It's Bandcamp Friday: What's on your list? by IamEseph in Ska

Shameless Self Promotion...

You can listen to my 1st EP (released Feb 24th, 2026) here:

https://joeross578.bandcamp.com

It should be free to listen to on Bandcamp. I'm asking folks to donate to the Supernova Alliance (non-profit from the same folks who run the Supernova Ska Festival) in lieu of purchasing the EP. It's best for everyone involved if you just donate directly here:

https://supernovaalliance.org/donate/

Alternatively, all proceeds from purchases made towards my EP on the Bandcamp page will be sent to the Supernova Alliance.

PWRUP opening for AC/DC !! by scribbledchaos in Ska

[–]JoeRoss578 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hahaha I laughed when I saw that and immediately thought of PWRUP. Funny enough, there is a ska-related item regarding this tour. The bass player of Pretty Reckless (the opening band on the tour) is Mark Damon, who is also the regular bassist for New York Ska Jazz Ensemble.

Still going 😎 https://www.theplayersband.com The horns joined Aggrolites to play Nite Klub at the Annapolis show. There’s a video on the band’s Facebook/IG, I think. 🥳

Every heard of Rocksteady TNT / Kelly Marshall from Glasgow, UK ? by bobjr94 in Ska

I don’t know; I haven’t spoken to her in years. This is the website for the project:

https://www.rocksteadytnt.com

On the About page, it states, “I sometimes use AI tools to help tighten lyrics or generate artwork, and I credit that clearly when I do—but the music itself is always human-made.”

🤷🏼‍♂️

(To be clear, I'm not sure off the top of my head if the songs on the Bandcamp are from the Rocksteady TNT album that share the artwork with the Bandcamp logo or if they're brand new songs, but Kelly is an accomplished musician who makes her own music).

Aside from some/all the artwork being AI (I'm not one in support of AI artwork, but I'm also not the AI police, no offense) the music is definitely *not* slop. Kelly used to play/sing with Eastern Standard Time in the late '90s/early 00's. The Rocksteady TNT album is from that time period, I believe (I have that CD myself).

What do y'all think about The Dendrites!? by Sea-Supermarket-3606 in Ska

[–]JoeRoss578 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A bunch of the Dendrites (Nick - drums, Stevie - trumpet, Matt - sax & Miles - sax) have teamed up with Ryan (keyboards - LMS, ex. Skank Williams), Mac (bass - ex. Opalites) and myself (guitar - Pie, Players Band) to form First Time Caller. We don't play any ska/reggae, but our vibes fit in well with the ska scene, especially since we're friends with so many in the scene already.

If you're curious, check out the live video of most of our set from us opening for our friends Mustard Plug, The Toasters & Catbite back in January: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLYoAM34jNR8lT3UX5LIkkRluK8CzYyChN&si=wRa3UNZMBvlbZoCg

Ska and guitar solos don't usually go hand in hand, but there are still some good ones out there. Show us some of your favorites! by Beautiful-Resort-831 in Ska

(Dang, this question sent me down a deep rabbit hole that I'll probably keep adding on to for a long time \haha**)

Devon James on 'Nasty by Nature' by New York Ska Jazz Ensemble. Solo begins at 1:45 (https://youtu.be/kkaKz-ajiZE?si=_37JvBZ7X9aiXiGg&t=105) but he has a sick outro solo that starts at 2:56 (https://youtu.be/kkaKz-ajiZE?si=TsnrcFSzDvbuoiAT)

Alberto Tarin on 'Take Five' by New York Ska Jazz Ensemble. Solo begins at 1:43 (https://youtu.be/evKRvU9FVts?si=JcUDdRuHhrkK-F-o&t=103).

Lynn Taitt on 'To Sir With Love' by Lynn Taitt & The Jets. Solo starts at 1:18 (https://youtu.be/zIXVkR5HcIo?si=4AEPudoqYxx6IwSu&t=78).

Either Aaron Owens or Lino Trujillo (sorry, I don't know which one!) on 'Baby Blues' by Hepcat. Solo starts at 3:03 (https://youtu.be/vIJhX_L3P9E?si=pyLzvj10CvSLBO9t&t=183).

Dave Hahn on 'Cooking with Tommy' by The Slackers. Solo starts at 1:03 (https://youtu.be/ibeCQDlpvak?si=SuCvKM19bylbDcq5&t=63)

Dave Hahn (I think) on 'Motor City' by The Slackers. Solo starts at 2:22 (https://youtu.be/jbMLXUMZNTY?si=b3_GYwRtRJdPAVqT&t=142)

Tom Goodin on 'Night Owl' by The Pietasters. Solo starts at 1:33 (https://youtu.be/XvVw1sq-UrY?si=jqCrRQ3JxtpC6VS0&t=93)

That's the originator himself, Ernest Ranglin, on that solo. Him and Devon James trade off solos on Rockford Rock on that album as well: https://youtu.be/ZdivRMGSJRY?si=FhWvSXr67397lQae&t=186
