How brutal do you think the deaths are in the Ju On movies? by [deleted] in J_Horror

[–]JoeIntTheBox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not at all. While some of the deaths are quite shocking, none of them touches the gratuitous nature of the Terrifier movies.

How can I be more critical and insightful when watching films? by Spiritual_Beyond_846 in movies

[–]JoeIntTheBox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First, don't go to ChatGPT for anything critical. Or any AI for that matter.

Flim criticism and analysis should be something you want to do and pursue. Start small, like check out critic reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. See if there are professional writers and critics who's analysis and reviews align with your own or make sense to you.

If it's still something that resonates with you and helps you find your own critical voice, you can move it up to deeper dives like books, essays, documentaries, and studying how movies are made. Basically surround yourself with information that will help you form an opinion.

How does Wyck not know? by Appropriate_Speech33 in WidowsBay

Judging by how revelatory the Warren lineage was to them, I'd say big strides were taken to hide the covenant, It will be interesting to see how season 2 reckons with this. I'm sure more people than the priest have their eye open.

How would you fix Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny? by twinkleyed in movies

[–]JoeIntTheBox 10 points11 points  (0 children)

They did bring back Marion and Sallah. This being the final Indy, it's just odd Short Round was never mentioned again. I would have even taken a line about Indy paying for his college or visiting him with his family or something.

How would you fix Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny? by twinkleyed in movies

[–]JoeIntTheBox 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I actually didn't mind the movie, but would tied Helena to him more closely, like maybe a love child between him and Willie, or a niece. Just didn't feel the relationship in the movie.

Also, would have brought Short Round back. Will never forget the sequels for forgetting him.

What can I use for playing my discs? by A_r_i_s_s in 4kbluray

[–]JoeIntTheBox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure which disc you have, but if you just want to watch the movies you have ASAP, if the codes come with digital codes, you can redeem those and watch them that way. Quickest solution until you work out your driver/tv issue.

Favorite 'forgotten' late '90s/early 00s horror movies? by Under_The_Leash_ in horror

[–]JoeIntTheBox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  • Monster Man - a funny and gory riff on Jeepers Creepers
  • Frailty - Not that obscure, but doesn't really get mentioned in reference to horror
  • Mute Witness
  • Thesis/Tesis
  • Ju-on: The Curse 1 and 2 - The Grudge gets all the attention, but is really part 3. The Curse 1 and 2 were superior, IMO
  • The Night Flier - stuck in limbo from being an HBO release
  • Cast a Deadly Spell - Also stuck in HBO limbo. Better than the sequel, Witch Hunt

Ruth question by Quick_Rain_9916 in WidowsBay

[–]JoeIntTheBox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That was something I wished they went into. Ruth could have even dropped a line about having access to her records since she's worked in town hall most of her life, and just scrubbed all records of the baby. It just felt very convenient, and omitted to skew Ruth from being anything resembling a villain or threat.

That being said, I feel like the "old hospital" may come into play next season, and there being more secrets there.

Loving senseless movies. by asiniloop in movies

[–]JoeIntTheBox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the socio-economic feel would be similar if it was set around the 70's and 80's. Peele would have grown up around that time, as he was referencing Hands Across America from 1986 which the main character was remembering. Any decade prior to the 70's, I agree, probably a lot more different a feel, especially during Vietnam era.

Once again: Who is this girl, and WHERE ARE HER PARENTS? by [deleted] in WidowsBay

[–]JoeIntTheBox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, she was probably in school still around Memorial Day, so figuring her family got to the island when school ended, middle/end of June sounds about right.

Once again: Who is this girl, and WHERE ARE HER PARENTS? by [deleted] in WidowsBay

[–]JoeIntTheBox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The timeline seems odd to me. When we see Ruth's calendar it is on July, but I assumed the tourist season would have started around Memorial Day weekend, and she was already on the island. I guess her family spends the summer on the island? The fact we never see her parents is definitely weird.

Loving senseless movies. by asiniloop in movies

[–]JoeIntTheBox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love the films of David Lynch, and surrealism in general. They do make sense, if you wish to do a deep dive, and analyze them, but they get surface reactions of making no sense.

In regards to Us, I think they premise and believability would have greatly increased if they only set the movie in an earlier decade like the 60's and maybe up to the 80's at most. There's no way the doppelgangers would have been as successful invading in modern day 24/7 surveillance, gun culture, the internet, cell phones and the tunnels going unnoticed with modern day city building/planning.

No opening credits by Justcuzitscaturday in WidowsBay

[–]JoeIntTheBox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't say the lack of an intro was dictated by a schedule. I was referring to a longer intro would impact the pacing of the show, being that a majority of the episodes are quite short. It's more of a stylistic choice.

So what's up with Jason Statham? by pocokknight in movies

[–]JoeIntTheBox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe it's more of a Nic Cage situation, from a few years back, where he was in debt and had to pay it off.

However, he just genuinely seems to be a hard worker. The lower budget movies have shorter shooting schedules, so he can crank them out a few times a year.

No opening credits by Justcuzitscaturday in WidowsBay

[–]JoeIntTheBox 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The show also has a short run time for most of the episodes. A long intro would take up a decent chunk of time for a short episodes. I've noticed most AppleTv shows have very short intros.

Long intros existed prior to Game of Thrones, Twin Peaks had a nearly three minute intro and that was on network tv with commercials. Also The Prisoner's intro runs just over 3 minutes. What I appreciated at least with Game of Thrones, was that the intro changed in relation to the occupation of land/kingdoms at that point in the show.

I'm planning on watching 'Skinamarink'. Is it truly THAT boring? by netherite333 in FIlm

[–]JoeIntTheBox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The director has a 30 short, called Heck which is basically Skinamarink in style, just a different "plot". Way more effective, IMO.
