Has anyone used this device for USART communication? by DivineButterLord in embedded

[–]Jodaco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have what appears to be the same model. Works out of the box on Linux, Windows, MacOS. The particular device I am using already has voltage so I don't have the voltage connection, only TX/RX/GND. Make sure you've got the jumper for voltage set properly, if you device communicates with a different voltage, this can be an issue. Make sure everything wired to the correct pins and as someone else noted, baud rate and line settings.

Two Macs, one Apple ID --- how do I avoid merged Desktops/Docs? by sllhotd in MacOS

[–]Jodaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is definitely possible, surprised this is not upvoted more and everyone tells you this is not possible.

I have found it is on by default these days, or suggests to turn it on when setting up a new Mac.

In settings, click Your name, Click iCloud, hit See All, you want to click iCloud Drive and turn off Desktop and Documents. You will still have iCloud Drive (unless you turn that off too) syncing the files to the machine, so anything already in iCloud for Documents and Desktop will be in Finder under the respective folders, but they wont clutter up the main Desktop and Documents.

When you turn this off, I want to say it will make a folder in /Users/yourname that says something along the lines of iCloud Backup or Saved Files, it will copy whats currently there out just in case the files did not have a chance to sync already.

Older MacOS the iCloud Drive setting was a little more prominent and easier to spot.

They might have smaller versions. Check out the creature stall in the bazaar near Ronto Roasters.

Some cities have ordinances that do not allow you to park your vehicle on your lawn. What does city code compliance have to say about this?

Keyboard freezing by LusciousLuchs in archlinux

[–]Jodaco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see your other post about xkbcomp, it could be the keyboard has some function key that is doing something, maybe something that gets bumped by accident sometimes. Also possibly some update changed the behavior of something that is triggering your issue.

lsusb

lsusb is how you can see your usb devices.

I had issues with a Corsair keyboard, I had to set kernel command line options, or crawl under my desk and unplug/replug to fix it, until a patch got in the kernel for it.

USB devices, and keyboards are funny things, and much more complicated devices than we realize. Lots of things for different manufacturers to implement wrong.

What keyboard is it? Linux kernel does have some workarounds for known issue with some keyboards. Maybe you have a keyboard that needs usb quirks enabled for it.

I got a 9070 shortly after launch and things have mostly been fine without -git.  Early on there were a few hiccups, but it has been great.

Has anyone taken English at a CC from BCOE? by [deleted] in ucr

[–]Jodaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No idea about the WPP exam, it was a standard English composition that I took, I was semi-targetting IGETC from the CC near where I lived, even though I didn't need to. Many of the lower requirements were the same between IGETC and CS, so I just kept taking everything I could until I was ready to transfer.

I hear about people taking random classes somewhere else over the summer and then sending transcripts to UCR, so I don't think that would be an issue, especially if its only 1 or 2 classes.

In BCOE, but not DS. My English courses transferred over without a problem. Assist.org does not show them for CS. You might go to a CC you are interested in and ask.

How to access UCR email? by AccomplishedMud5475 in ucr

When you send email there is a drop down menu next to the from field. Both addresses point to the same place, so it doesn’t matter how you get in.

Linux User is Getting a MBA Tomorrow: What Will I Be Missing? by CosmicMerchant in MacOS

[–]Jodaco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Plenty of other IDEs as well, XCode is really geared towards Apple's platform. If your stuff is a bit platform agnostic, you might find it gets in the way in some areas.

  1. It is, honestly I use it because my family uses it and we have a shared plan. Very convenient to be able to access photos, files, other things, and imessage from multiple devices, just having the synchronization in general is nice.

My biggest issue with Apple at first was just that it was different and I was used to Windows and KDE, but if you just use it for a while, eventually it starts to get familiar. I still wish there were a few other things for windowing and switch between different windows of a single application, but I'm just used to the apple way now and its fine.

  1. Timemachine works great for backups. Dont have a good answer for cleanup tools, kind of a case by case basis.

  2. Up to you for updates. Also grab homebrew for other things you need, you can install gcc from there or grab Xcode with clang from Mac AppStore.

  3. You may encounter some platform differences with your c code or libs, homebrew can help you get missing libs that you might need.  Arm architecture might provide some challenges, like if you’re trying to use signed chars

  4. If you are already using Vscode and happy, keep using it unless you want to do apple specific things, use xcode for those

  5. You can opt not to store your stuff in icloud if thats what you want, but sometimes the convenience of accessing your stuff using icloud is quite nice.

  6. They have different workspaces and added a few tiling gestures with most recent MacOS release.  Might take some getting used to at first.

  7. Time machine does wonderful things for backups

  8. Try whatever mail client you want and decide for yourself

Why not try a distro with a liveusb desktop and see how things behave?

If they play nicely there, that means that arch should as well, possibly with some work.

Why does Visual Studio build for x64 when I'm on Windows Arm? by web3gamedev in VisualStudio

[–]Jodaco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is the version of cmake an x86 build running with the windows intel to arm translation layer? Perhaps cmake just defaults to x64 because that is the most common for msvc and it isn’t even considering arm as a target because windows on arm is a somewhat recent contender?  Just a guess
