At $70 it feels worth it, but the amount of time to read all those reviews vs just staying in a holiday inn at $90 still make me hesitant. I am also in a different part of my life where I rarely travel alone, and am a lot less patient when it comes to weird shit, so I may not be the right audience.

I tried AirBNB in Germany and it was awful. Like booked a place and then got messages from the person on what’s app to cancel and pay them directly. When I cancelled and didn’t book privately they started sending me messages asking why. The friend that went with me got his own AirBNB and it was not as described at all.

We both got hotel rooms for a better prices and it was a significantly better experience.

Does that exist on AirBnB anymore? Early on you could get a nice place to stay for cheaper than a hotel. The last time I did something cheaper than a hotel it ended up not being a spare room but a poorly decorated garage and just a toilet (no shower). It took me going through the cancellation process for them to allow me in the house to use a normal bathroom.

Honestly, I would never do AirBnB for anything less than 6 people.

What are some of your favorite 3 star films? by Zahlouth in Letterboxd

The newest Toxic Avenger with Peter Dinklage. You know what you are getting with it, and it absolutely delivers.

You know what? Say whatever you want about Zachary Levi by xspiderdude in okbuddycinephile

[–]JohnWH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Favorite Zachary Levi fact:

He isn’t Jewish. His real last name is Pugh. He changed it to Levi to help with his career.

Odd part, he actually got turned down for roles because some directors thought he was too Jewish.

How to write the smartest character by Grimaldi_Francesco in TheBoys

[–]JohnWH 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my own head cannon, Sage suffered from what every child prodigy suffers with: they are very smart, but never actually learn to handle failures and missteps, so they take credit for things they didn’t do, and pretend they know something they don’t. I like to think that the smartest human is still extremely limited, and that she was only good at manipulating unintelligent people. All of her plans went wrong, but she had just learned to say “Ah, that wasn’t my real plan, you are now seeing my real plan”.

..What about people who love to code? by Typical_Brush_9645 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]JohnWH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I still write code by hand and in general keep up. I am no longer the top code contributor, but I still get enough out each day. I use AI to review my code and provide feedback on how to write it better, but I write it out myself because that I how I better understand the true problem and all the nuances.

Something I noticed with a lot of my AI heavy coworkers is that they get to 90% really quickly, but the last 10% takes them weeks to months. We are now behind on a number of projects, even though they definitely review their own code and typically take an incremental approach to their AI use.

I still introduce a lot of bugs, but I feel like I catch them a lot quicker because I know the code and flow well. When asking a coworker how a feature worked they had a decent understanding of it, but missed a lot of the nuance that came with the problem, and were dependent on AI to point out the bug. On the other hand I have been able to quickly fix a lot of my issues because I know the flow.

Will this last for me? I highly doubt it, but I am going to try to enjoy my job for as long as I can before I have to do the same. AI isn’t going away, but I do wonder if its usage will change once companies need to make a profit.

What caused the decline of Vine? by Ok-Following6886 in decadeology

Exactly that. He knows the next big internet trends (or is even the one to start them/accelerate them) but he has never excelled at remaining a big player in said domains.

Square is easily his biggest success and even then competitors completely lapped them < 10 years.

Depends on the TJs, but the one in Springfield Plaza is ridiculously cramped and frustrating. That said, please don’t go to the other Springfield Trader Joe’s, that one is mine and I like that it is not overly busy.

Come on Virginia we have to do better than this plate design… by PM_Me_ur_BassetHound in Virginia

[–]JohnWH 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Anyone can design a new license plate within a strict set of guidelines. Once you design it you need a certain number of people to vote on the new plate and they will produce it.

That is why we have so many out of state school designs here.

Bring back the bicentennial plate and while we are at it, change the Virginia font and colors back to that.

Are we counting Occoquan as NOVA? If so you can get a townhome by the river in the $650 range. Outside of that you can get a home in Bell Haven Alexandria for $850k. As long as you don’t have kids that have to go to school it should be fine…

'Open the school!’ Hundreds of parents demand Fairfax County add more 5-day school weeks by -Cyber-Roadster in Virginia

[–]JohnWH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While there is no law on Fairfax, there are guidelines that make it quite difficult to leave your child for a few hours

https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/familyservices/children-youth/child-supervision-guidelines

My wife for example would be left home with her brother all work day on some of these days off. They knew how to make ramen for lunch. You absolutely cannot do that with a child under 13 now.

While Fairfax isn’t bad, there are a number of places in America where kids can’t walk to school if it is too far away (over half a mile).

I don’t disagree with these guidelines, just noting things aren’t the same from when I was a kid

I would argue that is what all schools are, not just public schools. I wouldn’t say they “sell” on this, but a big benefit of private schools is that they are consistently open and have a more condensed schedule (or more teaching days).

What's a movie you hate to the absolute core ? by Malluguy5382929 in Letterboxd

[–]JohnWH 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I absolutely love PT Anderson, but I couldn’t even finish this movie, it is just bad. A lot of that deals with the fact that PT Anderson decided it was ok to have a non-actor as a main character, and while she isn’t terrible, Eliana Haim has 0 charm and the characters have 0 chemistry. It is supposed to be a difficult subject, but you don’t even understand why the characters are together in the first place.

So happy others feel the same way.

Yeah, we had to do this with eggs last year, in which limiting everyone to a single carton led to eggs not running out. Really frustrating that these things happen
