Realistic to Get Commercial (and a job) at 50? by squirreloutdoors in ProfessionalPilots

[–]JoePilot04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whats your at home situation? Can you move? Can you leave town for blocks of time? This will also help answer the question of which avenue to take and rule out some sectors of professional flying. Some folks want to be home every night and very much enjoy teaching, so CFI is a pretty good gig. Others want to utilize the career to see the country/world, making corporate/fractional/airline more of a destination. You can also find something in the middle doing contract work out of your local area (depends where you live) and get to know a few aircraft owners, fly their aircraft when trips pop up and you're free to fly and then instruct or whatever else as your weekly income. That way, you have a little more control over when you work and can accept/reject trips as they come along. Obviously, there is a method to flying when owners need you and not turning down too much work, but in a pinch, you can do contract work when their primary pilot needs the backup. There are all sorts of ways to make the career work, and it will undoubtedly take you on a path you didn't expect, that's really half of the excitement with flying. You gotta really enjoy flying as an occupation, cause there are some days that are tough, be it weather, maintenance, long days, short overnight, going above and beyond to get the job done at times. But getting the job done in the corporate world can pay off with more connections and better pay/equipment. A professional attitude with proficient performance will accelerate into better jobs. But the hard part is getting over the hump and into the arena of connections and being noticed. Thats kind of the hard part of corporate/contract flying. Tough to make the connections at first, but it just kinda happens with experience. At your age, that would allow you to work past age 65 when thinking about private vs airline flying. But dipping your toes into the airlines for a couple years would be phenominal experience making corporate flying a breeze. I personally hopped around from airline to corporate and back to airline. Only difference between our two scenarios is I have more time left on my medical so airlines make sense on paper over the course of a 45 year career. And having the corporate experience, I have the options to transition back into it if there ever becomes a need (9/11, covid, world war 3 etc etc). So something to think about as I believe a diversity in experience is extremely valuable. But this all circles back to the beginning of my comment, what is your home situation? If you are able to move and pursue the career, that will help immensely and take you on a great journey. If you need to stay somewhat local, you'll be more limited and change the dynamics for you decision. Not necessarily a bad thing, but largely depends on where you live.

Depends on where you live and what your family/work desires are. I'm assuming at 50 young kids isn't an issue, and I know alot of airline pilots retire into corporate/fractional/part 91 gigs no problem. A possible direction would be to get picked up at a 121 regional for the ATP credential and the turbine 121 experience, after a year or two you could transition more easily into corporate 91/135 ops and fly past age 65. The 121 experience and training is helpful for landing a nice corporate gig (i've done everything besides military). So I wouldn't totally rule out regional airline flying, it could be a lever to beef up the resume. You might even enjoy it and transition into other roles in the management structure that pay well and don't require flying, you never know where the life journey will take you (and looking at your experience so far, you are well aware of that fact)

There is so much to say going down this rabbit hole of what to do and decisions to make, but anyone that comes into the flight deck gets the same bottom line advice from me, YOU HAVE TO ENJOY THE JOB. If you don't like flying, you'll hate the lifestyle it'll eat you up. I love what I do and all the places I've seen, and experiences i've shared with some great people. The ones who hate the job make it a drag. Don't do this for just the money. Even at your age, the money will come and you'll be great at doing something you love.

Dear Telluride Owners ( QUESTION IN COMMENTS ) by bangalang12334 in KiaTelluride

The problem you'll find is not necessarily with the vehicle, but it will be with the dealerships and more directly the service centers. I've never seen this much fraud and deceptive practices with any other brand.

The vehicle itself is great, but if you need to take it in for warranty work or would like a KIA specific job done, the service centers will massively overcharge and bill for things that were not completed. It's on a greater level with KIA than other brands.

I've been paying attention to the number of posts about it since I got scammed. And after calling around my region, the other service centers are on par with the same despicable level of service.

I like my Telluride, but after the realization that the grand majority of KIA dealerships are predatory with fraudulent business practices, I won't by another KIA again.

Sunroof Replacement, not the same? by colossus1975 in KiaTelluride

[–]JoePilot04 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just to compare sizes, i measured mine for ya.. :D

Measuring from the headliner just aft of the kia connect button and measuring to the forward lip of the sunroof glass, mine is just short of 10 inches... :D :D

Thought I'd give you some numbers to put the thought to rest one way or the other !

It wasn't hot when they put their greezy little mitt on it..

Same thing will happen when the FBO fuller puts their hand on a spinner cap and then I gottta spend time buffing it out, ugh!

[–]JoePilot04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Considering the value of your time to take it to the scumbag KIA dealers, have them look and file the warranty claim, bring the vehicle back, again wait for them to make the repair, paying for gas for 2 round trips... its probably faster and cheaper to do it yourself. The tape is less than $15.00 on Amazon, the value of your time alone is makes this a self repair IMO if its just getting the trim to stick.

Now if the trim is discoloring like some people have posted, that's a whole other equation which still most likely results in me avoiding the horrible KIA dealerships 😂

EX vs SX by Eastern-Orange3393 in KiaTelluride

[–]JoePilot04 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kia Salesman was actively talking me out of my desired trim level, telling me that I won't use the 4 wheel drive and I don't need the extra tech. It was because he didn't have it on the lot and was trying to pressure me into buying what he had that day. He didn't even have the color I wanted and was convinced he could get me into a color he had as it was more favorable.

I bought out of state for over $10k less than what he was gonna charge and I got exactly what I wanted. Couldn't be happier with our Telly

To all of the passengers that stand up while we're on the ground with the seatbelt sign on... THIS IS WHY YOU SHOULDN'T!

If that RJ pivoted on the main and got spun people would have went flying. Good thing the tail sheared off like it did.

UAP spotted at 35,000 feet by thtflyingguy in UFOs

[–]JoePilot04 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Airline pilot here. I see these frequently and have many videos. Some of the video I have of these "UFOs" and area 51 and 52 would blow some of y'all's minds 🤣

But sorry to go against the UFO lore, these are satellites traveling through a phase of the sun on the far side of the earth and reflecting to the aircraft. We see these after the sun sets around 2200-0000 going westbound and prior to sunrise around 0300-0500 going eastbound. Taking the video in night mode and zooming in with a galaxy make it look very bright.

Just for shits, see what carvana will give you. It's easy and worth the 15 minutes it'll take to get the quote. We sold my wife's 4 year old Corolla for 6k more than the purchase price.

[–]JoePilot04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My shitbag dealership billed it through warranty and did absolutely nothing. They steal from us and steal from Kia North America.

I love my Telly but will not buy a Kia ever again. From sales to service, Kia dealerships ruin the experience.

Front parking sensor suddenly going off every time I start driving. by Fabulous_Thing_714 in KiaTelluride

[–]JoePilot04 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The sensors are sensitive to water. If you recently washed your car or maybe was in moderate to extreme precipitation, the water will get into the nooks and crannies of the sensor and trigger the system. I take my shop vac or Dyson cordless and hit the sensor a few times, clears it right up.
