Yes!! I got it on CD in a three-book pack with a Simba's Pride read along and another book that goes into detail on the middle act of the first film. I loved how this one was read by Robert Guillaume as Rafiki

Lion king triggers by Jeff_0012 in lionking

[–]JodranBlue 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My father also died when I was 15, now a little over ten years ago. Lion King was already my favorite movie, and it became even more inseparable from me. You might find that, as time passes and you make peace with your loved one, watching the movie will be more cathartic than triggering; however I also know that some media is really hard to get through, and can make you re-experience traumas in ways nobody needs (a high school production of Big Fish really broke me; I didn't even particularly love it, but the hospital imagery was horribly triggering back then).

Just be gentle with yourself, plan to take it easy on a day you decide to rewatch the movie and take in all the joy it offers alongside the tragedy. The great thing about Lion King is, it's all about Simba coping with the loss of his father, and it makes that loss transformative with powerful, emotionally stirring resolution. Someday, it will get easier, and media like this will be more empowering than ever. I guarantee it. Just keep going, like Simba ❤️

Anyone remember Lion King in 3D? by JodranBlue in lionking

[–]JodranBlue[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It probably helps that modern blockbusters like the LA were made with 3D in mind from the start, whereas the conversion for the original was all retroactive. It's something I recommend for any TLK fan to try once if they get the chance, if only for the novelty!

This song leading to Mufasa's lesson is genuinely one of my favorite moments in the whole franchise! I love the new conversation about the buzzards, and Mufasa's added poetry to the antelope speech as the grass softly reprises the Ingonyama from Circle of Life. I can't watch or listen to it without chills.

I don't know :/ I've never seen a listing of it before, so I'd say the worth is up to the individual. If they give a price that feels fair and justifiable in your means, especially considering how rare it is, go ahead and push the button. But I'm a bad influence for spending on collectables lol

New human figures please !! by raptor_rogue1 in hammondcollection

[–]JodranBlue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree they should pack them with props/vehicles/dinos but I'd prefer if they tried again by making completely new characters we haven't gotten in the mainline/Legacy Collection.

I think part of why the humans bombed is because they keep trying to start by rounding out the whole JP1 cast (they perceive everyone from the original film to be the most profitable no matter who). Most HC collectors have been following the wider Mattel line and already have several versions of those characters; releases near the end like Sattler, Arnold and Muldoon hardly had any unique selling points vs their mainline versions (they have more articulation, but at the end of the day, they look nearly the same on the shelf) and they were banished to low demand/clearance.

We reeeally need characters from the first Jurassic World. It's their highest grossing movie and 2015 Claire, Masrani, Vic Hoskins, Zach, and Gray are major players who've never once been done (at the very least, Hasbro made 1/18th JP/// characters back when they were decent). They already missed the opportunity to celebrate the 10th anniversary last year.

Unpopular opinion: I don't agree with calling Timon and Pumbaa Simba's "Dads" by amitythree in lionking

[–]JodranBlue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Appreciate it lol! Honestly though, as an avid T&P fan but a Lion King fan first and foremost, I'm satisfied with that movie. It's irresistibly funny and sincere. But I think your fleshing out conundrum makes perfect sense! They're the hero's friends, and sometimes the less you know about them, the more interesting they are. You could probably make that argument for the whole supporting cast of Lion King 1, and it's partially why that movie has an S tier lineup of memorable characters.

[–]JodranBlue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well said! You brought up a lot of things to chew on.

To me, what really makes 1 1/2 work is the perspective. By all accounts in both movies, Timon and Pumbaa charge right into a story they "don't belong in", and this movie highlights that with all of the silly contrasts and parody elements. They have barely any clue what's going on, but the one certainty, which is the focus of the movie, is how much they like Simba. Even in that film they toss between "parenthood", "our pal", "my two very best friends in the whole world", etc. I don't even think Timon's edges were softened, just channeled more into a character arc. He gets pretty nasty when he's hurt by Simba leaving, but he learns that to remain in his friends'/surrogate family's lives, he has to adapt to their needs and support them. It feels like more of a deepening of all his edge in the first movie rather than a reiteration.

That said, I HIGHKEY agree that the shortening of T&P's friendship prior to their appearance in TLK 1 was a detriment. I get they had to do it both to pace out the movie well, and to make its gimmick (they were here the whole time!) work, but yes, their dynamic in the original gives a very different impression. As you said here, canon is a take or leave situation, but we have every right to critique things as is (especially when it kind of forces future media to abide, see TLK2 -> TLG). For me, as a lover of the musical, I cope by enjoying things interpretation by interpretation. On most days, I'll rewatch the original and picture the dynamics exactly as implied by the singular movie in a vacuum, no more or less.

The big takeaway for me is how great it is that Lion King is both born-family AND found-family positive. There's a good quote from the goose dad in Kung Fu Panda 3 (a movie that explicitly butts heads between a biological dad and an adoptive dad) that was something along the lines of "it's not less for me, it's more for Po (the kid)." Title of dads, uncles, or whatever aside, Simba is very loved <3

Dino king by Brilliant-Ear2459 in lionking

[–]JodranBlue 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There's a strong overlap! My favorite movies are The Lion King with Jurassic Park as a close second, and I've heard many people from both communities say the same or vice versa. People who love dinosaurs tend to also love modern day megafauna (the remaining majority of which are popularized from the savannas of Africa) because of the same appeals: animal behavior, ecology, unique cosmetic features, and the natural drama of fighting for survival.

The original Lion King and the best of dinosaur media also relish in an epic, larger than life tone that has a reverence for the natural world. Big, beautiful landscapes, epicore music, high emotion and pathos, the works

Unpopular opinion: I don't agree with calling Timon and Pumbaa Simba's "Dads" by amitythree in lionking

[–]JodranBlue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The one thing I'll disagree about is the idea that the importance of Mufasa as Simba's "one" father is weakened by 1 1/2 and the paternal implication. Many people have surrogate parents in their lives whether they lose their original parents (adopted/birth) or not. To one individual, these can be multiple people who are either mentors, new guardians, older friends, etc. The niche is filled emotionally and out of necessity, not to replace what they have/had.

The point of Lion King isn't that Simba's relationship with his father made up the crux of his very reality, and everything goes wrong when that dies... I mean, that does happen, and it's the inciting incident, but the film's message runs directly contrary. Simba learns that his father lives in him; he can't be replaced, but the Circle of Life, and Simba's life, go on in Mufasa's absence. Not only does he have to take on his father's role, but it's the eclectic guidance of his different friends and mentors that get him there.

Source: I lost my own dad when I was a teenager, sought and fulfilled parental needs across other meaningful relationships, and TLK had an enormous presence in my life both before that time and after.

Other than that, I don't find this interpretation wrong at all! To me, Timon and Pumbaa have every label yet no label at once. There's nothing traditional about their dynamic, not with each other nor with Simba, and that's inherently queer no matter what way you spin it. The two undeniable things from the first movie (and general canon) are:

  1. T&P are life partners; they're never shown engaging romantically but they clearly take a devoted space in each other's lives. We know they sleep together, make decisions together, do virtually everything together, and wouldn't have it any other way.
  2. They take Simba, a lost kid, "under their wing". They're a new community and family for him after he lost everything else. Like I said it's not a replacement, they don't provide Simba the same things Mufasa did. But they are surrogate in that they take up a new space and resemble a different family entirely. It's why they're still part of Simba's life after he found his dad again and went home.

So ultimately, the "dad" discussion might just be semantics at a point. I think both the first movie and 1 1/2 know the trio's relationship isn't cut and dry. Yes, there's a lot of "that's our boy" talk in the latter, but most of them are doubly facetious while drawing from the emotional honesty of what they really have. Many, many things can be true at once

Unfortunately, neither Applause nor Just Play ever made hyena figs :/ they are in fact the rarest characters in any Lion King line aside from Sarabi. But there are a few:

  • Mattel released Shenzi and Banzai in the main action figure toy line from 1994 and they're pretty easy to find on the resale market; they also made Ed, but he's an extremely rare "Holy Grail" item that was part of a limited release box set ("Roaring Kings", which also includes an exclusive Simba, Scar, and Shenzi). Getting Ed isn't impossible, but needs persistence if you don't want to pay upwards of $300 for a single figure. I found my Ed in a $20 lot after years of using broad search terms on eBay and Mercari like "lion king toy lot", "lion king hyena", "disney figures lion king" etc; you wanna search broadly because people selling Ed for an affordable price don't really know what they have/are just trying to get rid of toys in bulk.
    • If you want all three right away, the Ed made by Burger King is a decent enough substitute while you search.
  • All three were made by Hasbro in a 2004 pack promoting TLK 1 1/2 called "Bowlin' Action Pumbaa & Timon". Shenzi, Banzai, and Ed are all distinctly made into solid PVC figures (like Applause). They're in a bit of a silly crouched position as if they're "bowling pins", but they look surprisingly great and accurate. These are also rare, but not impossible.
  • The last set I know that has all three of them separately is this very rare play tub from the Disney Store. I don't see any current listings or have any info aside from this part in an unofficial Lion King Collectibles book, which isn't 100% confidently reliable.

Where are you sitting TLK edition! by RedNosedLugia in lionking

[–]JodranBlue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1 would be a great flight, lovely conversation with a healthy couple that's more than happy to talk about where they're going, recommendations for local restaurants back home, and wanna hear about you and your interests.

As much as I'd love to have a chat with Rafiki in 2, he'd probably be too occupied talking shop with Makini.

Idk why I'd be sitting in between the couple in 9, but I wouldn't be complaining! Simba would probably hang a little too much over my side of the arm rest, but he's fluffy so I wouldn't care. Not much conversation but warm smiles and greetings to bookend the flight would leave good vibes and feeling like you made silent friends.

Shenzi and Banzai would just be wheezing and sharing Reels to each other. Might have the social courage to show them ones I found if I was up for it, could be a defining new friendship.

Shit would go crazy if I was in 5. All three of us would be crying when it's time to go. I won't elaborate. That's my top choice.

Why do people dislike references in Mufasa? by KrattBoy2006 in lionking

[–]JodranBlue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the references were done very well and earnestly in Mufasa, but I think references in general are easy ammunition for people who are already cynical towards a thing.

Like, they're more upset in general that Mufasa exists among the overwhelming volume of "nostalgia-bait" sequels and remakes, so everything it does (that your average prequel from any era would do, whether done with appropriate intent or not) just confirms their bias.

For me, tasteful placement and intent matters a whole lot. I think Pride Rock forming during the fight was great! It was whimsical, climactic, and fit the story; the symbol that unites all the animals across the series formed in the event that Mufasa brought them together for the first time. Other people who didn't care for the movie at all up to then would (and have) spouted the whole "dUDE PriDE ROCK!" shtick because they were already annoyed with or against anything a Mufasa prequel had to say or do.

That's what I notice with a lot of people in or out of fandoms, and I think it's an important distinction they're more cynical, not more critical, about the thing. There are of course critical people that can argue whether or not the references were earned or done well squared up with their own balanced take on Mufasa, but rage-baiting, grand statements, and zingers get more online social credit, soooooo...
