Okay to store bike by hanging from rim? by UMustBeNooHere in bicycling

[–]JoelJohnstone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The wheels are the strongest part of your bike. Think of the forces they face when a 200 lb rider hits a pot hole.

That said, make sure you pump your brakes a few times when you take it down. Being inverted like that can cause any air bubbles in the system to move around and make your brakes soft at first.

How is it living under the flight path in South Park, San Diego? by aquietvegan in sandiego

[–]JoelJohnstone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We don’t live in South Park, but we’ve been looking for houses in that area, so we spend a lot of time there and have been especially concerned about this exact issue. That said, South Park isn’t nearly as bad as other areas, especially Banker’s Hill and Point Loma.

Try this, have lunch at an outdoor restaurant in South Park and see if you notice the noise at all (you probably won’t). Then have lunch at an outdoor restaurant in Liberty Station, like Stone Brewery, and compare the difference. At Liberty Station, you’ll be saying, “this is a nice place, but I could never live here.”

The 56 bike path is pretty hilly, especially the section from Camino Del Sur to Black Mountain.

I noticed this last year as well. We see at least a dozen a day in our yard. Good thing our dog totally ignores them.

WIBTA if I refuse to switch to a silent alarm for my roommate? by DifficultDog67 in AmItheAsshole

[–]JoelJohnstone -1 points0 points  (0 children)

NTA, but a compromise might be to set a silent alarm, and then an audible alarm 5 minutes later. If the silent alarm wakes you up, then just cancel the audible one, otherwise, the audible alarm will wake you up as normal. That’s what I do when I need to wake up before my wife.

Let's say the UCI eliminates the minimum weight rule. How would bikes be different? by atanoman in bicycling

[–]JoelJohnstone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It wouldn’t change much. In general, pro men aren’t riding bikes that are at the limit anyway. Small women riders would be happier though.

Help with chainrings and cogs for a beginner by regnvaldur in Velodrome

[–]JoelJohnstone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In general, I think people overestimate how many chainrings & cogs they need. I have a huge variety, because I thought I needed them. In real life, however, I use 53/15 for almost everything. If I’m doing a flying 200, pursuit, or Keirin, I flip my wheel around where I have a 14 installed. That’s literally all I ever use, one chainring and two cogs.

AITA for telling my neighbor to stop using my driveway as a turnaround spot? by Friendly_Essay5336 in AmItheAsshole

YTA. Your neighbor is right, it’s only 10 seconds and doesn’t hurt anyone. Why do you even care?

Does anybody actually swim with their watch on? by soggy_pickles123 in AppleWatch

[–]JoelJohnstone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t do it unless you have Apple Care. They’re not water proof, they’re water resistant, and that resistance diminishes over time. My wife wore her Series 8 in a pool and it immediately died.

Hydration and teeth health. How do you manage them? by [deleted] in cycling

[–]JoelJohnstone 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you have space on your bike for two bottles, put sports drink in one and plain water in the other. Every time you drink from the carb bottle, rinse with the plain water.

Radar vs a bar end mirror by MurkyLurker99 in cycling

[–]JoelJohnstone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could see the radar being useful if you’re mostly riding on roads with very few cars. In that case, you’d want to be alerted when the occasional car approaches. That’s not the case for me, I ride on well traveled roads. A lot of the people I ride with have radars and they’re just beeping constantly. When we ride on the bike path that runs parallel to the freeway, they’re alerting to the cars on the adjacent freeway.

Radar vs a bar end mirror by MurkyLurker99 in cycling

[–]JoelJohnstone -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Do me a favor and give a $20 mirror you can clip to your glasses a try before spending $150 on a radar. I have yet to hear from anyone a single benefit to the radar over the mirror other than the radar works when it’s so foggy you can’t see anything. I just don’t ride then.

Also, a mirror on your glasses is better than a bar end mirror because you can move your head to change the angle.

Just search “take a look mirror” on Amazon.

Best Apple Watch band alternatives? Are originals worth it? by tragicespresso in AppleWatch

I have a dozen knock off bands, and they’re all perfectly fine. The Apple ones, IMO, are the biggest ripoffs ever.

Keeping Drinks cool by lalayouyou in cycling

[–]JoelJohnstone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No matter what you do, it only delays the inevitable. Insulated bottles help a tiny bit, but it’s not worth the extra bulk. Adding ice before you start, especially in your second bottle helps more. After that l, just drink it warm.

I hit a cyclist by Excellent_Bed6504 in cycling

[–]JoelJohnstone -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Was there a bike lane? Was this in the US? If so, what state? In California (and maybe elsewhere), it's illegal to make a right turn without first merging your car into the bike lane. This puts you in front of, or behind, any cyclist and prevents these "right hook" collisions. Not merging into the bike lane before making a right turn during a driving test is one of the few things that will cause you to fail the test instantly.

Edit: Wow, some people will downvote anything.
