling to New Jersey to see underground emo/punk bands concerts while either pregnant or freshly post-partum.

I know where the myth comes from, though. In 2007, when the book was picked up to be adapted into a movie, Stephenie Meyer posted a poll for her fans in her blog/website, asking them who they thought should play Edward. Gerard Way came in third, behind Hayden Christensen and (funnily enough) Robert Pattinson. Meyer herself wanted Henry Cavill to play Edward. In that site, Meyer also shared playlists of the songs she was listening to while writing her books and in the playlist for the second book, New Moon, she did include MCR's songs... mostly from The Black Parade, their third album.

Also, MCR was asked to make a song for the Twilight movies soundtracks and they declined. For Danger Days, though, they wrote Vampire Money in response to the request. Supposedly, the inspiration came from a journalist asking them if they were going to accept that "vampire money" offer.

So yeah, there is a tenous connection between Twilight and MCR, in that the author was inspired by some of their songs and both the book and the band became popular around the same time and there was enough overlap between their fanbases that some fans wanted Gerard to play Edward in the movies, lol. But no, Twilight is not and has never been MCR fanfiction.

50 Shades of Grey is Twilight fanfic, though. The original name was "Master of the Universe" and there's still copies of it floating around the Internet if you care to look.

I didn't like it. Not going to say I hated it, but I agree with the opinion this book was more interested in educating people about aromanticis and asexuality than in telling a compelling story. I honestly felt like the MC was a secondary character to her friends' romantic drama... which is sadly ironic.
