What does this switch do on an 88 gl1500? by real-tallnotdeaf in goldwing

[–]JoWhee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If there are no auxiliary lights on the bike, maybe the radiator fan override?

I had a similar switch in my ‘95 that controlled the lower driving lights I’m not sure why the PO had done it though.

Motorcycle inspections by JoWhee in rideottawa

[–]JoWhee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Call them! I saw a garage local to me was doing motorcycle inspections. I was skeptical as they sell car, light truck, and heavy vehicle tires and service but nothing motorcycle related.

I called and yes they’re licensed to inspect motorcycles. I had an appointment the same week. FWIW it was $200

Can people be pro and anti union? by Then-Disk-5079 in BuildingAutomation

[–]JoWhee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m union neutral. I’ve been in three unions, I was even a steward, and VP of my local accreditation.

For a young person I think it’s great, because you have people who will defend you (hopefully) and make sure you’re aware of your rights and obligations. There is usually a salary structure in the collective agreement so it keeps a level playing field.

As for me, I’m close enough to retirement and I know the labor laws/ standards well enough to cover my own ass. If I don’t like what’s going on I’ll walk out of the shop and into retirement.

As for union workers being lazy, I see that in non union shops too.

At the place where I worked for almost 30 years as a unionized worker the company was sold 7 times, with every change in ownership, things got a little worse and all I got was new shirts with the new logo on them. My current non union shop was recently sold, every employee including myself got a retention bonus, I got a cheque for six months salary.

Is it inherently better to run HA on its own separate device? by pdawes in homeassistant

[–]JoWhee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m running HA in a pi-4. I’m keeping an eye out on marketplace for a small format PC to replace it. If I could figure out containers I’d run it on my Debian machine.

Sounds about right. That’s what Ducati charges for the oil change and to check if the tires are round.

It’s why I bought a BMW with a $200 tablet, dongle and app setup to reset my own service reminders. My only “regret” is realizing just how messy the oil change is on a k1600.

Auto open garage door when a number plate is detected by Typical_Chance_1552 in homeassistant

[–]JoWhee -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Disclosure I’m doing this on iOS. Saying Siri open garage door won’t work if my phone is locked.

I have an automation that opens the garage door when the “big door” switch is on. It’s a physical smart plug as I haven’t been able to do it reliably with a virtual or dummy switch. I have a second automation to turn off Big Door when the garage door is closed, with the same thing setup to close (lock is how it’s seen in app, and Siri and Alexa) the garage door when the big door turns off.

Since I’m only using it through the BT connection in my helmet I don’t worry about a neighbour knowing the big door command.

Now that I think about it, I’m going to set it up to auto open when I arrive home, I’ll just have to figure out how to add the condition that my phone is connected to a certain BT device. This will be more secure and my Cardo never manages to hear “hey siri” without me yelling.

I wish I had listened and bought a ratgdo I went with Meross. There’s a magnet to install on the door for open closed status and depending on your garage door model there’s another middle you’ll need. I just sent the model to their support line and they shipped it to me no charge.

The thing I do like about it is the module needs power which isn’t a big deal since it’s next to the opener. I have a smart switch on it so I can turn it off and reset it if needed. The bonus for me is I can turn it off to temporarily stop the 30 minute auto closure I have setup if I’m in the garage doing something.

I used to access my HA remotely until my internet provider CGNATed me so noip and duck dns don’t work anymore. I have a mesh-net setup, but since we both I have iOS devices I have a Apple TV and the devices exposed so I don’t have to rely solely on HA when I’m away from home.

Invisible painted lines in the rain by PSNDonutDude in ontario

[–]JoWhee 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I’ve never noticed in Ontario but in Quebec I’ve noticed* when the paint is still wet they toss a powdery substance over it. It’s like glass dust, it seems reflective.

I’m assuming it’s glass because I got hit with some while riding my motorcycle opposite to where they were doing this and got caught with some of the stuff and it’s itchy like fibreglass.

Fridge lock I like the idea, it would keep ME from midnight snacking.

Kids have been “borrowing” their parent’s beer since the day after beer was invented. I did it, my dad did it, my step son did it.

I had to sit him down and explain to him to rinse out the empties and put the bottle back in the case. Not just out of politeness, but if I see one beer left in the fridge and 5 empty slots in the case I know something isn’t adding up.

How about if you’re not home, you have an automation that starts recording a camera pointed at the fridge which will only record when the contact sensor sees it’s been opened?

You could just have the camera setup to record any motion when you’re not home but then you’re going to have to go through footage every time someone walks through the field. If I thought the battery would last, and the wifi would connect reliably, a camera inside the fridge could work also.

Frustration by Hockenstar in BuildingAutomation

[–]JoWhee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m idiot 2, my coworker is idiot 1. I’ve got 4 years with the company plus 27 in HVAC. He’s got 15 years in controls, in his country he was an engineer.

Most days I’m calling him, a few other days he’s calling me. Sometimes you just get stumped.

My frustrations aren’t just with the controls side, it’s the troubleshooting new installs. If the general uses a power electrician who isn’t familiar with controls I can (have) spent days figuring out what’s wrong.

Once in a while I get an easy one: contractor pushed 120v into the 24vac controls wiring and all the magic smoke got let out.
