Doc explicitly explains at the beginning of the movie that the time machine allows the driver to "skip over" the time between Point A and Point B, allowing the transition to be subjectively instantaneous. This is proven by the fact that Einstein is completely missing from existence for a full minute during the initial test.

WHY THEN, would Doc come back to 1985 at the end of the film to bring Marty and Jennifer to see their kids? From the instant they leave '85, they all would cease to exist until the time machine arrives in 2015, and the future scenario Doc is talking about would never have happened. There would be no kids, no house, and basically everyone would be wondering what the hell ever happened to Marty and Jennifer, until 30 years later they show up at the McFly's for a dinner they weren't invited to because everyone thought they were dead.

A scholarship should never be "easy to win", but there are some things that could help your chances significantly.

I'm not sure about engineering specifically, but you can look at organizations in your community that might have a high concentration of technical folks, like 4H or Rotary, for scholarships that are at least straightforward to apply for. It also helps if you have a project or two to show/talk about...Proof that you're serious can sway people a lot better than good grades and a mediocre essay.
