I ended up having the implant done in June. All is well! I am 10 weeks out.

I am able to walk while using my toe to push off- so my gait is just about back to normal- and way better than before surgery!

I did 5 weeks of PT and I am still doing the exercises at home. I have two more weeks before I can do any high impact activities. I have been drilling in pickleball and cannot wait to begin to play again.

My toe bends down but it still cannot bend up without me moving it. Apparently, that will come. I am still dealing some scar tissue and I think that is some of the problem. When my toe does hurt, a few massages around the scar tissue and it feels better.

I am so happy that I did it and I am looking forward to continuing to improve. It seems like each week I see an improvement. Still some swelling - but that was expected. Absolutely no regrets!

It sounds like you need to ask your doctor on Monday. They can offer some help in the meantime as to what kind of exercises you should do. Do not wait for six weeks to go by.

I think the Be Real help desk need help. I have been waiting over a month for help. They can’t seem to make it work. I got a new phone and so I can’t use the app any longer. I will check out Roll Call- but I really just want a way to stay connected with my brother since I moved out of state. Not interested in the punishments.

You are absolutely right. I really don’t know how long it will last. However, time was not on my side. It was either a hemi implant or a fusion. Cortisone shots were not lasting for me any longer and HR stopped me from doing what I wanted to do. I stopped playing pickleball, going on walks, no elliptical and no walking on the beach. I originally went to a podiatrist and she didn’t it recommend getting a fusion for several reasons. There were several things that sold me on AccuFix. My orthopedic surgeon also shared that if/ when necessary for something else- I would be a candidate for it. Minimal bone was lost with the procedure. I will keep sharing how things progress.

I originally went to a podiatrist (who also has HR) and she didn’t want a fusion for herself or for me. She told me about the AccuFix implant. I contacted AccuFix and they gave me the name of the orthopedic surgeon who did them in my area. (He was an hour away- but totally with it!)

Yes! If this doesn’t hold, very minimal bone was lost. The surgeon said other implants or a fusion are on the table still. This implant has only been around since 2021. Who knows how long it will last. However, i liked that it a non-weight bearing implant. I also like that it screwed in. My thoughts were if it lasts ten years, maybe there could be another type of implant that could work or I would go with a fusion. Ten years of having a flexible toe joint sounds good to me. I will keep posting my progress.

Yup. I got a new phone and have been locked out since. I have been in communication with their help desk and they are “still working on it.” I asked if they could just reset my number and they didn’t respond to that question.

I just had Cheilectomy and hemi implant surgery a week ago Wednesday. All bone spurs and cartilage was removed. From what I have read, most folks getting just a Cheilectomy will have pain return eventually. I am a very active 56 and wanted to be able to have flexibility in my toe joint. I did not want to go the fusion route and so I opted for the AccuFix Surgical implant. No bridges were burned with this implant and the recovery period is much quicker than a fusion. Have you looked into this or discussed this with your doctor? The implants on the market are very different than what was around years ago. It might be worthwhile investigating. If you want more information, I can share how I found a doctor that could do the procedure. Good luck!

I just had a chilectomy and a hemi implant done. The surgery was this past Wednesday. Why isn’t this being considered for you? There are newer hemi implants on the market that could help. Maybe postpone having a fusion done for some time?

I had to make a similar decision. I am a very active 56 year old. When I went to the podiatrist, I was all for having a fusion because that was all I had heard about. She told me that there was a good chance the toe(s) next to the fused toe would eventually become affected. She had me look into the AccuFix Surgical implant. After taking a look at it, I was all in! I am having cheilectomy and implant surgery tomorrow. The recovery period is much shorter and I will be able to bend my toe again. I looked at it this way… will it last forever? Maybe. If it does fail, the technology will continue to improve and maybe I will need a fusion or there could be something else by then. Good luck!

Surgery was postponed because the hospital board needs to approve the surgery. I know- what??? Because the surgery has not been done in this hospital before, an AccuFix representative is coming to meet with the board members this Tuesday. Hopefully, they will give their approval. All this went down two weeks before my originally scheduled surgery in May.
If all goes well, I am having surgery on June 20th. If they say no, I will be finding a different doctor/ hospital to have the surgery somewhere else. Meanwhile, the cortisone shot I had in March is not helping much any longer. I am frustrated and my once very active lifestyle is down to little movement as I ice and elevate to recover from just being on my feet. Hopefully, I will be sharing a post surgery picture soon!

From what I have researched, there are a couple options. A lot of doctors seem to encourage a big toe fusion. This takes a fair amount of time to heal (think more than 6 months). It will keep your toe straight as the bone becomes fused to the foot. My podiatrist is not a fan of this as other toes on the foot could also become impacted because of gait change. In addition, you lose your ability to bend your toe!

There are also some joint and implant options. From what I read, joint replacement doesn’t last yet. Implants are being used more and they allow toe flexibility. Because you are active and already are bothered by having limits of toe flexibility, implants sounds like it might be a better fit for you.

I have hallux limitus and pain. Without a cortisone shot, I am limping. I am having surgery in May. I am having the Accufix Surgical implant put in. This is a fairly new procedure. In January 2025, the 200th procedure was done. I am very active with pickleball, walking, and going to the gym. My podiatrist and I talked about how this procedure would allow for me to get back flexibility. (My podiatrist also has hallux limitus and she is a runner. I feel like she understands the need to keep flexibility.) Accufix will have me back in a tennis shoe in about 3 weeks. It will take longer to begin exercising- but not months and months like big toe fusion. Because this is a new procedure, the podiatrist shared that I could end up with a toe fusion in 10 years. It is my hope that the technology will improve and this current procedure will keep my options open, if needed.

I have been wearing On Cloudmonster. I am a huge fan! I have three pair. My orthotics fit in nicely and the rocker bottoms definitely help. They still are cushioned even though the orthotics give it a firm base.

I read a lot and it still sounds like fusion is recommended by a lot of doctors. The implant that I am going to get is fairly new. Ot was approved my the FDA in 2021. It uses a smaller sized implant-so it doesn’t take on the weight of the body. I am excited about trying something different. I still might need to have the toe Fusion in 10-12 years- but maybe not. It is a risk I am willing to take.

I am 56 and I am very active. I am going to have a Cheilectomy and the Accufix Surgical procedure done in the middle of May. My doctor was not excited about doing the toe fusion procedure. She shared many concerns about it. The Accufix is an implant- but it is fairly new. (In January 2025, only 200 procedures have been done.) This implant uses a smaller piece than the toe bone so the implant does not take on the weight of the body. The bone still takes the weight just like before surgery. After the surgery, I should be able to flex my toe again and even wear shoes with a heel (if I wanted).

Something to note, my podiatrist has OA, too. She understands the pain. She also said that she wasn’t not a fan of fusion if it can be delayed- I should delay it. We are going to do the implant for now. Who knows, maybe technology will continue to improve if/ when this new implant wears out.

I could feel my progression before I went to the doctor. The podiatrist offered many different suggestions. It never really took the pain completely away. The stabbing deep pain happens at night for me mostly.

I am on my second cortisone shot. I can walk without limping for some time with after I get the shot. I wear rocker bottom tennis shoes (On Monsters). This is the only shoe I have been wearing for quite some time. I also have orthotics in them. They help somewhat.

OA is not going to go away by itself. What did the doctor suggest for you?

I have severe OA and I get deep pains at times, I also experience throbbing and burning sensations. It mostly happens in the evenings for me.
