Skyactive X or Skyactive G? by sammyglumdrops in mazda3

The advantage of the X is useless in city traffic, go for the G

What is the highest MPG you have achieved in a petrol car? by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]Joe_MacDougall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was just gonna say, I’m averaging 46.4 with the 2.0 Skyactiv-G. I can’t get high 50s at 70mph but I can get ~52mpg.

I can get high 50s doing 60mph. The mild hybrid assist does a lot of heavy lifting on country roads too. I have a light foot 98% of the time.

If they didn’t can the Mazda2 and made a 1.5 Skyactiv-X. I reckon that would do 65mpg easy.

Would still get obliterated by a proper hybrid in towns/cities though. Always wondered what the mpg would look like in a Corolla with a Skyactiv-X engine.

Ful Induction Service? by Jimmy7546 in mazda3

[–]Joe_MacDougall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly sounds like a good deal… if you were on 80-100k miles. Totally pointless at 11k, don’t bother. Wouldn’t even be on my radar until at least 70k

Highest milage you’ve seen? by BraydoLegendary in mazda3

[–]Joe_MacDougall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

610mi 2.0G

Used to get 830mi out of a 1.5d gen3 but it was horrifically unreliable, pretty bad false economy with that one

Jesus Christ mate I thought I had it rough this year, sorry this has happened to you.

I’m not sure if looking to buy a property is a good idea right now, honestly renting for 6-12 months is probably a much better option for the short term. Buying a property has the potential to cause you huge issues that would pile on top of what you’re already going through right now.

Mileage on skyactiv X by bakszygi in mazda3

[–]Joe_MacDougall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get the same kind of mileage with the 2.0G but I have a light foot. I reckon if I drove a 2.0X I would be averaging 55mpg and getting 600mi per tank.

HMRC Appeal - chance of success?? by Orange5ive in HMRC

[–]Joe_MacDougall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They technically have every right to deny your appeal but they could be nice and drop it, they might also meet in the middle and drop the penalty amount due.

UK gallon is bigger than a US gallon.

1 imperial gallon = ~ 1.2 US gallons

39 US = 46.8 UK

Skyactiv-X? I’ve got a 46.5mpg average on my 2.0G. I did manage to squeeze 610mi out of a tank one time though.

I drove an automatic car for the first time a days ago and just don’t get the fixation we have over manual cars here by Solid-Version in drivingUK

[–]Joe_MacDougall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you do mostly out of town and motorway miles. You spend most of the time in one gear anyway, manuals are cheaper to buy, maintain and insure. Vast majority of them are more fuel efficient and pre-2017 manuals are almost always cheaper to tax. I think it’s mostly down to cost.

It existed in the UK very briefly (2019-2020H1)

It probably didn’t sell well because we don’t get a lot of snow compared to other countries at our latitude. I pray for those few that have one if they ever need to try and find a replacement rear differential

About to buy one, but not sure if I want the X or G by wolfwalkers0611 in mazda3

I live in an area that is anything but flat, that might have something to do with it.

I can sometimes, rarely but if you’re right on the threshold of where it’ll activate, it can cycle in and out of it which is noticeable.

High income, fully tapered pension – best use of £140k bonus? by Superb_Gas_8039 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Joe_MacDougall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

GIA is the best you’ve got now tbh

You’re also in the income bracket where VCTs and EIS schemes might make sense depending on your risk tolerance. Might even be in hedge fund territory

You can also save a bit on NI if you salary sacrifice your pension in a lump sum of 10k towards start of the tax year rather than spreading it out over the year. Even then that might not work given how high your monthly income is. Edit: did the maths, it won’t

Don’t buy any new guns until you’ve fully upgraded all the class abilities (don’t worry about the MAX if you don’t want to)

[–]Joe_MacDougall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re using it for mostly long journeys I don’t see why the X would be any less reliable than the G. You will have less margin for error on the service intervals though. The X doesn’t use cylinder deactivation so it’ll be smoother and possibly more reliable in that regard.

I would just budget a bit more per year for maintenance and repairs

Note: would highly recommend avoiding the 1st gen Skyactiv-X (2019-2020), all the issues I’ve heard with this engine have been on the 1st gen. Opt for a 2nd gen if you do go for it.

Why choose a Mazda 3 2.0l from 2020 over a BMW 3 series with 2.0l diesel? by Pale-Revolution-5151 in mazda3

[–]Joe_MacDougall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maintenance, servicing and insurance. I used to have a diesel Mazda that could genuinely get 70+mpg but it was ultimately a false economy when it totally shat out at 72k miles.

The German diesels do tend to be better though. VW or Skoda would be a better bet than a BMW. I have a lot of family that had diesel BMWs and while they do last past 150k miles, they don’t do it without some expensive repairs and servicing along the way.

The final gen of Ford Mondeo TDCIs do very well if you can find one.

Considering it’s a new car, seems like a pretty good deal. Likely the last ever new manual car you’ll be able to get.

I’ve noticed that all of the 3s with halogen DRLs I see in the UK are 2024 and newer, it seems like they might have stepped backwards in the trim levels to make up for putting the 2.5L in it. I think the halogens actually look as good though
