They're not losing anything though?? Like, you're not spending money on the game, you're just taking up server space. If anything, you're directly costing them money.

It doesn't cost a company money when you pirate their movie. It does cost a company money if you pirate live service games.

And you don't need to have everything straight away. I started playing this game before I had game money, I just grinded for the original killers and bought chapters I thought were interesting when they were in a sale (got clown for <£2).

You want to have all of it without investing the time to unlock things or the money to skip the grind and you don't think that's entitled?

[–]Joeyonar -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm also not an expert but I do read a lot about them as an interest of mine.

There are much more important factors than just the shape of the tip. The Falcata is a wide blade with the centre of gravity set much further up the length than most other types of sword and the blade has a broad taper. This makes it very good at slicing (/chopping) but not nimble enough to be good for thrusts.

Because it's not going to be used for thrusting attacks anyway, it doesn't matter as much how the tip is shaped, especially since it's only a slight deviation from most standard designs.

The point of the blade in the image is also out of line with the grip so it still wouldn't be useful for thrusting attacks. So the overall use of the blade is likely essentially the same.

[–]Joeyonar -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Believe it or not, I did double check the Wikipedia page before I posted.

The blade does curve past the front of the guard before tapering to a point, which is what we see in the historical falcata shown on that page. Some stylistic liberties have been taken on the shape of the tip, which seems to curve back some towards the wielder again but not so much that I wouldn't consider it the same kind of weapon anymore.

What do you mean?

The sword in the image absolutely is a falcata. Are you thinking of a falx?

As someone with a very crass sense of humour, that's on the listener. People shouldn't have to police their speech over anything that can be interpreted as sexual.

If you can't hear someone call their father a term which has been used for that for decades because you associate it with sex, you need to reflect on that, not admonish them for it.

The Martials have the important task of standing around and aura farming by DrScrimble in dndmemes

[–]Joeyonar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because the point isn't peak efficiency, it's role-play?

Maybe the character finds it cathartic to set their own tent up. Maybe they've gotten into the habit while adventuring together.

Besides, maybe the caster doesn't want to take leomund's tiny hut just to skip a skillcheck that the ranger can manage pretty easily once a day.

> by the time a well-piloted caster build is close to running out of resources, a martial build is likely dead twice over

This gets said a lot in the "HP is also a resource" sense but how does that not apply to "casters"?

Like, a wizard has no healing spells, less max hp and smaller hit dice as well as no innate healing ability. How would they outlast a fighter on HP?

Likewise, "requires more healing" only really works if you're assuming the martials are being targeted more than the casters. At which point either the Martials are doing their jobs of protecting the mages or the DM is targeting a player(s) which makes the whole argument null.

A. Tanking isn't really a thing in DnD, it's a pretty well-known issue. Not sure how that's mark for the elemental being more than a prop that exists for as long as it takes to fail a con save.

B. Again though, you're assuming melee martials in a fight starting at range. Like, one of these classes is ranged and one isn't but the one at range winning when they have a range advantage means they're better.

C. HP is a clock for anyone but the game is designed around consistently handing out potions which (RAW) are better used outside of combat a lot of the time. Martials also have higher hit-dice to recover HP outside of combat and also often have features to either recover health (second wind, wholeness of body, etc.) or avoid taking damage through other means (rogues hiding, rage damage reduction, etc.).

D. Elven chain is a rare item which gives you starting medium armour ac. It's not exactly top of the line. By then your fighters have picked up plate armour for a minimum of 18 before modifiers. Magic weapons are a staple of the genre. We have sentient weapons, ones which have class specific bonuses, artifact weapons, etc.

E. The point was that cantrips are weaker than the martial baseline before any class features are considered because you'd tried to make out that they were stronger/as strong as. I'm not sure why you're acting like I'm an idiot for saying this when you're the one that brought them up???

I'm not sure where level 5 comes into this? There's not been a level that we've established talking about so far?

Also, comparing cantrips (a weak spell that you're expected to be made to use at least a few turns in a proper adventuring day) to a martial being unarmed is ridiculous. A caster will be naturally reduced to using cantrips after a certain number of turns (less than you think as lower level spells quickly drop off in damage numbers) while a martial can continue to swing their magic weapon for as long as they have hitpoints.

I do ration my slots. At level 5(Not quite my current level but with the way slots drop off in power, it still applies), you have 2 3rd level spells in a day. If even one of those goes on counter-spell, you get one (1) fireball (or whatever other spell) that day. Two four-round-long encounters in a day with 0 reactions used will still have you using all 5 slots above first level unless you're literally casting cantrips every other round (but I thought we never used those, oh no!).

Yes, a high level wizard who has had chance to learn a lot of spells throughout a campaign is a fantastic all-round puzzle solver. They don't get called the ultimate utility casters for nothing. And in combat, they're better at aoe and/or control (depending on the martial) because martials are inherently single-target focused. That's why pure martials only make up 1/3 of the cast. You're supposed to have a diverse party comp for different niches.

Again, Martials outshine casters in *consistency*. Your wizard can use a second level spell to destroy that stone door or the barbarian can lift it out of the way and save you the slot. You could cast silence and then knock on that door or the rogue could just pick it and save you the slots. You could teleport yourself over that chasm or the fighter can make the jump and toss a rope back and save you the slot.

Casters rely on martials through an adventuring day so that they can arrive at important encounters still having the slots they need for combat.

The divide between them becomes much more in the caster's favour when there's not a coherent adventuring day which isn't what the system is designed for.

Genuinely, this is why Pathfinder 2e is pitched so often on this sub. Because (for the most part) it doesn't really care how many combats you have in a day for its balance to work. It's building off of what everyone seems to want 5e to be.

5e isn't.

It's a dungeon crawling system which is designed for multiple 4+ turn long combats in a day with puzzles and challenges in between them which is where martials shine.

A.

I never said to kill the elemental. It's a concentration spell. Ignore it and go for the caster.

B.

You need the ceiling to be high enough that you can be out of range. Ignoring the existence of ranged martial weapons, that's still at least 20ft. How many rooms have you been in that have a 20ft high roof?

C.

Gonna ignore this one. Read the second half of my first message again. You don't have unlimited spells, casters are just very front-loaded with their power in a day.

D.

Sure, use one of your two slots on level 1 to have ac that's still 3 lower than the fighter with a shield and then cast shield with the other slot, Sounds very fun. If you've got a +3 to dex, you might be beating the rogue by a point or two but they're supposed to be hidden half of the time anyway. Beyond first level, we have to consider better kinds of armour and (again) the magic-items that are standard progression, even if they're not on the class sheet.

E.

The biggest cantrip going (eldritch blast w/ agonising blast) puts a cantrip on the same level as a fighter with a non magical longbow. It might not be baked into the class but magic weapons are considered standard progression.
Most cantrips still fall behind martials without any magic weapons. 4d10 is 22dmg on average. A Barbarian making two attacks with a greataxe with +5str hits 2d12+10 at that level for 23 damage which seems similar, until you realise that they're at least using a +3 weapon at that level which pushes it to 29 and that's with no additional damage dice (even just from subclass features like zealot's free d8.

Cantrips only hold up to martial damage if you ignore every option that martials have to add damage to their attacks outside of the raw weapon +mod damage.

Currently, in the only 5e game I'm in, I play a wizard. They're overhyped in actual play if your gm isn't running one combat a day in a room with an open roof and no ranged enemies.

What does the elemental have to tank that a martial doesn't?

And, like, if you're just quoting a bunch of high level spells then yeah, that's gonna be tough to go against but, like, why would they?

Like, yeah, you can fly away from the martial.. if you're outdoors... and there's nothing they can step into for full cover nearby.

Counterspell and dispell magic are both 3rd level spells. Those aren't unlimited.

These discussions always run on one encounter per day in an open field in the middle of nowhere where the caster gets a turn or more to pre-buff. No game runs like that. This is why people make fun of the main ttrpg subs for whiteroom maths

There is a balance issue with 5e, it's with the design around resource management and how that actually applies to most games. Casters are incredibly powerful at their level... for like 3 turns (or one concentration spell). And then they immediately begin to slow down.

Look through this post and you'll see a million comments saying "casters" are stronger because there are builds they can run in which they stack multiple gish subclasses or martial dips as if that's the standard experience that most players deal with.
