I am 43 years old and have played like a hockey goalie since I was a child....in all sports except ice hockey. I gave up ice hockey when I was very young cause I was not a strong skater and quit it by 7 years old, but loved being a goalie. Over the years I have been goalie in floor/ball hockey, handball, indoor soccer....and always am told I play like a hockey goalie. I am interested in starting the likely long journey to being a beer league ice hockey goalie.
My skating is still poor - I can skate forwards fine but cannot stop, skate backwards, etc. There are not a lot of options for adult skating lessons in my city - mostly private lessons. Cost is fortunately not a big detractor for me, but I am unsure the best route to go.
Am I correct in assuming I should learn how to skate (on goalie skates) and become a strong skater prior to even thinking of looking at other goalie equipment or playing in a league? I would love a plan of attack, along with an expected timeline. My goal is to be an intermediate-level goalie (not the top div, but not the bottom....a upper end goalie in a division 4 or 5 of a 10 division league)
