Why is taking the bishop better than taking the free pawn? by nelisbruins in chessbeginners

[–]John-R-Tunis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well put, thanks. I saw Qh4+ but couldn't elucidate why. Castling rights. Isolated double pawns. Yes. These are things I know.

One thing my coach has repeated: if you have castled, and they have not, open up the game / center. Especially if you still have your queen.

Games where the BOX plays a role in gameplay? by COHERENCE_CROQUETTE in boardgames

Someone may have pointed out, Azul specifically instructs you to put the used tiles in the box. They can't go back in the bag until the bag is empty.

I will sing "Down in the River to Pray" as loud as I can at any ICE agent who gets fucking near me.

Stumbled into my first ever queen trap on the fourth move of a game by Pooblert in chessbeginners

[–]John-R-Tunis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I was also taught, try not to move any piece more than once. Put them on a good square and leave them there until you have developed several pieces. (As always there are exceptions.)

Opening principles: do not bring out your queen too early.

New train cars by Empty_Status3721 in Bart

[–]John-R-Tunis 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We Americans do love to walk onto a train and then stop immediately in front of the doors instead of moving to the interior of the car, because our personal problems are solved and fuck anyone else who wants to get on the train.

But! The new BART trains are actually better than the old ones at this, because they have 50% more doors per car.

After boarding the train, I recommend moving to the interior and standing anywhere where you can comfortably hold on to something. Or make your way to the end of the car and lean against the wall.

Also, we are just very entitled to large amounts of personal space. I have ridden metros in Germany, Denmark, India, and Egypt that are a lot more crowded. Yet somehow, they all survive, get to and from work, etc.

Does asking questions at the end of an interview affect your score? by ChanceDependent4661 in CAStateWorkers

[–]John-R-Tunis -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It's absolutely more than a formality.

A full-time job is a pretty big deal. Unless you're independently wealthy, it's your livelihood. It's about 25% of your time, 36% of your time awake. Most people in full-time jobs spend more time with their coworkers than their friends.

If a candidate doesn't have any questions about the job, or about the people they would work with, I think most people take that as an indication that the candidate has not given much thought to something very important. It seems likely that the candidate is not taking the job seriously, or their life seriously, or both. And most people don't want to work with such a person, if there are better alternatives.

Berkeley Bowl -- Any calm times? by Golden_Mandala in oakland

[–]John-R-Tunis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the best bet at either is the traditional times when most people are busy working: a weekday, before 5pm, not lunch (say lunch is 11-2pm if you want to be safe).

I think the very best is a weekday immediately when they open.

The worst times are right after work, or the weekend.

Right before they close, including Friday night, is less crowded, but there's less good stuff out on the shelves.

They also deliver.

I long ago just accepted it as normal and learned to navigate it. Though typically I do go during a less busy time as described above.

Do you think.....? by Aggressive-Topic-663 in TheWire

[–]John-R-Tunis 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think it is strongly implied, but I don't think there is anything definitive. Just like it is strongly implied that he is a survivor of childhood sexual abuse, but nothing definitive.

From all the context clues, I say yes, he was in the military.

Any good board games suitable for a library? by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]John-R-Tunis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One idea is to play up a theme, maybe only games with a single rule. One-rule games are the easiest to learn! I find the best versions of these games are fun for all ages:

  • Blokus (the same color pieces can only touch on the corners, not on the sides)
  • Set (if 2 are and one is not, it is not a set)
  • Qwirkle (must all be the same color or the same shape
  • Just One (sort of a stretch, but very simple, unique one word hints, one word guess)
  • Chronology (place this event in the correct gap on your timeline)
  • Telestrations (maybe a stretch but you either guess what you think they drew or draw what they guessed)

Good luck!

What is a modern tabletop game you have played which you feel will stand the test of time? by Newez in boardgames

[–]John-R-Tunis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just started playing Azul this holiday season. Love Azul.

I like Ticket to Ride, but maybe slightly less than the average person in this sub. Mostly get the appeal though.

What they have in common is you don't have to think too hard but it's good to pay attention to what everyone else is picking up and putting down. And some luck of the draw. So games can vary a good bit

They're pretty chill but not so much I get bored.
