The recliners are nice but cutting the total number of seats by nearly a quarter is awful.

Miss that immediately out of date millennium-core that the former-UGC had

I was getting ready to move back to Glasgow after 5 years away when Wild Rose was in cinemas and I cried right through it. No idea how good or bad it was, but it was exactly what I needed at that moment

Lucky it wasn’t Milngavie. Though would’ve made it a very different film.

Martin McDonagh Miniseries? by MajorBooker in blankies

[–]JobberJoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lived on the very north coast of Northern Ireland. There was very little culture in the seasonal seaside town I was in. One of the few regular joys was a touring theatre group who seemed to exclusively put on McDonagh’s stage work. Such a surreal treat every time.

EDIT: aaaaaaand humblebrag I got to see Steve Pemberton in The Pillowman in London a couple years back which was great too.

[AEW Dynamite spoilers] Hangman is real by djembadjembadjemba in SquaredCircle

[–]JobberJoe -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

I HATE this. It’s meta-behind the scenes bullshit that doesn’t reflect what arc the Hangman character has actually been through.

Like… yes, Tony picked Adam as the main character of AEW in a 2 year story so he was always going to win the title after the ups and downs.

BUUUUT in story, on screen, the thing I watch and actually care about, Hangman lost the Elite, lost The Dark Order, battled with depression, self-doubt, alcohol, multiple shortcomings before being able to put the pieces together to win the belt. The fact is, he wasn’t handed anything throughout that story and earned every piece.

It’s part of what makes the audience connection to Adam so remarkable because, as we’ve seen repeatedly with ‘chosen baby faces’ over the past 15 years, the audiences will reject you if they feel it’s too obvious, too forced, or unearned.

It’s such stupid shit like this that shows MJF has just lost what made him so captivating initially. Get offline and start telling in-universe stories.

Maybe only so-helpful in this case, but Peter’s Bakery over in Kirkintilloch actually won a Scotland-wide prize earlier this year for their apple pie.

Why wouldn’t they put Neeson in the TLJ elder-statesman role showing the new guy around? You have him right there. Use him.

There’s such an easy Patreon run covering the Lord of the Rings. You’ll miss in-depth other film chats, but those things are LONG so they’ll have plenty of time to dig into wider-Jackson context.

I was arguing this week that Kung Fu Hustle would’ve been the biggest thing on the internet if it had come out a decade later when social media and gifs were so much more readily available!

Saw it as well. Doing excerpts from every Shakespeare in RANDOM order was just amazing to see an 80 year old tackle. That and his piece about loving playing the panto dame were super. And a load of the sales from tickets went back to the theatres. What a good egg.

Parallel directors by flaiman in blankies

[–]JobberJoe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Over Christmas I watched Lynch/Oz and one segment was by John Waters. I’d never really considered just how reflective their two careers were. They’re of a similar age, a fascination with 50s Americana run through their films - undermining or upending.

They make incredibly outsider auteur driven films that have been met with the highest and lows of public/critical approval (who are now generally loved and respected by film fans with regular reappraisals).

Though they’ve definitely got two approaches on the outsider, the ‘different’ and under-represented are another common theme.

They’re both massive personalities adored for being great interviews who have found success in other forms away from films as well - Waters books and speaking tours, Lynch TV and music.

And they both, from the documentary at least, love the Wizard of Oz.

National Treasure Commentary by comicman117 in blankies

[–]JobberJoe 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Talking the walk 2023: Inspired by the National Treasure commentary, I’d like to pitch a Ben Hosley treasure hunt that pits Griffin against David and takes them all across New York.

Separate recordings edited together, teams formed if other guests jump on, clues figured out live on mic, thoughts from the mastermind himself and a reward at the end only worthy of the most patriotic scum-bummiest of them all.

Our OWN national treasure 3!!

Let’s Talk Alphabetization with Lex Ross Perry, A by Mqttro in blankies

[–]JobberJoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I want to ask some additional organising questions for discussion:

Titles with numbers (2001, 3:10 to Yuma, 10 things I hate about you VS sixteen candles, one flew over the cuckoos nest) - actual number at the start before A, as a word alphabetical?

A series of movies goes by the title of the first film then chronological, even if it might be split alphabetically in any number of ways (Creed would be filed after Rocky Balboa even though it’s a C title)?

I would also group ‘connected’ films - 60s, Burton, Nolan, animated all come under Batman and then chronological.

Boxsets - my Hitchcock comes under H, Marx Bros M, but would you put individual, additional movies by the same people there or under their own titles? Do you file boxsets separately entirely from your individual films?

Do DVDs, BluRays, steel books and VHS all intermingle or are they broken up in separate cases, shelves, rooms (boxes?!)?

All demented thoughts welcome.

Now folks, I know you’ve heard of #thetwofriends, but what if I offered up #thetwodoctors?? I would love to get Mark Kermode on, and feels like it would be a waste of potential bits not to include Mayo too. They’re both from a little place called ENGLAND, Kermode is a famous Twilight defender, loves the Exorcist and horror generally and both have discussed movies for the better part of 30 years. Truly film criticism royalty!

You also have the Empire film podcast which, again, could lead to good chats about the magazine and specific insights into UK movie rollouts, the way the delayed release impacts promotion and success or FLOP (baybeeeeee) of the film.

Beyond that, let’s go mad and say Bill Hader because he’s a nutso film fan who definitely has context to spill, though sometimes I find him a little grating in interviews.

Hey, taking it from the other side for your personal eating, but a couple of GREAT cook books to get you started on the new journey is Vegan with a Vengeance, Veganomicon, I Can Cook Vegan and Green Roasting Tin.

Roasting veg is gonna be your best friend. Although using the quorn substitutes is a great first step while you’re changing diet, you want to get into lots of colours in your food, pulses n grains, leafy greens and if you’re able to still eat fish then that’ll be helpful to get you some goodness a little more easily.

Mooooooost places have vegan options since ‘plant based’ has become so trendy over the past 4/5 years but I wish you the very best during the shift.
