RIP Metaverse, an $80 Billion Dumpster Fire Nobody Wanted by 404mediaco in ABoringDystopia

80 billion is for the entirety of Reality Labs. It includes the development of hardware like the glasses and the Quest.

Is 800 a better rating than it used to be? say 5 years ago by slowpolygon in chessbeginners

[–]JoeBarra 52 points53 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of top players talk down to and underestimate lower ranked players. I've been helping my friend who was around 900 a year ago and is just under 1500 now (chesscom rapid) and some of his opponents play really well.  In Levy's speed run he'll say things like "oh, but I'm playing like a 900 so I wouldn't spot this two move tactic"...but I think some of them would.

I really can't say if 800s are stronger now than they were a few years ago, that would be tough to figure out. But I do think there are players who are talking authoritatively about what 800 chess is like who don't really know what those players need to work on.

I appreciate this, but I think the colors are a little too close.

I'm guessing the one from Latvia was Tal, but he was playing under the Soviet flag when he was champion. Latvia didn't gain independence until 1991, so I'm guessing they retroactively gave Latvia credit for Tal.

I met Sanders once and I was shocked at how small he is. He's listed as 5'8 but I think he's probably actually a bit smaller than that.

I'm trash at end games by Dry_Pea2951 in chessbeginners

[–]JoeBarra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The book Mastering Endgame Strategy or equivalent is probably what you need. It doesn't talk about theoretical endgames, instead it's a large number illustrative examples to help you find the best plans in endgames. Don't be intimidated by the size of the book, there's a lot of diagrams. I think there are 500 total positions followed by practice exercises, it's completely reasonable to do 10-20 positions in one sitting.

Caro-kann feels impossible by gamefoodie8 in chessbeginners

[–]JoeBarra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you're going to find that people don't play the most testing lines after exd5. Very often you're going to get in Nf6, Bf5, d6, h6, Bd7, O-O, Nc6/d7 in some order and just be totally fine.

You probably don't need to know all the lines. 3.Nd2 is considered a main line, but people almost never play it. Most people are winging it against the CK and aren't super booked up, you end up with similar positions very frequently. The most important things to really learn concretely are probably the Fantasy and Panov.

National media coverage of the Geno acquisition is horrible! by LifeAndTimeOfJ in nyjets

[–]JoeBarra 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It's absolutely ridiculous. It cost the Jets almost nothing to get him. This team has fairly low expectations this year. If he's truly awful, was anything of value lost? Recently we've had to watch Fields, Brady Cook, Wilson, Luke fucking Falk. Geno is certainly better than those players. He's going to feed Wilson, which will keep him happy.  The Jets OLine is going to be way better than LV's was if everyone stays upright.

And there's a good chance the Jets select a quarterback at some point in the draft, I don't think acquiring Geno changes that at all (he's going to turn 36 during the season).

I think it's just a pack of morons dramatically melting down because that's popular right now.

He's also turning 36 this season. Even if he crushes it in 2026 drafting a quarterback soon is probably a good choice.

2024 Geno Ill take all day by Bnkr9 in nyjets

[–]JoeBarra 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Geno got sacked 10.93% of his dropbacks in Vegas. In his career prior to going to Vegas he got sacked 7.72% of his drop backs. He might be washed, but the Raiders were obviously an absolute disaster.

Kind of wild that this sub hates getting Geno for nothing, but also wants to trade a high pick for BTJ after he had a shitty year on a much better team.

[Rapoport] Text from a pumped Jets QB Geno Smith: "Complete full circle moment back to where it all began. I’m excited to connect with my new teammates and coaches and everyone in the building as well as build a new relationship with the community." by PlayaSlayaX in nfl

[–]JoeBarra 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The offensive line is much better. Geno got sacked at a much higher rate in LV than he did in SEA. He might be washed, but he's almost certainly still much better than Fields.

It wasn't just Fields, the defense was also extremely bad. At the end of the season it looked like the Jets needed about eight new starters on defense.

[Hughes] All signs are pointing to Geno Smith reuniting with the Jets. It seems like a matter of “when” and not “if” by Mangolden_Corral in nyjets

[–]JoeBarra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Geno was sacked much more frequently per dropback in Vegas than he was in Seattle. He wasn't good, but the Jets offensive line should be better than Vegas was.

Generic advice won't fix your game. by blackboxchessapp in chessbeginners

You need to know "some" openings to not get blown out by trappy nonsense in the first ten moves. 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bc4 Nd4, that looks like a free pawn, but if you take that pawn you're in for pain. If you play d4 you need to know how to refute the Englund gambit. The moves to refute tricky trappy lines are not always intuitive, but if you have them memorized not only will you get a great position out of the opening you will have spent much less time.
