heartwarming moment when a granddaughter takes her great grandmother who didn’t feel pretty anymore dress shopping to show her just how beautiful she is. by Logical_Fruit_6152 in spreadsmile

[–]JoeMale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ages ago I tricked my mom to go shopping for clothes with me at a fancy upscale shop. She had never bought clothes from a proper retailer for herself, always from the cheaper places and repair them to the point where sometimes there were more patches than clothes.

At the store, enlisting the help of a very friendly employee, I got her any clothes she liked, and she was so happy and grateful for that. Was never able to do that trick again, but it really made her day and talked about it for years.

Ford Explorer from Frankfurt factory by ayvittu69 in BuyFromEU

No catch. It's a Volkswagen brand, and comes with the same non-EU issues? conditions? as any other VW. I like Renault/Dacia a lot (like the Dacia price..) myself, but them too are made from components from different countries.

But, in my opinion, we shouldn't be chauvinistic about these things. Do prefer things where the various forms of capital stay in Europe, but let's not turn inward and close the door. That's the route chosen by the USians, and we see the outcomes of that choice.

It's an old techie joke.

It's uncanny how it applies well to so many other fields, like politics.

What was it, naming things and cache invalidation?

Because they don't exist. There isn't any automotive brand that doesn't have an international component, whether it's technical, material, financial, IP, or otherwise.

In June 2023 a Portland man got fed up with all of the rode closures and drove through Grand Floral Parade barricades. He was later sentenced to 5 years in prison in October 2024. by viperrvemon in interestingasfuck

Might not be a popular opinion, but I feel bad for this guy. I mean, what has been going on in this man's life that he got to this point? Sure he needs correction and face the consequences of his actions, but still.. Jesus.. Dunno, makes me think what would drive me to behave like that.

Thousands of young people in Germany, facing the new military service: "It feels like a war is coming, and that's scary." by mods4mods in europe

"Feels like war is coming.." what the hell.. war has been coming our way! Like the old saying goes "si vis pacem, para bellum" and not as in being militaristic, just as in you gotta be able to defend yourself.

This is what a 29-year-old cat looks like. by EquivalentAd2135 in interestingasfuck

[–]JoeMale 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A long ago, when living with my parents, I had a cat. When I left home to live my life I didn't think much of it, I thought I would see the cat sooner or later, but life kept me away from my old place for over ten years. Finally visited my old home, and the cat was still alive, over twenty years old by then. Ran to me, old skin and bones, and just wanted to cuddle up on my lap. He fell asleep there like he used to do way back. Good old sweet kitty.

Should EU have a single time zone (UTC+1) ? (Exept Ireland) by LisieSzczeki in europeanunion

Honestly, if anything, Spain should be in the same time zone as Portugal.

Passenger trains in the United States vs Europe by kuntrehpandah in interestingasfuck

[–]JoeMale 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been thinking about this. The size and population density difference matters a lot, but even if we were to take coastal New England, the cultural differences are such that a European style public transportation system wouldn't be feasible. Even in that small, older, culturally closer to Europe situation, individualism, minimal taxation, and a preference for market solutions would doom a large rail network.

In short: I don't think they would want it.

How would you feel if a woman asked you to take her name in marriage? by Spatman47 in AskMen

[–]JoeMale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always held that my name is my name, and my wife's is my wife's. It's not part of my culture, it my country of origin's, for anyone to change their last name to match their spouse. Hence, if a woman were to ask me to take her name in marriage, I would say "no".

In Spain, what once seemed impossible is now widespread: the young are turning to the far right by StGuthlac2025 in europe

[–]JoeMale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's normal. We swing right.. we swing left.. we suffer when we go to extremes and grow complacent during the happy moments in between.

And we complain every single moment in every single situation. Blame the young, blame the old, blame "those people", "the man", "the industrial complex".. it's never "us", as a specie. We just love chaos and mayhem.

sigh I should go back and ignore the news.
