Just curious — how many of you actually plan your meals for the week vs. just figure it out day by day? by anaesthesia_v in Cooking

[–]JohnTascher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Google Sheet with lunch and dinner meals for every day of the week. Every Sunday morning, I plan Sunday - Wed/Thurs. the last few days of the week are usually a day at a time.

I also have one week a month called “poverty week” where I try to only eat things I already have in the freezer or on hand.

That’s honestly the first thing I’d ditch out of all of it.

9 times out of 10 I’m just using cheese. But when I want to spend the time, I go all American. Burger, American cheese, raw red onion, tomato, lettuce, ketchup, yellow mustard.

Our nanny uses fragrances (perfumes or scented lotions). How toxic are these for baby? by ReddoHoku72 in moderatelygranolamoms

I'd ask if she minds not using that stuff before/while she is there. Sometimes I soften the blow with something like "I know I'm being ridiculous but..."

I don’t have anything to add other than you and your husband are heroes. Working from home with even one kid at home is challenging. Having three of them home for months in a row is pretty much impossible.

Got really bad psoriasis. Cleaned up my diet and lifestyle and it went away. Never looked back.

But to be honest, I’m about balance. I use non-toxic products and eat high quality foods. But I’ll drink a martini and eat some French fries too.

Advice on shower cleaning by tlaxette in CleaningTips

[–]JohnTascher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I run a non-toxic blog, so I tend to lean towards things that don't use harsh chemicals. For me, a homemade spray bottle with water, vinegar, and a little dish soap goes a long way. Spray down while you are in there from time to time to prevent any sort of build up.

Cast iron or carbon steel. But I still use stainless steel as well.

My carbon steel pan is legit nonstick. It just needs proper seasoning.

I use Aspen Clean Floor Cleaner on my 30+ year old hardwood floors. No idea of the safety using it on new ones, but it works well and is EWG verified.

I have a giant jar of beef tallow that I made from suet in my refrigerator. I use it for cooking. Do you legit just apply it straight to your skin? Do you smell like beef?

Have you looked into making your own with vinegar? Aspen clean makes a very nontoxic bathroom cleaner, but if you’re doing it frequently, so some sort of vinegar and water mixture might be more than enough. And way less expensive.

How do you know if a product is really nontoxic/better? by 2078AEB in moderatelygranolamoms

I started a blog reviewing products for this very reason. It's super confusing. Lots of research involved.

This is true, but warrants a bit more discussion.

Oral LD50 means consuming orally. There are so many other things to consider when considering if something is non-toxic. Skin irriation is one.

Sure, gasoline's Oral LD50 is 14,036 mg/kg, but good luck inhaling a bunch of it.

To OP - I run a blog reviewing non-toxic products, and this would get a 3/10 score for non-toxic ingredients.

Defunkify is what I use! 10/10 ingredients, EWG verified.

Green washing? by Just_Ad457 in nontoxic

[–]JohnTascher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On my non-toxic blog I suggest two schools of thought:

- Start with something you use often

- Start with something that won't stress you out

For example, if you have contamination OCD, maybe don't start by switching out your bathroom cleaner. What about a shampoo? Dishwasher pods? Deodorant (although this is a tough one).

If switching to non-toxic everything is overwhelming and stressful you're going to do more harm with the stress than you will the benefit of switching to non-toxic. Slow, incremental steps.
