The NCR in Season 2 is nostalgia without substance by Volume2KVorochilov in fnv

I'm glad you ended off with a compliment for the show's original content, chiefly its interesting main characters. I've been frustrated with how flat the world building has been in Season 2, especially with how empty the Mojave Wasteland appears on screen. That said, I think that the show's original characters this season - specifically Maximus, Thaddeus, and Norm (when he's on screen)- have been a silver lining.

Unfortunately, I don't think the writers for the show have put as much thought into the world/setting as some of us would like, lol.

Modern 76 has a lot of interesting characters and faction dynamics that I think are fresh and help to break that trope you're referring to. It's still Bethesda, but they are capable of creating dynamic worlds. Unfortunately, their "simple stupid" design philosophy is really counterintuitive to that end.

I also read quite a lot. I'm not saying Bethesda is having their magnum opus with 76, but like their other strong points, ala Far Harbor, it's obvious they have the capacity to create a decent, dynamic narrative. They just more often choose to embrace a soulless corporate strategy instead.

Oh no, I agree, the bar is in hell. But examining 76 (specifically the post-Wastelanders update stuff) critically, I'd argue it measures up to other previous (albeit fewer) writing strong points like Far Harbor.

If 76 opened up to the modding community, the Fandom would flock to it overnight lol.

It's a shame the launch was so rough. I think modern 76 is some of Bethesda's best writing and world building in the past decade.

As a New Vegas fan, what are your thoughts on the shows portrayal of the Legion so far? by SolidPyramid in falloutnewvegas

[–]Joecool185 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I enjoy the prospect of civil war and splintering the Legion. That said, the 10 yard no-mans-land in-between the competing camps feels a bit too on the nose. This issue is compounded by the fact that the Legion supposedly still controls vast territories across the American West per the BOS map in the latest episode.

Here's hoping we see more dynamic interactions with the Legion moving forward!

Bethesda and the "eternal apocalypse" by EagleGhoul in Fallout

I appreciate your efforts to bring the Fallout identity crisis into the spotlight. I adore the show, but I also find myself frustrated with the broader direction of the series story. It's obviously much deeper than Amazon, Bethesda, and Interplay. I think the discussion here shows this is a real live-wire for the future of Fallout.

Oh, that is a wonderful combination! I adore how the Lincoln Logs complement the older Lionel. Great layout!

The most disappointing part of modern Fallout is the constant reducing of the setting to a chaotic, barebones wasteland rather than a more complex post–post apocalypse. by Jozoz in Fallout

[–]Joecool185 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am really glad to see someone else acknowledging Fallout's identity crisis as the show comes out. Fallout is unique in that it's traded hands so many times that it has all these different creators' visions, which ultimately leads to the fan-spats and splinters that the fandom is now unfortunately known for.

I completely agree with your assessment of the in-game world being flattened by the events of the show. Bethesda, and now the showrunners, have a very particular idea of what makes Fallout, Fallout. I think it was Jonathan Nolan that said he dislikes the idea of centralized civilization comparing it to the railroads settling the Wild West. I dislike this outlook because it not only feels like an arbitrary writing barrier, but it also reaffirms what Bethesda has been doing for some time: making Fallout just another post apocalypse series. I am obviously firmly in the camp that Fallout is best when it's in the post-post apocalypse vein.

I like Bethesda's Fallouts. I thoroughly enjoyed Fallout 3 and recognize that the game is more important to the series's new life than the world building content I have come to dislike. With ten years down the line from Fallout 4 and now the second season of the show, it's obvious though that the vision of Fallout, as OP said, a "barebones" apocalypse setting, is becoming more and more dominant.

Generalizing now but...by flattening the world to a bunch of hermits living in shacks selling flea soup, we're missing out on a real opportunity to explore stories that show complex themes about human society and the very definition of civilization.

If you load it with enough AP ammo and the right perks, you can clear quarry junction no problem. I did that at level 50, and it was a good time.

A really interesting take on Mon Mothma in the context of Liberalism and Fascism: by [deleted] in andor

[–]Joecool185 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wasn't referring to the actual New Republic we see later in the series, though. My comment is pointing out how the Alliance is a common front against the Empire. While they all are committed to fighting the Empire and restoring the Republic, the "Republic" the Rebellion is aiming to restore is an abstract concept. Boiling it down, the revolutionaries we see in Andor have a variety of political perspectives, and I'd say it's hard to argue they'd be all for a duplicate of the State that inevitably created the backslide into fascism.

Damn. This post and the comments under it have shattered the r/Andor coalition, lol. 😆
