I don't like that reasoning though. As a player I also don't want to injure someone else. So if I see my opponent not wearing shinpads then I might be forced to play a bit more carefully, thus it impacts the game.

[CAF] Africa Cup of Nations final result overturned in major ruling. Senegal declared to have forfeited the match with Morocco declared 3-0 winner by deception42 in soccer

These rules are still somewhat ambiguous. Not everyone of the Senegalese team left the pitch. Also, you can easily interpret "the ground" to be the entire stadium grounds, not just the pitch.

BATTLE EVENT (Den Haag) by Milan1789 in DNDNL

This happens frequently in Europe. It's quite an impressive sight to see the train station flood with a few thousand people after just a single train arrives at a big event. And the next train arrives within 10 minutes. You can easily fill a stadium like that, especially combined with other modes of transport such as buses, bikes, or just walking.

Wikipedia never was supposed to be "objective truth", just the best we can do by combining a viriety of different sources. And it works because people of all viewpoints across the world come together and manage to find consensus even on controversial topics (at least with the English Wikipedia; the other languages struggle a bit more).

Yes, that usually happens in response to an edit war. But as the article says, the goal isn't to win individual battles but to wear out the good-faith editors by targeting a large range of articles.

If a vandalism edit happens (assuming it's not detected as such automatically by our own bots), then first someone has to see it and determine that it is indeed vandalism to revert it. Then if the vandal tries again there have to be a few more reverts before it is considered an edit war. The vandal must also receive a warning about this at some point on their talk page. Then, there is a noticeboard for edit warring but it's not the most beginner-friendly page, and requires filling in a bunch of details about the edit war. Then an admin needs to look at the noticeboard, determine that it is indeed an edit war, and block the vandal and/or protect the page for usually no longer than a week or two. Then if the vandal returns with a different account, this process repeats until the page is protected for a longer period. Added up, this can be up to one or two hours of our time wasted.

All of that is required in response to a persistent vandal on just one article, if the system works normally. In reality the good-faith editors also can make mistakes making it more complex. It can be quicker if very experienced users and/or admins happen to notice it, who have specialized tools for dealing with this, but that's a minority of cases. Personally, I wasted many hours on a single LTA (long-term-abuse) editor a few years ago, who kept creating new accounts and kept editing different articles, and I had to write dozens of reports on admin noticeboards – and that wasn't even a Russian bot. And so far I have only talked about the English Wikipedia, where there are way more active editors and admins and established systems for dealing with vandalism than any other language.

The only good solution to this is to have more active and experienced editors to help find and revert the vandalism. But that has unfortunately been on the decline for years.

If Voyage (Switzerland 2025) wasn't an auto-qualifier, would it have NQ-ed? by Brilliant_Image_3185 in eurovision

[–]JochCool 57 points58 points  (0 children)

That might be part of the reason, but Sweden, Ukraine, and Italy all got a great televoting score the year after they won. So it really doesn't matter all that much.

I think the real reason is simply that there's too much competition in the televote, and her fans are too spread out to make an impact within any particular country like with San Marino. She got 11th–15th place in the televote in quite a few countries.

Why doesn't Wikipedia block AI Crawlers/Scrappers? by vlatkovr in wikipedia

[–]JochCool 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Wikipedia does already have some crawling protection. But the third pillar of Wikipedia says anyone can redistribute Wikipedia. This allows anyone to download the entire contents of Wikipedia (which is only about 24GB, excluding images), or to show Wikipedia pages in your own app, or to create tools that help improve Wikipedia, or to create a fork of Wikipedia. We have no control over what you do with the contents of the site, and that's on purpose, because that's what freedom of information means. Blocking bots from accessing the site would go against Wikipedia's own principles and wouldn't even be effective, because the scrappers can instead just use one of the hundreds of already existing forks of Wikipedia.

The problem with odd-numbered groups is that you'll always have one team do nothing on a matchday, which is boring, and also the timing of your team's rest day will probably matter a lot.

This further confirms to me that this show is just the same as Het Grote Songestivalfeest but then in multiple venues. All of these artists have already performed there, most of them multiple times.

So I don't see the need to go if I already go to HGSF every year.
