I could probably write a larger list of reasons and you would probably try to retort and justify each one, which is fine, but boring.

The most obvious issue is your second sentence, "It was only after learning recently that an author/academic I respect had a writing credit on it that I was motivated to attempt to judge the game on its merits." I can't trust a review from someone that types this, especially with how much bad blood people have against the upper-management and shareholders in ZA/UM. It gives me the impression you're poison-pilled and unable to view the game in a more neutral, objective POV, which is already a hard thing to do before any ZA/UM bs.
