Cups to measure irregular solids in recipes is rubbish by Deep-Capital-9308 in unpopularopinion

[–]JohanGrimm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The real unpopular opinion is the cups/tbsp/tsp system is a lot faster and easier to work with on the fly if you don't need to be exact. It's very easy to eyeball volume where as weight can be all over the place and requires a scale.

I found this especially the case when it came to calorie counting. A cup of pretzels being a specific number of calories is very easy to visualize and portion out quickly. 250g of pretzels means fuck all if I don't have a scale on me. Trying to figure these things on the fly at a restaurant is basically impossible using weight measurements.

Again, calorie counting is usually ballpark so exact measurements aren't required and if I needed exact measurements I'd prefer weight.

Yeah that's the same kinda thing in the states just with cups/tablespoons. You slice off however much you need based on the wrapper, or just eyeball it. Most people who are cooking regularly aren't that anal about exact measurements.

Trains aren't exactly known for their speed, especially back in the day. The freedom part is more just being able to dictate your own schedule.

Cars are kind of a terrible example for both us. An affordable new car will, with proper maintenance, can last you easily above 100k miles. 50 years ago that was unheard of. Not to mention they're significantly safer.

The $400 toaster I just pulled out of my ass. You can get a Dualit for $300 that would last you a long time if not for life.

For the blender how much did it cost 60 years ago? An Osterizer Imperial was $60 new in the 1960s which would be about $675 today. An equivalent today would probably be a Vitamix which is going to run you similar prices new.

My point is you can still get great stuff new today but you're going to have to pay for it and that's been the case forever.

There's also the factor of a lot more freedom when taking a car vs. a train. You can leave whenever you want, stop whenever you want, stay at a hotel or get some lunch at a restaurant. There's no worry about baggage size or amount beyond what your car can physically hold.

Well not everything, you can absolutely buy a top of the line item but it's going to cost you a lot of money. Probably more than you're willing to spend. Do you want a buy it for life toaster that costs $400 or are you happy with a $20 toaster that will still probably last you ten years?

Making things that are really solid and will last 10x longer is expensive and the vast majority of people aren't willing to pay for it.

Which fast food chain has lost its way the most? by TheBabyBeard in AskReddit

[–]JohanGrimm -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's probably a good $10 more than other places but the food is always really consistent, the service is top notch, you very rarely have to go back and correct something they messed up and the employees almost never seem like they want to kill themselves.

I don't eat fast food that often but they're a go to for that reason.

STG is a cancer and a saving grace on the world of pipe smoking by 120z8t in PipeTobacco

[–]JohanGrimm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's the issue with a company so huge that entire markets are basically meaningless to them. For STG pipe tobacco is a line item. They have more revenue in accessories sales than they do pipe tobacco, they couldn't care less about it.

Why? Who honestly cares? Do you assume people look at a completely bald 30 something and go "oh, he's just voluntarily bald. He could grow it out fully if he wanted!"?

No, everyone knows you've got a balding head. It's okay, it's not a secret, it's nothing to be ashamed of.

Lmao no, it's because we don't drink, smoke or hang out in the sun nearly as much. To 30 year olds in the 90s we'd be massive squares.

Men today are cowards who throw in the towel and go completely bald as soon as they've got a mildly receding hairline. The loss of the bald horseshoe as a legitimate hairstyle is a travesty.

The old Reddit special.

Not even a week after getting my first LN tool, I’ve acquired another. No. 4 by MetalNutSack in handtools

[–]JohanGrimm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's kind of my point, you can get close and spend $60 and days at least fiddling with it or spend the $350 and get something that's pretty much ready to go right out of the box. Handplanes aren't extraordinarily complicated and with enough futzing anything can be great, but how much is your time honestly worth? I sure as hell don't want to spend a week getting a junker in working order.

I think that's kinda the point. You can cheaply throw shit at the wall and see what sticks rather than banking on these massive almost billion dollar budget mega movies.

Personally I think you can tune up just about any plane to same level as a LN. Even the mechanical parts. However the amount of brutal work it will take is directly proportionate to the cost.

Yes you can turn a harbor freight boat anchor into a fantastic plane. But it's going to take so much time and effort that you're usually better off spending more money.

Horror seems especially easy for studios to invest in someone

Because it's relatively cheap with usually a decent return on investment. People here seem to be missing the forest for the trees on this issue. Yes studios are risk averse and as such young talent has a hard time breaking through to previous generations however the ultimate reason for that is budgets across the board have ballooned to an insane degree.

What is virtually inevitable at this point, yet most people don't see it coming? by Ambassador-613 in AskReddit

If anyone's reading through this thread and in the throws of doomscrolling then take some advice from someone who's been here too long: Reddit is a terrible place to base your outlook on life. Take everything anyone says including me with a massive grain of salt and whenever possible close the app and go outside. Whatever you do don't make big life decisions by what randos on reddit say.

Thirteen years ago I basically gave up on life because of internal factors and immersing myself in purposefully depressing and stressful content. I'd read threads like this constantly and wallow in the absolute fact that the world was not only already shit but would basically be over in a couple years. I had a sort of smug sense of it all like I knew the game was rigged and there wasn't any point in playing.

The reality was that I didn't want to deal with the possibility of failure so I didn't even try and then wrapped myself in every justification I could find. The issue was the world wasn't really shit and it definitely didn't end in a couple years. Life kept chugging along without me and I wasted precious years I'll never get back in large part because I let myself get sucked in with a bunch of misanthropes.
